Hey (Extended Mix), Friday, 4 March 2016 03:06 (eight years ago) link

i'm really bad at intuiting what makes a proper smash hit but this new keke palmer/jeremih sounds like one to me? immense

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 4 March 2016 19:39 (eight years ago) link

and also to go back to the previous topic of conversation the tweet album really is heavenly, i feel v blessed to have both that and the king album in life in the same two-month span

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 4 March 2016 19:47 (eight years ago) link

idk if it's been mentioned in another thread but yuna's new single with usher is really lovely

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 4 March 2016 21:49 (eight years ago) link

the GUITARS on the tweet album, my god

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 4 March 2016 22:40 (eight years ago) link

The Keke Palmer sounds like a hit in the way Carly Rae Jepsen songs do, and coming from an R&B context it might actually be one. I'm all for it.

breastcrawl, Friday, 4 March 2016 22:56 (eight years ago) link

As for Tweet, it's amazing to me that she had that sound on Southern Hummingbird, and it sounded fresh back then and at any given point during the 14 (!) years that have passed since then, and it still sounds fantastic now.

breastcrawl, Friday, 4 March 2016 23:02 (eight years ago) link

yeah I'm loving this Tweet alb, much more than the King one

K-Major is probably my favorite male rnb artist at the moment. Just love his voice.

^new-ish Omarion

ulysses, Friday, 11 March 2016 20:47 (eight years ago) link

Damn this K Major tape is incredible. That guy's voice is so different, and he's got a little bit of Jeremih's inventiveness in his delivery

Evan R, Friday, 11 March 2016 20:57 (eight years ago) link

I like that Omarion track, too, b/c I irrationally like a lot of recent Omarion, but I'm tired of hearing Ghostface over soul music. Time to put Ghostface over trap or something just to see what happens

'Dadada...Struggle' by Tweet is my new obsession...just sayin...

Anderson .Paak & Free Dadicals' SXSW set is streaming here, though you gotta click on each track of the set list. Starts with a couple of rap songs, but mainly R&B-funk-based. Especially like his singing while drumming, guitarist who knows his blues, Nile Rodgers and Santana, while keeping it concise, as does the bassist, who knows he ain't Jaco and doesn't wannnabe. Good spare-to-layered laptop too. More the sound than the words (or the rapping) for me so far, and occasionally bland anyway, but he and they got it:

Although I guess it's also Dadicals re talk of family and use of musical heritage, even work in a bit of "Let's Dance."

The Anthony Hamilton record is quite good. Super churchy, super Delfonics-y.

Evan R, Thursday, 24 March 2016 17:44 (eight years ago) link

He's gonna be performing on a bill with Fantasia near me, in May. I wanna see that

Anybody feeling this Gallant album? Rich, forward-looking R&B with shades of Maxwell and Frank Ocean. Sounds v good and v well crafted, if a little over familiar

http://www.npr.org/2016/03/31/472145212/first-listen-gallant-ology

Evan R, Tuesday, 5 April 2016 15:07 (eight years ago) link

The Gallant album is gorgeous!

K-Major just did this song for some friends of mine. I think it's amazing but I'm biased of course.

was very impressed with how gorgeous the gallant album sounds, less impressed that after a few listens i can't really recall any hooks, early days yet i guess tho

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 8 April 2016 14:03 (eight years ago) link

i'm listening again and was trying to work out what the melody of the "episode" hook reminded me of and it's... "i wanna sex you up"

cher guevara (lex pretend), Saturday, 9 April 2016 09:21 (eight years ago) link

def a lotta familiar sounds on this one.

not an uncommon groove, I guess, but "bourbon" reminds me a lot of king's "the greatest."

dc, Saturday, 9 April 2016 12:57 (eight years ago) link

i like the Gallant album

forgot about this one, even more proof she is the new ci-error wrt fifth element

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 20:24 (eight years ago) link

fifth harmony i mean lol

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 20:25 (eight years ago) link

That Toni Romiti song is impressively low wattage.

Tim F, Friday, 15 April 2016 21:03 (eight years ago) link

right yeah that's what's fascinating, like the style/delivery of the original was completely incidental to the actual underlying anthem they were attuned to and hollering out. real culture tunes like this are the very rarest pokemons

r|t|c, Friday, 15 April 2016 21:29 (eight years ago) link

another example i've long thought this about is sizzla 'give me a try' from idk 2003 (actually usually the rihanna version later maybe). like it was always just around in a way nothing to do with what we think of as ~heat~, it wasn't a minor hit that came/went/was remembered, it just became a lowkey standard that everyone knows off by heart with no paper trail whatsoever. and if you play it out now you will shell down any gathering guaranteed
