Yeah, I am happy for you queen fans and am gonna let you roll out, just want to ask:
Where is the up-to-date list? The list up-top used to be it, but it's way out of.
Just wondering which ones I can look forward to.

its kinda amusing that extreme metal will be going up at the same time as hair metal. Will there be any overlap in voters?
and is it extreme metal songs or albums?
― Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 26 September 2015 23:56 (eight years ago) link
They arent happening at the same time afaict

It will be albums, perhaps you might want to help me come up with a good description of what is extreme and what is not, CS?

They happen so randomly now it's hard to predict, but yeah...AT LEAST two years.

I know, I know, #getalife, but I'm kind of sad an "ILM - 2010-2014 Tracks/Albums" rollout isn't happening this year.

Gotta see what my new job situation is like (I don't even know yet if I'll have internet access). We may get to that poll after all, though.

What's up with the metal poll? Can we go to the next one?
― kornrulez6969, Monday, 19 October 2015 12:59 (eight years ago) link
I feel like the queue was necessary and helpful when the poll craze first started taking off but now that things have mellowed out we could probably do a free-for-all, or pick a month and make that a free-for-all just to see if things get to crowded or if things would work out fine that way.
― some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 13:21 (eight years ago) link
in a free for all would people still have dibs on particular artists/genres? like, if someone was on the queue to do a Level 42 ballot poll but weren't able/inclined to run the poll any time soon would it be cool for someone else to start their own Level 42 ballot poll for example?
― soref, Monday, 19 October 2015 15:27 (eight years ago) link
if the metal poll(s) is/are failing than Stephen Merritt is next obviously
― Οὖτις, Monday, 19 October 2015 16:46 (eight years ago) link
by 'free-for-all' i meant that that people who called dibs on running a particular poll would still get to do that when they want to (or voluntarily hand it off to someone else)
― some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 16:51 (eight years ago) link
like, if that idea would result in a landgrab where people are like "hey this poll you were all prepared to do in 6 months, you should do it NOW NOW NOW or i will do it" then maybe forget i said anything
― some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:00 (eight years ago) link
i'm actually kinda open to this new idea though it should be probably be aired for a while in the interest of fairness. setting aside the issue of a long queue - which i think is just kinda, "that's the way it goes" even in the best case of no delays between polls (cause the polls themselves need to be a certain length of time to be fun) - - - the quarter-on-the-table system only works right if everybody really is queued up and ready, and has reasonable certainty of when their time comes up.
it might be that some version of open volunteering might work better, by placing the emphasis on who's ready to do their poll at a given time. like basically i think most of the delays come in just because at that particular moment, the person's busy at work, or moving, or traveling or whatever, so at best they could do the poll, but not well... but at the exact same moment it would have been the perfect time for somebody way down the list. of course, it would suck if it just became a form of queue-jumping for the people nearest the bottom, over people in the middle who feel like they've been following the rules and waiting their turn.
― Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 October 2015 17:10 (eight years ago) link
Is the hair metal poll not due up next? Surely that is something that might inspire frobisher to do the extreme metal poll. Maybe he fears that none of you will vote in it and has cold feet incase it gets noone voting?
Usually people use these polls to learn about artists they arent familiar with so bone up on them and vote. Nobody doing that with extreme metal?
― Cosmic Slop, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:19 (eight years ago) link

I think this is otm and the way to work it going forward. Now that the doldrums have set in, the key to these things is enough enthusiasm and energy on the part of the pollrunner to goose the voters a bit.
― Exit, pursued by Yogi Berra (WilliamC), Monday, 19 October 2015 17:23 (eight years ago) link
like, my biggest ILX fear is that my poll turn comes up at the wrong time in my life and becomes work rather than fun.
― Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 19 October 2015 18:01 (eight years ago) link
yeah...i did the classic rock poll at the exact time that i could plunge a bunch of time and effort into it but the entire year before or after that month would've been a total hassle
― some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 18:06 (eight years ago) link
when i do the Hendrix poll or any other future polls it'll feel like a breeze compared to what an undertaking the classic rock one was, though
― some dude, Monday, 19 October 2015 18:07 (eight years ago) link
the classic rock poll was a high point of ILX though, thanks again
