Can someone link to some of these mixes? I only know the album and the uh remix EPs.

what's so controversial about him

That's quite a (long) tracklist.

k, so i'm currently listening to Los Angeles, which i hadn't heard before, and it's pretty good. GNG BNG is amazing. what i'd heard before that i didn't like was 1983

Apparently that some people don't think he's amazing is controversial.

you should listen to Samiyam's reset ep moonship

1983 has some good tracks, I really dug unexpected delight. I was looking real forward to the long lost album w/ daedelus and his wife but I really don't like a lot of daedelus' new shit

controversial = long discussion on "wonky" thread about how great / not great he is. also he got essential mix of the year, but if you read the comments box on BBC it was very contentious.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i basically started the thread because i thought the conversation on the "wonky" thread could be extended without really derailing that thread too badly.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 21:34 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah vahid that's it

i always thought it was odd that he used the whole un-edited version but scratched the word "faggot"

los angeles was one of my favorite albums from last year and i think that essential mix is ace, too. i had no idea it got voted as the best.

i like this guy's music because it is unsettled/free and joyous (not in some kind of religious way; it sounds like he's having a great time), but it also sounds totally laser-focused.

Los Angeles was the best record of 2008 in my opinion.

But I'm sort of a Flying Lotus junkie. I listen to his complete output pretty thoroughly and frequently... but I'm from LA and he's the first local act I'd gotten way excited about in a really long time. Anyway, I have 4 different mixes of his and they are titled as follows:
The Black Fist
Live on Future Roots Radio 1/30/09
Essential Mix on Radio 1
BBC Radio 1 Sept '07

and they are all great.

Don't believe the 1983 disappointment in this thread, that's a really solid album. Grab the following in addition to the above mixes:
1983
Reset EP
Los Angeles
Los Angeles 1x3 EP

Finally, and this can both help or hinder my efforts of persuasion here, but I recently had a nice little streak of using acid once a month for the last 3 months. Every time I just put on a ton of Flying Lotus and it really, really delivered.

BusDriverStu (Bus Driver Stu), Friday, 10 April 2009 09:13 (fifteen years ago) link

1983 kind of sounds like bad downtempo Mr. Oizo. His style wasn't refined enough by that point.

LA x 3 EP > Los Angeles. Floating on massive bass-driven clouds over gray and turbulent shipping lanes. "Endless White" sounds like Marsen Jules circa "Lazy Sunday Funerals", except better.

This part of the sentence is even dumber. (lukas), Sunday, 8 November 2009 12:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i'd been avoiding this dude for some reason, and i haven't heard a whole record (just some random youtube shit and a couple of cuts from the upcoming album), but i'm sold now. seems like he's good at both the post-dilla drum programming thing and the nu-synth thing. his remix of 'reckoner' is great too.

He mimes his live shows. It's pretty ridiculous. All premixed and he just works the filters and delays, then poses like jesus. I thought the Chemical Bros. and Oakenfold were the bottom of the miming and posing possee but FlyLo is right up there with the worst of them. Either make your entire set live on stage or don't pose when you twist the delay nob.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 18:57 (fourteen years ago) link

it's kinda weird to expect these producers to do something that's related to what they do but not at all the same. reminds me of that mitch hedberg thing on comedians & acting, like "if i had worked my ass off to become a really good cook, and you said, 'alright, you're a cook...can you farm?'"

i guess the obvious answer is "don't play live", but it must be tough when you're not making shit off your records and getting offered well-paying gigs.

The real record has leaked already (there was a milquetoast chillout album passed out as the real deal a few days ago). Sounds more busy and saturated than the last one so far, more jazz influence as well. Its hard to take in a single dose tho.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 05:37 (fourteen years ago) link

very excited about the new one. RobertaFlack is already one of my favorite tracks all time

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm seeing him live next week, should be interesting

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I think he's incredible live. Best thing I've seen at the SXSW fest in Austin in perhaps 8 years of going (whether that says more about his live show or my being easily impressed, I'm not sure).

Anyway... I'm no superfan (yet anyway), but highest recommendations to the live show.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

The live set is good because it's prerecorded except for the delay/filters. He's a poser and a fake on stage. If you want to see a guy posing behind his laptop and twisting a couple knobs with greatly exaggerated movements, go for it.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Cool, can we also please talk about how Ashley Simpson is OMG SOOOO FAKE because she lip-synced on SNL?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Sure, it's a valid comparison.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm cool with that sort of thing if he has something visual going on and the live venue has a good sound system.

mh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link

damn, those knobs be hot.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:49 (fourteen years ago) link

if you've ever assigned knobs to functions in Abelton Live, you know exactly what's going on in that clip. If you haven't, you think he's actually doing something.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago) link

serious question, what is a dude like this supposed to do live? make beats from scratch on the fly?

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago) link

So "assign[ing] knobs to functions in Abelton Live" =/= "actually doing something"?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, I was disappointed to find out he's such an asshole because I enjoyed his last few albums and I was the type of person who looked down on IDM nerds in the 90s because they were too uptight to dance. So congrats, I guess?

Moodles, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:11 (six years ago) link

having trouble parsing what you wrote there, tombot

curious though why you think he's always been an asshole?

the late great, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:20 (six years ago) link

He's saying he knew Flying Lotus sucked both as a person and musician all along, but would feel more vindicated if his fans were higher up on the coolness totem pole.

Moodles, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:23 (six years ago) link

i got the first part

second part seems like a parody of the worst impulses of early ILM ... judging music primarily by judging its fans, bad sociology masquerading as music criticism

still curious why you thought he was an asshole all along?

the late great, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:26 (six years ago) link

on the topic of judging music primarily by judging its fans, i have it on good authority that he's crossed over with the festival trap crowd (TNGHT fans) so not expecting to see many IDM geeks there, instead expecting lots of bros in tshirts and fluorescent sunglasses

the late great, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:33 (six years ago) link

I'm disappointed by how much he's been coming off like an edgy Reddit bro lately, but I still like his records.

the late great, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 17:32 (six years ago) link

Oh right.

When people I trust recommend things to me, including critics I follow writing positive reviews, and those things disappoint me, I end up disliking those things in a way that is different in both category and degree from the way I dislike, say, mediocre club music, or any other by-the-numbers shit you care to name. Hate is too strong a word. But it certainly factors in the disappointment with the person(s) who recommended the thing, and then bundles that with the thing itself, plus the money I no longer have because I spent it on the thing that was recommended. Anyway, that's probably normal and not at all interesting so thanks for reading!

I've paid no attention to him but liked his albums well enough. He opened for solange the other night with 3d projections and those, in conjunction with the contact high I got from everyone around me smoking, gave me a fairly credible LSD flashback experience so that was neat.

akm, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 21:49 (six years ago) link

the late great, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 22:39 (six years ago) link

the late great, Tuesday, 24 October 2017 22:39 (six years ago) link

I'm honestly not familiar enough with all of his stuff to say. He did about 35-40 minutes (it was an opening slot after all) and the 3d animations were really impressive, great graphics.

sleepingbag, Sunday, 5 November 2017 03:45 (six years ago) link

he projected the video behind himself when he "played" it. the projections were really crisp and the 3d was very impressive

i was disappointed though that overall the 3d animations didn't really have any theme or narrative. as my friend put it, it was a bit ... windows screensaver-y

definitely felt like they were just throwing up whatever 3d animations they had come up with. some of it had an outer space theme, some of it was body horror, some of it was like random 90s cyberdelic stuff, some of it related to his old albums. just a grab bag of random shit.

but yeah, taken piece by piece it was impressive

the opening act was some dude named pbdy who was ... not good

the late great, Sunday, 5 November 2017 03:52 (six years ago) link

i can't find what he played online anywhere but it was laptop music that sounded like a cross between witch house, modern classical, "weightless" grime and drill and bass. not good, though.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 24 May 2019 13:37 (five years ago) link

Listening now, so far it seems well within his comfort zone, a lot of familiar off kilter beats and bass riffing, a bit less abrasive than some of his previous work. Very listenable, but not exactly revolutionary.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 24 May 2019 13:41 (five years ago) link

Haven't listened to the new one yet, but none of the singles got me going (except for Lynch), and I really liked You're Dead!. Honestly I'd like to hear a Thundercat-less FL record again. It's kinda cool how their sounds have become inseparable, but I wonder what he would do on some track without the 'just add Thundercat' plugin.

Re-listening to jonwayne's debut 'Bowser' and it holds up, such well-written tracks and rich video game synths. Better than all the retro-sounding indie game soundtracks around today. Probably my favorite non-FlyLo record to come out of the Low End Theory scene (along with Bad Vibes, and the first Teebs album).
