aw yeah the nao record rules too. happy r&b day everyone

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 29 July 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

texturally this nao record is extremely my shit

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 29 July 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

i agree on the texture. vocally it's a little.... how do i put this..... british?

J0rdan S., Friday, 29 July 2016 21:36 (seven years ago) link

oh yeah but I don't particularly mind

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 29 July 2016 21:47 (seven years ago) link

wow fantasia, i knew she could do earthy but i didn't know she could do light and spacious, this album is great

had been underwhelmed by nao's ep and the singles i bothered hearing (and annoyed by her all-caps insistence), the album wasn't doing much for me but around "in the morning" it sort of...blossoms quite nicely and surprisingly

catching up on the pj album mentioned earlier too and that's really brilliant on one listen, though could do without the children's tv interlude thing and also why does g-eazy exist

lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:25 (seven years ago) link

i hereby decree a use other words please ruling on texture

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:34 (seven years ago) link

certainly a bit of the old heliumballoonageorge about this nao. sounds ok on flick-thru but i don't anticipate ever recalling the songs

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:42 (seven years ago) link

two-thirds through it i was thinking it could use either more hooks (cuz none were particularly memorable) or fewer hooks (and just commit to the semi-reverie she was poking at) but around the time when the beats got crunchier it seemed to resolve itself, albeit this is just one listen and i couldn't sing anything back to you yet. it's a weird thing about these aluna-ish voices that they're all ethereal/breathy but when it comes down to a whole album surprisingly inflexible

lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:46 (seven years ago) link

i mean one-third

lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:46 (seven years ago) link

of the fantasia songs that are new to me (only about half the album, though the half i've heard was stunning already) "stay up" is so incredible

lex pretend, Saturday, 30 July 2016 11:48 (seven years ago) link

i would merely add nao to the bashmore dornik etc ersatz uk parlour boogie pile

by the by i really quite like all alunag's new stuff this year! seems to be struggling for momentum though

r|t|c, Saturday, 30 July 2016 12:00 (seven years ago) link

i hereby decree a use other words please ruling on texture

the surfaces are good

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 July 2016 13:04 (seven years ago) link

anyway I too was annoyed at the insistence of nao and wasnt really planning on listening to the record but I came away so pleasantly surprised, much as the particular grooves and sounds it's using are kinda designed in a factory somewhere to make me lose my shit

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 July 2016 13:10 (seven years ago) link

thought it was sort of weird that even beyond the opener being titled "get to know ya" i was reminded at various points of maxwell's now

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Saturday, 30 July 2016 13:15 (seven years ago) link

but around "in the morning" it sort of...blossoms quite nicely and surprisingly

also my initial posts about it itt were almost 100 percent motivated by the synth that appears halfway through "in the morning"

heliumballoonageorge

hehe

anderson paak, kaytranada, gallant over here

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 July 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

the pj is def good. seems like kehlani is aiming for the radio with her new stuff so pj sort of scratches the old kehlani itch.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 30 July 2016 18:13 (seven years ago) link

ngaiire is sorta vaguely r&b, more ppl should be talking about that album other than brad, tim and me lol

― art baengels (monotony),

good record! "Diggin'" is one of my jamz of the year

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 31 July 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link

adding to the Ngaiire love - it is filling the Jessie Ware shaped void in my life right now

boxedjoy, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

Has anyone heard or talked about the new Michael Kiwanuka? I don't like Danger Mouse too much, but he got some good stuff out of the guy. Very melancholy Isaac Hayes.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

ngaiire i think did make the record i wanted jessie ware's "tough love" to be

art baengels (monotony), Monday, 1 August 2016 03:45 (seven years ago) link

PJ was the opening act at the K Michelle concert I was at last night and she was really good. Agree with above that the album is great.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 1 August 2016 10:51 (seven years ago) link

is the kiwanuka an improvement over his first (and imo boring) album?

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Monday, 1 August 2016 14:37 (seven years ago) link

I think so. It's still boring, I guess, but as an aesthetic? First track is this 10-minute epic, which is like Pink Floyd meets "Hot Buttered Soul." Isaac Hayes' "Echoes?"

I know old Stax singer William Bell doesn't exactly fit into this thread, but his new album, This is Where I Live, is nice and he sounded great live last night in a club with the Atlanta based Total Package band.

I know zero about this serpentwithfeet, but the single off the EP is so lovely.

new sevyn streeter single so good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roWVtUlY4e8

this is the album we should be clamouring for

lex pretend, Thursday, 18 August 2016 17:28 (seven years ago) link

Damn that is awesome!

Evan R, Thursday, 18 August 2016 17:49 (seven years ago) link

That Skinny Gucci verse is flames, too

Evan R, Thursday, 18 August 2016 17:49 (seven years ago) link

i don't like it *quite* as much as some of her other singles but i am really excited she's gonna put an album out

dyl, Thursday, 18 August 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

SEVYN!!!!!

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 August 2016 18:29 (seven years ago) link

that single is awesome, love hearing gucci over the "party and bullshit" sample!!

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 18 August 2016 19:30 (seven years ago) link

I've been toying with starting a Sevyn thread because she is just so faultless and it bewilders me that she isn't a major-league star yet.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 20 August 2016 10:30 (seven years ago) link

the Jamila Woods tape is so good. apparently it hasn't been mentioned on ilm yet? I liked the Noname tape but Heavn is much more immediately impressive/appealing imo

lex, PJ and Paris Jones are not the same person.

Man, it's been five years since King of Hearts, and almost seven since the Young Goldie EP. I wonder if he even has a label anymore?

Evan R, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

From what I read last night after coming across the clip, there's an entity that's going to release an EP soon — not sure what label that is though.

maura, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link

EP is a good format for him. Low key, intimate, low stakes. I still return to Young Goldie every year or so and love it

Evan R, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

"tru" is easily one of the most-played songs at the r&b station here so he must have some kinda label support

dyl, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 15:51 (seven years ago) link

been so long since i last thought about lloyd. didnt he have an idiotic rapping phase

still remember u all fronting on 'cupid' though (tim excepted) so WHATEVER GUYS

r|t|c, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

He put out that Playboy Diaries mixtape, which was bad, then got in a feud with Miguel because they both had the same haircut. Then he disappeared.
