ILM's 2016 End of Year Albums & Tracks Poll / VOTING THREAD

I have a new project (maybe the phrase 'life-consuming folly' would be better) in which I'm making a mix for every year since 1860. The rough 2016 mix I just put up works well-enough here as it contains 47 tracks which are nearly all nominated here, either on their own or on an LP.

whew I got my tracks and albums down to 25 each but I like doing weighted ballots so getting a good sense of ranking will take some re-listening and thinking bout stuff.

Hazel English - Never Going Home -- very pretty indie pop, kinda like Beach House imo.

shout-out to Brigid Mae Power, outstanding folk artist from Galway. voting for that LP for certain.

my favorite discovery from the nominations thread was Andrew Pekler's Tristes Tropiques. worth a listen for anyone who's into experimental electronic/ambient music.

sorry "experimental" is a lame descriptor. idk. it's good.

This is what I wrote about Tristes Tropiques:

I saw Pekler’s music described not as “ambient electronic” but as “abstract electronic” and I can’t think of a better descriptor. It’s a broken soundscape that feels vaguely familiar while never settling into place. It’s like a video game with bad draw-in problems; paths and surroundings shift and appear from nothing, are granted solidity, and they fade back to grey mist. Tristes Tropiques is another album I would have given time nor attention to before this year. With a constantly changing present it pulls the attention to the now. No prediction is safe or right or true.

I used to love Pekler's Sad Rockets jazz project, but I haven't listened to him in 15 years, could check this one out.

I love that Hazel English track. My friend Adam went to see her show a few weeks ago and said she was the tiniest person he's ever seen.

fans of that track might also enjoy dj python - sunset drive, which also churns beautifully

the traumprinz track that topped the ra list ("2 bad") is similarly nice in a "it has the exact right amount of things in it" way

"2 bad" is a very pretty track, but putting it at the top of a list just seems gauche. as a rarity it's charming, as an anthem it's cloying

the ra blurb is definitely egregious in attaching The State of The World to this pretty and weightless thing

I'm not very metal at all but the Alcest album is pretty nice (though arguably itself not very metal either).

I'd love to see Calling In Sick place high.

i agree that listing "2 Bad" at the top of the RA poll puts too much of a spotlight on it, but I don't think in general they rep for tracks that could be described as anthems, do they? I really liked the whole 28 min EP that it's from, 2 The Sky

"2 The Sky" from that Dj Metatron EP is so good. Have that on constant loop.

Talking of songs en français, I got really into this Belgian rapper Shay in the last couple of months - voted for her "PMW" single but tbh the whole Jolie garce album is brilliant, hooks and charisma throughout

I will limit my stumping to Jeff Rosenstock's WORRY, which I should emphasize will definitely not be of any interest to those w/ no patience for pop-punk and/or rock music generally. It inspired me, for better or (likely) worse, to try and make music for the first time in a decade. You can read lots of words about it in lots of places but you're better off just downloading it (donation/PWYC) from his label.

worry is gonna be real high on my albums ballot. it's at least as good as or better than btmi!'s vacation which is his other great record.

the mini punk rock opera on side two of worry is prob my favorite thing that i heard last year

yeah I stitched "Blast Damage Days" onwards into a single mp3 and I listen to it once a day at minimum

That second half is so good. It's easy to click on "To Be A Ghost..." and end up listening to the whole rest of the album.

he played a surprise acoustic set here in TO between Christmas and NYE and it totally made my holidays, "To Be a Ghost" was probably the highlight

I think I actually prefer the first Emma Ruth Rundle album but yes it is a very excellent listen
