Peepee was a Thug also-ran who never achieved liftoff but had some good songs c 2014, iirc
― flopson, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 18:26 (seven years ago) link
thug also ran? he doesn't really remind me of thug on that
who was that chubby super hardrock dude that never wore a shirt from detroit that deej was really big on then he went to prison? (like this was at keef's ilm peak era?) kinda reminds me of that

Yes, deej! Thanks that was driving me crazy, did I ever tell you I watched this "documentary" on Yae Yae on Amazon Prime that was mostly just unedited footage of them getting wasted in this shitty house and talking shit to the camera then one of his guys played Russian Roulette for real
― blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 19 January 2017 00:09 (seven years ago) link
no. that sounds depressing. i try to stick to the music

Yeah it was weird, like really unedited iPhone footage, but yeah uh they seemed like real street and not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed

re: hip hop evolution, it's pretty transparently "we read jeff chang's can't stop won't stop and dan charnas's the big payback & made a doc series out of them"...but...like it's really cool to see all this footage of, for example, the fantastic romantic five vs. cold crush, or actually tracking down coke la rock to talk about the herc parties, it's a great watch either way and saw a lot of footage of stuff i'd read about but never seen

I don't know shit about Lil Ugly Mane (I know only marginally more than shit about the current rap world, but I digress) other than that he is from Richmond, VA and he gets compared to a lot of things that I don't have much time for under most circumstances. But when I saw that an album he released under the moniker Bedwetter, was the #1 album of the year at Rate Your Music chart (yeah, it's early, but still) so I checked it out.
http://liluglymane.bandcamp.com/album/volume-1-flick-your-tongue-against-your-teeth-and-describe-the-present
Apparently Volume 1: Flick Your Tongue Against Your Teeth and Describe the Present was accompanied by an impassioned Facebook post by Mane decrying this county's mental healthcare situation and how it failed him when he tried to seek help.
The album is pretty harrowing stuff, produced claustrophobically perfectly emulating a fucked-up hazy mental state, but with forcefully delivered words - like he's fighting against himself for clarity he desperately needs - with an eloquence and especially a vulnerability that, frankly, seems a complete contrast from the crap he gets compared to. It's like he realized nobody's hard enough to not need help sometimes, and that the inability to get it perpetuates a lot of bullshit. A very personal statement that points out, maybe unintentionally, how whole communities can be lost over our inability to deal with it.
Personal therapy that also critiques our current inability to deal with mental health issues as a society with a laid back noir style that makes me flex my head as well.
