good call; that's lovely

Kungs vs Cookin' On 3 Burners "This Girl" is absolutely my jam of the summer. I was forced to play it three times last night. The third time round, the whole bar danced. This made me happy.

i've spent the whole summer outside; it's been pretty brutal. plus, and i know i'm a skipping record on this point, but: lots of music to enjoy this year but no "song of the summer"!

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Thursday, 25 August 2016 15:21 (seven years ago) link

Well, I think most people would say One Dance was that.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 25 August 2016 17:10 (seven years ago) link

really? i feel like the "most people" vote is timberlake but either way i am squarely not on board.

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Thursday, 25 August 2016 17:25 (seven years ago) link

The Timberlake was trying so earnestly and aggressively to be the Song of the Summer that it feels almost cruel to not declare it so.

The Timberlake was trying so earnestly cynically and aggressively to be the Song of the Summer that it feels almost cruel arousing to not declare it so.

I also declare 'this girl' the likeliest song of the summer for me or at least the one that I'll remember the most.

One Dance stayed on top of the charts for... how many weeks?

In my experience Timberlake has received way bigger crowd pops than Drake.

I love "This Girl" though! Where has it been hiding???

Moka brought it up a month ago!

the kungs track really does make me so happy

it's sort of a throwback to the 2012 glory days of black butter, PMR etc - i mean yes it's more dap-kings than that but the pure stompy ebullience of it

Kungs - This Girl

flopson, Saturday, 17 September 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

"this girl" is v amateurish imo, shoutout local girl kylie auldist for a great vocal but the lil french teen had no idea what to do with her

art baengels (monotony), Saturday, 17 September 2016 02:01 (seven years ago) link

I like it a lot

flopson, Saturday, 17 September 2016 16:25 (seven years ago) link

yeah that's banging! digging the 90's vibe

niels, Saturday, 17 September 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

I wasn't into the Kungs track at first but it totally grew on me as summer went along.

*sigh* summer is nearly over. hardly noticed it go by. thinking about an Autumn-themed thread though. not sure whether to make it new tracks only or allow older stuff that just sounds nice and leafy

Need a richly imagistic r|t|c post to tell me why Kungs is bad

tbrr tho i don't actually have a big problem with the tune? i have never rly been particularly fond of twee vintage/modern juxta jobs (DOOP aside of course), something claustrophobic about them, but i think this one just about manages to achieve the mediated, innocuous spontaneity it's going for (which is why "v amateurish imo" is the wild dunce cap observation obv). it's probably a trickier task than it seems, and easily taken for granted

in conclusion: quite acceptable as mayfly fleeting fancy, a bit "yay, cake in the office" to integrate into ur consciousness as a tru totemic summer jam

r|t|c, Sunday, 18 September 2016 12:24 (seven years ago) link

First time I heard it: Those BA BA BA-BA BA BA stabs are a bit crass."
Fifteenth time I heard it: "Those BA BA BA-BA BA BA stabs are the best bits of the track."

mike t-diva, Sunday, 18 September 2016 12:30 (seven years ago) link

yeah like i mean mild jankiness is its approachable appeal. the frenchman's slight holiday tastelessness, compared to how an englishman might have made it either exclusively cool or seaside cringe, or a dutchman expertly garish, or a scandinavian vaguely racist

not sure if this thread will have quite the same impact as the summer jams threads, but here's an Autumn Preserves thread for those who want to continue into October: Summer is over - Post up your AUTUMN PRESERVES !!!!

four weeks pass...

dumped the ""consensus"" summer singles to the playlist. I need to run through and see what's been added to spotify since the start of the season but is there anything obvious that didn't get noted upthread yet?
