"Talk Tonight" is one of many acoustic B-side tracks sung by Noel, and was at the time, the most vulnerable song he had ever attempted. It was inspired by the near-breakup of the band in Los Angeles in autumn 1994, when Noel walked out without telling anyone and headed for San Francisco. He stayed with a girl he had befriended during a previous show there. According to the sleeve notes to The Masterplan, she talked a distraught Noel "off the ledge" and took him to the park where she played as a child. It is also mentioned in the Oasis book by Paul Mathurs, Take Me There, that his friend also had an obsession with Snapple Strawberry Lemonade, which contributed to the line in the song, "all your dreams are made of strawberry lemonade."

how funny, i was at that Los Angeles gig at the Whisky A Go Go on Sunset. they were an absolute mess that night and had no idea they were about to break up.

so many great songs and my picks in the 25-15 range, in particular fade away and rocking chair.

really surprised that cigarettes & alcohol isn't higher.

The one where they were all on crystal meth, they kept having to restart songs and Liam changed the words to 'Live Forever' to "maybe I don't really wanna know/why you pick your nose"?

Noel Gallagher explained that song's meaning to Melody Maker: "It's basically about people who think they're the voice of a generation, or the figurehead of a movement. It's just saying, 'Why are you lot down here looking up at him?' This band is about the music; it's about the songs. It's not about us."

"I wouldn't ever make a political speech, and I'd sack anyone in a band who started doing that," Gallagher continued. "We are overtly political once every five years, when we all go out and vote Labour. But then we turn around and go back to being a band again.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link

i think he changed his mind from the early days. if i remember reading correctly Noel actually did get pretty political later on in the bands life?

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

Gallagher claims that he was drunk while writing the song.[citation needed] According to him, parts of the song were inspired by walking while listening to a Walkman ("walking to the sound of my favourite tune") and using cocaine ("all your dreams are made / when you're chained to the mirror and the razor blade"), . It has been suggested that the song is about drug addiction in general ("need a little time to wake up/need a little time to rest your mind/you know you should so I guess you might as well").

The line "tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon" seems to reference The Beatles' song "Tomorrow Never Knows", though Gallagher claims to have completely forgotten why he felt it was relevant to the song. Over the years, the song was regular on their live performance set.

Towards the end of "Morning Glory", a woman can be heard singing "without a lover to call your own". This is a snippet from a Soul II Soul track called "Love Enuff", which bleeds into track 11 on the Morning Glory album and was a hit in July 1995. Its unclear whether its inclusion is deliberate or not. The song's guitar riff closely resembles "The One I Love" by R.E.M.

Noel Gallagher has regularly declared "The Masterplan" as one of the best songs he has ever written. However, he regrets the fact that it was first released as a mere B-side, admitting he was "young and stupid", when he made that decision. He also claims that Creation Records boss, Alan McGee, upon hearing the song, told Noel it was "too good" to be a B-side. Noel reportedly replied, "Well, I don't write shit songs!"

"Acquiesce" has become a fans' favourite and is regularly played live. Many Oasis fans feel this song should have been held back to go on the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album, with others also feeling the song was strong enough to have been released as a single. This was an opinion that Alan McGee had when he first heard the song; he tried to convince Noel to release "Acquiesce" as a single instead of "Some Might Say". Noel rejected this idea because he was adamant that the work on the single was completed, and was unwilling to have to write another B-side and record it. However, Noel has since said that this and a couple of other songs such as "The Masterplan" were strong enough to have been album tracks and singles.

one of my all-time favorites.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 21:30 (seven years ago) link

What the fuck? I was expecting this to take the #1 spot! Instead, it's going to be something like 'Live Forever' or 'Wonderwall' isn't it? :/

hoping for "Supersonic" at #1 personally

bunny slopes, Sunday, 28 August 2016 21:48 (seven years ago) link

was hoping the masterplan and acquiesce would place higher. "masterplan" is a bigger and better-written "don't look back in anger" imo. "acquiesce" deserved to be the opening track of morning glory

The first line: "I'm free to be whatever I, whatever I like if it's wrong or right it's all right," was written by Noel Gallagher about how his dad used to make him work on a building site with him as a teenager. Noel's dad tried to force him to become a builder.

The band knew this song was a hit as soon as Noel Gallagher first played it to them. Rhythm Guitarist Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs recalled to Q magazine in 2011: "Noel had shown us Whatever very early on and it freaked my head out. It was like, 'Nah you haven't f---ing written that.' It was brilliant."

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 21:55 (seven years ago) link

and there is my number 1.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 21:56 (seven years ago) link

this was the perfect theme song for me. i was leaving the city which i had grown up in and also my parents and moving to San Francisco.

it lasted for seven years and were the best days of my life.

yeah me too as i even voted for it number 2.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

i agree acquiesce should have been the opening track of morning glory but i'd take most of definitely maybe over it, it doesn't really stand out as one of their best or anything to me.

whatever was my #1 as well, the moment when all their bombast worked best

ufo, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:22 (seven years ago) link

Whatever and Columbia are both brilliant, my nos 2 & 3.

Champagne Supernova though, I can't stand. Didn't make my ballot.

nate woolls, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:27 (seven years ago) link

Acquiesce was my number 1.

MarkoP, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:32 (seven years ago) link

Some of the lyrics were written when I was out of it. There's the words: 'Someday you will find me/ Caught beneath a landslide/ In a Champagne Supernova in the sky'. That's probably as psychedelic as I'll ever get. It means different things when I'm in different moods. When I'm in a bad mood being caught beneath a landslide is like being suffocated. The song is a bit of an epic. It's about when you're young and you see people in groups and you think about what they did for you and they did nothing. As a kid, you always believed the Sex Pistols were going to conquer the world and kill everybody in the process. Bands like The Clash just petered out. Punk rock was supposed to be the revolution but what did it do? Fuck all. The Manchester thing was going to be the greatest movement on earth but it was fuck all. When we started we decided we weren't going to do anything for anybody, we just thought we'd leave a bunch of great songs. But some of the words are about nothing. One is about Bracket The Butler who used to be on Camberwick Green, or Chipley or Trumpton or something. He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn't think of anything that rhymed with 'hall' apart from 'cannonball'. so I wrote 'Slowly walking down the hall/ Faster than a cannonball' and people were like, 'Wow, man'. There's also the line 'Where were you while we were getting high?' because that's what we always say to each other. But the number of people who've started clubs called Champagne Supernova is fucking unbelievable. And the album isn't even released yet.

there's something about whatever being an intra albums single that makes it even better somehow

last song that won't receive at least one number one vote.

The sleeve artwork was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in north London. The hand holding the frame is that of art director Brian Cannon. The original idea was to have Liam in the frame before Noel vetoed that idea whilst the shoot was taking place. Instead a female figure was deemed necessary and Anita Heryet, a Creation Records employee, was asked to stand in as cover star for the shot.

"Wonderwall" was such a massive hit, might have been their biggest, that i'm surprised the it couldn't crack the Top 5.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

wonderwall feels so static, i guess it fits with liam's completely bored vocal though

it's definitely their track with the biggest legacy though
