i dunno what 'wet' means in this context but i agree, they're wet as shit

Enjoying his current grooves, as is Em. Liked the TFI appearance, having hated the video for WDYM. This is fine too.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 11:24 (eight years ago) link

we've only heard 3 songs and 2/3 are far better than "boyfriend" at least so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

dyl, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 14:12 (eight years ago) link

"wet" like dipped in formaldehyde and dopey?

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 14:46 (eight years ago) link

wet is that confusing an adjective? drippy and bland

"boyfriend" is probably his second best ever song

lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link

"what do u mean" is obviously his best single by a mile

i mean i love "baby" as much as the next terius stan but i'm excited about the nu-biebera

This, and I like "Boyfriend."

where are you now is my least fav

and 'as long as you love me' is as good as any of the new songs

sounds like Blood is on more than one track? wiki credits for the album have quite a diverse writer-ship... production isn't up there fully yet. interesting to see whether there is cohesiveness or not

Yet another one from him and Skrillex.

the poor lil rich boy thing seems carefully calibrated to piss off non-fans, especially when the video is him just sorta chilling in immensely beautiful country by himself and complaining

These lyrics are so good, i feel sorry for him, I can't imagine how hard his life actually is

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 November 2015 16:58 (eight years ago) link

three boring singles out of three so far, and this one is annoying as well

why is he suddenly cool among critics and on social media though, when i repped for "boyfriend" and "as long as you love me" there was none of this

lex pretend, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:29 (eight years ago) link

"Boyfriend" is cool, and so are "Sorry" and "What Do You Mean." No controversy.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:43 (eight years ago) link

i don't mean anyone specific, just what the general consensus seems to be

lex pretend, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 15:46 (eight years ago) link

why is he suddenly cool among critics and on social media though

because he's entered his "adult" phase

lex is right that it's weird that suddenly everybody's all "I'm into this new Bieber jam" when two years ago they wouldn't have crossed the street to shit on him, like when he was doing Music Mondays

hint: he turned 21

this is just like when Britney or Justin or [insert teen pop sensation] got old enough for adult interest in them to not smack of pedophilia

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 16:55 (eight years ago) link

Britney had some interesting material before she turned 21 though, despite sounding like a constipated duck

more interesting, less pandering production (thanks Skrillex)?

backlash to the backlash to the backlash dept: Journals had several really good tracks that eluded critical interest somehow. I will still rep for what's hatnin', confident, all that matters, bad day, roller coaster (though dan should avoid these as they will hurt his head)
though they more or less sound entirely the same, i find myself very much drawn to sorry and where are u now and repelled by what do you mean and i'll show you. shrug emoticon.

a llove spat over a llama-keeper (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 16:57 (eight years ago) link

I'm just speaking to a general trend in career arcs of teen pop stars that's pretty consistent and fairly obvious imo. if they're interested in any kind of career longevity in the industry they make the leap to "respectable" hitmakers (usually via some bids for being controversial or otherwise adult; "I'm all grown up now!") and attempt to age with their generation

Shaun Cassidy still pissed that he put all that work into Wasp and hired Todd Rundgren and covered Bowie and people wouldn't shit on him even if he crossed over to their side of the street

i am familiar with the "all grown up" now arc of a teenpop star's career thankyou, i am just wondering why this seems so divorced from his music for so many people. his music was getting interesting & good three years ago!

more interesting, less pandering production (thanks Skrillex)?

don't really hear anything more interesting or less pandering in the new songs' production than say "as long as you love me" which is a pretty high peak in his discography, or several other tracks on believe

i never did check out journals, weirdly when i interviewed k michelle she went on about how great it was for AGES

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:28 (eight years ago) link

it's a good r&b record

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:28 (eight years ago) link

unlike lex i do think "where are u now", "what do you mean" and "sorry" are some of his best work so i can see why people are really into them

but i do think this is a case where a pop star being more consciously grown up in sound (i.e. the verses on "where are u now") makes it ok for some people to approach his music, where there was still something goofy and immature about "boyfriend" or "beauty and a beat"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:30 (eight years ago) link

also i wouldn't discount the fact that he became a tabloid fixture in between the two records. more interest in his celebrity is going to generate interest in his music even amongst ostensible critics (this same principle applies to rihanna becoming a huge concern among tastemakers on the internet despite releasing like 3 songs in the last two years)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:34 (eight years ago) link

iirc people were hyped abt boyfriend at the time but believe was kind of a disappointment and

i don't think it has anything to do with his age. teen pop stars who successfully become adult pop stars are outliers we just all collectively forget about the ones who don't, like it's not a general trend for people to positively critically reevaluate like willa ford or whoever when they reach 21

also *lifts cloth off lex ears* new biebs... sounds different? i liked some of old-biebs singles but new shit is miles ahead of all but the best of his past output \o/

*and killed the momentum

flopson, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:57 (eight years ago) link

teen pop stars who successfully become adult pop stars are outliers we just all collectively forget about the ones who don't, like it's not a general trend for people to positively critically reevaluate like willa ford or whoever when they reach 21

most teen pop stars look at the odds and cash out without even bothering trying to become an adult pop star - cuz the road is brutal and the rewards are not clear. If you've already made millions by the time yr 21, why not take yr ball and go home and do something else (as most do?) The outliers are either those who really deeply crave artistic credibility or are psychotically narcissistic enough that they crave pop-star levels of fame/attention and can't envision existing without it.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 17:59 (eight years ago) link

... or are attempting to pursue careers in their chosen profession by following the avenue where they've so far had the most success?

I mean, I hate Bieber to death but this is like saying that Bill Gates is a raging narcissist for continuing to pursue a career in software after selling DOS to IBM.

had to go listen to 'as long as you love me' but that pop-dubstep thing (with the Skrillex-esque drums, ironically) definitely reads as less 'mature' than the new tracks.

i don't think it's true at all that most teen pop stars elect to not pursue fame, some of them just wash out
