never heard of Cellars.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

Heard of them/her, but not this track. It's aight.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 23 January 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

The album is fantastic. Last year's most underrated album for me.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

they sure did drape a nice guitar tone over the shapeless ghost of a song there

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 23 January 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

Love this! Think it was in my top 3.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:22 (seven years ago) link

This is okay, but again ruined by pointless rock guitar. Would work much better as pure synth pop.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

xxpost, ha!

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

special bonus lol just for rob & longneck - https://soundcloud.com/deejay-theory-vip/starbwoy-theory-needlz-edit

lol this is mental but that riddim is bulletproof. I wouldn't have blinked at this showing up on the ricky blaze album

rob, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:27 (seven years ago) link

that's a lot more fun than the original.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link

christine and the queens sounds like michael jackson and also like a the quiet bit in one of the world cup songs before there's some big chanting

starboy is soul crushing

saer, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

:D

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link

"Atomic Number" seems like exactly the kind of thing i'd like but I don't like it. The thudding way they deliver "Symbols of IN-FIN-UDDY"

69 COMET CONTROL "Artificial Light" [174 points, 5 votes]
https://youtu.be/eN_erET606A?t=34m54s

gr8080, Monday, 23 January 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link

I'm guessing this is indieprog of some kind?

Matt DC, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:01 (seven years ago) link

Haha yaaaay, my #3! A psych ballad to end them all. What Spiritualized and Secret Machines strove in vain to create

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:01 (seven years ago) link

i have never heard of this band
i like the album art tho

nxd, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:02 (seven years ago) link

Glad to see this place. Best thing they've done so far.

warning to Tuomas - it's 100% pointless rock guitar.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

Wow, I'm really surprised this made it! The whole album is really worth hearing

tangenttangent, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

Never heard of them before but I like this. Is the rest as Spiritualized-y as this?

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

nice to see Olatunji though I didn't vote for him

next best so far is Case/Lang/Veirs, which passed me by until multiple people whose taste I trust put it high in their EOY lists; I like this, will get round to the album at some point.

only heard the French version of Christine & The Queens has have been listening to the French version of the album; English version makes it seem more pedestrian, not that I really got into the album much either.

Chairlift - third-tier synthpop from 2004
Underworld - lukewarm attempt at last-track-of-the-night emotion from 2004
Starboy - The Weeknd has stepped up his game to the level of a song I wouldn't turn off if it came on the radio but wouldn't notice either
Cellars - adequate song but how are ppl into this sort of thing not drowning in '80s pastiche yet

lex pretend, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

not 100% sure that YouTube link is to the correct song (its to where i *think* the track starts on a YouTube for the entire album)- feel free to let me/mods know if not.

gr8080, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:05 (seven years ago) link

Comet Control is the least memorable name for a psych-rock band ever.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:07 (seven years ago) link

surprised to see comet control on a tracks poll, i like both their albums tho

ciderpress, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:07 (seven years ago) link

You got it, Grady

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

― Le Bateau Ivre

This is as spaced-out as they've gone on their two albums (or with prior band Quest For Fire). Most other stuff is somewhere between distorted updates of late 60s psych and heavier takes on the early 70s Pink Floyd sound.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

Is this Bargain Basements tune on Spotify at all?

Matt DC, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

gr80 if it's possible to do a mod edit it'd be nice to spell Olatunji's name right for his entry!

lex pretend, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:10 (seven years ago) link

Thanks, I'll take it, sounds good.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:10 (seven years ago) link

The rest isn't quite so blissed-out as this, but the strength of the songs is still there. Try 'Criminal Mystic' - that's the other standout track for me.

tangenttangent, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:11 (seven years ago) link

It is on Spotify. It isn't about the tune, it's about the SPACE

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:12 (seven years ago) link

Olatunji my favorite so far, so SPRIGHTLY.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:13 (seven years ago) link

not really feeling anything posted yet :(

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:15 (seven years ago) link

hearing the Olatunji song in a crowded basement club with an excellent soundsystem was one of the musical highlights of my summer. Shame there was an MC who kept barking the 'I don't know about you' part while holding the mic by the mouthpiece. Still, even he didn't ruin it.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:21 (seven years ago) link

I gave the Comet Control album a listen after it placed in the metal poll and thought it was decent but I'm not enough of a fan of that particular sound to ever love something like this. I mean I like Spiritualized's first few albums but I don't really have a hankering for *more* of it.

68 MIGUEL FT KACEY MUSGRAVES "Waves (Remix)" [174 points, 7 votes]

a musical hilight of the year for me was sitting next to alfred at p4k while we fanned out to miggy performing waves

gr8080, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:28 (seven years ago) link

Thumbs way up

voodoo chili, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:28 (seven years ago) link

oh think this is my first vote to place
love this version

nxd, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:31 (seven years ago) link

beautiful version, I voted for it, who would've thought Kacey remixing Miguel would end up sounding like the xx

lex pretend, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:32 (seven years ago) link

Didn't vote for this but yeah this is a great version.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:34 (seven years ago) link

wow

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:34 (seven years ago) link

This is a terrible idea on paper and awesome in reality.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:35 (seven years ago) link

Other way round for me

i believe that (s)he is sincere (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:36 (seven years ago) link

case/lang/veirs album is great, nice to see 'Atomic Number' place though I voted 'Song for Judee'

getting a 'Torn and Frayed' vibe from the Comets track chorus

niels, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:38 (seven years ago) link

this is nice. always been hot and cold on miguel but this works really nicely. don't know if i've ever heard the original.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:40 (seven years ago) link

Enjoying the Comet Control. Reminds me of Dragon Turtle and King Black Acid, which is no bad thing.

The Olatunji is great, too. Making me nostalgic for The Gambia (not that that's a particularly safe place to be, right now).

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Monday, 23 January 2017 16:41 (seven years ago) link

I'd never heard this Waves remix before. This is a brilliant version.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:42 (seven years ago) link

i love the original, one of my favorite tracks from last year. this version is okay but not superior

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 16:42 (seven years ago) link
