hoverboards fit missy's aesthetic so perfectly

speaking as a huge missy fan this song is not too good, she def sounds like shes been on the shelf for the better part of a decade and pharrells rapping is typically awful

to be fair this did happen with those terrible missy singles a couple of years ago, but i am fairly sure this is legitimately good! we'll wait and see about greatness

lex pretend, Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:14 (eight years ago) link

this is way better than the previously leaked singles

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:22 (eight years ago) link

also pharrell nice of u to send a puppet buddy

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:27 (eight years ago) link

i am also not bowled over

dyl, Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

This seems like a self-conscious return to form (both song and video), like something that would have fit on "This is Not a Test." Not the best, but definitely welcome, and totally makes my day regardless.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

missy sounds pretty good on this but the beat isn't really doing anything for me, it gives me bad "pon de floor" vibes like 5 years after the fact

im trying to figure out where it fits.... this is a little too close to the aborted gwen stefani comeback i think

J0rdan S., Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:43 (eight years ago) link

I am so fine with this.

thread of getting sw0le and lena jokes (Eric H.), Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:46 (eight years ago) link

one way in which it is not like the aborted Gwen Stefani comeback is that Missy doesn't sound like a constipated chimp on this

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:59 (eight years ago) link

i'm amazed missy's flow is as good as it is considering how galumphing her voice has been on...everything she's released in the past decade

lex pretend, Thursday, 12 November 2015 18:02 (eight years ago) link

how come "stickin out your tongue" like so slightly off beat? ahh it's driving me mad!

I hear that falling squarely on 3; what do you mean by "slightly off beat"?

I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Thursday, 12 November 2015 18:09 (eight years ago) link

I get the exact same feeling, maybe she's just a tiny bit slow or the way she phrases the syllables makes it sound like another rhythm, not syncopated but another tempo

niels, Thursday, 12 November 2015 18:23 (eight years ago) link

woah, this is good! sometimes feels a little bit empty, mix-wise - like the vocals are too loud for it just being them and the beat - but i think it works. ok sure, it's a self-conscious return to form, delivering as many rhythmic and vocal surprises as you're hoping to find in a missy record... but those are still good things, and just as enjoyable to the ears as they were a decade ago. it's a first hearing of course, but i'm inclined to say it's her best single since the under construction run?

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 12 November 2015 18:40 (eight years ago) link

ok that might be a bit much. i think i like "lose control," "pass that dutch" and "i'm really hot" more when i'm hearing them than when i'm thinking about them.

Frump 'n' Dump (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 12 November 2015 18:42 (eight years ago) link

It's solid and she's just so great to listen to as a performer. Ideas hitting you from every direction. Her voice seems deeper than it used to be? Suits her

Leonard Pine, Thursday, 12 November 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

i'm 100% on board. no one makes hip-hop 'fun' like Missy.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 12 November 2015 22:14 (eight years ago) link

Missy + Dave Meyers has to be one of the greatest music video director/artist teams of all time.

Missy without Timbaland is like some real Elton John "I'm gonna write my own lyrics now" shit

finally, a timbaland bernie taupin equivalency.

this is great except for the pharrell verse.

ahhh yes more than anything I am happy that people are paying attention! Feel like this could have been even bigger if it had happened a little closer to the Superbowl bit she did.

Also I love this obvs even the Pharrell part

There are a bunch of good tracks on The Cookbook, and they're not the Timbo ones

w/e The Cookbook is hands down her worst album and everyone knows this

sure, but even so it's still pretty good overall

btw fake Timbaland might be preferable to real Timbaland these days.

that is fair

"worst album" is meaningless when four out of your discography's six are straight-up classics and none of them are outright bad, though the cookbook is better than this is not a test by a long way and in general pretty underrated ("bad man"!!!!!)

lex pretend, Friday, 13 November 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link

The Cookbook is her worst *listen to "Meltdown" for seventh time*

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 November 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link

TISNAT! is my favorite after the debut. I love the spareness: each song with a single ear-catching beat, some of Missy's best smut and party fodder.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 November 2015 19:18 (eight years ago) link

Yeah they're all classics. How is this even in dispute?

thread of getting sw0le and lena jokes (Eric H.), Friday, 13 November 2015 19:19 (eight years ago) link

"let me fix my weave" and "spelling bee" alone justify TINAT

lex pretend, Friday, 13 November 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

she really did a great job NOT releasing a terrible album in the decade when she fell off

lex pretend, Friday, 13 November 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

man, you guys remember that Cookbook shit way more fondly than me. i was so bent out of shape at it

bricc baby hitlo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 13 November 2015 19:23 (eight years ago) link

also timbaland is a major hack right now anyway who really wants to hear him produce more music

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 November 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link

the two of them did the celebrated comeback thing three years ago and nobody cared about those songs, the entire premise of this conversation is flawed
