would be surprised if the Radiohead album didn't Top 10 at least, even if it didn't place particularly high it probably got on the most ballots

I got about 40 seconds into that and went and put on Paramore's Daydreaming instead.

how's life, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

Going by the results of the Pitchfork top 30 albums poll, I think the album will probably be right up there.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:17 (seven years ago) link

Same with the Mercury Music Prize poll.

FUCK RADIOHEAD

gross dude, they're kind of old and weedy

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:18 (seven years ago) link

i think this board has mellowed on radiohead considerably anyway, though maybe the albums poll will prove me wrong

the decline of ilx is REAL

Lol, aaw. Not a bad idea

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

p sure they've always done very well on ILX polls? how would this signal a decline? xp

Cannot restate 'you're not listening to the right indie rock' enough. Also, if there are literally hundreds of albums like that Comet Control song, um, can I please hear them? I mean, I've heard as much 90's space rock as anyone should, and this feels more glorious than p much all of it, but maybe I missed a few hundred albums here and there?

I'm sure you and emil.y are right about that and I'm sorry for writing off the entire "genre." idk what a better shorthand would be, acclaimed indie? the random indie that crosses my radar? as a lapsed indie listener, I remain surprised at how lots of it these days has turned into a kind of ritualized folk music, reproducing the same touchstones over and over

I wasn't really exaggerating about "hundreds of albums"--dude bought 10-20 records per week and while his tastes weren't entirely narrow, he did buy anything that could even remotely be described as space rock. those bands have all dissolved in my memory into a stew of astronomical references. idk, have you heard 7% Solution's first album?

rob, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

I don't think I've ever heard a Röyksopp song that I've liked more than "Poor Leno"

there is nothing wrong with hating radiohead, can't they just fuck off, finally.

calzino, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

LOL Lex is that Radiohead's font?

This was my thought too. Doesn't this logic mean the board has been in decline pretty much since it started?

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:26 (seven years ago) link

this doesnt even seem good for radiohead

iirc there was a fake david axelrod one on the album that sounded okay idk

Yes! The highlight of Anti. One of the best songs she's ever done.

Like but do wish that had been the duet with Miguel it seemed to be screaming out to be.

nashwan, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link

LOLZ at predictable fury that some people like a track by Radiohead. I'm not a fan, but have to admit that this & Burn The Witch are both pretty good, though I'd say Daydreaming doesn't get really good until about four minutes in.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link

love the beginning of this song so much, a chintzy sounding drum machine out of which lushness blooms, etc.

nxd, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link

lol

this rih is great and emblematic of the album as impulsive engrossing hot mess - never clear who is rly dealer or drugged and whose pride is at stake, and then the 2nd verse is just the 1st again lolz

r|t|c, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link

lolz or repeated to underscore its ambiguity, whatever

r|t|c, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:38 (seven years ago) link

catching up still but both "cry" and "no problem" are fantastic

i love how joyful "no problem" is

marcos, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:39 (seven years ago) link

even wayne's verse is good

I like Radiohead and both this song and album but honestly who can be even remotely fucked to defend them against anyone in 2017?

Rihanna tune is great, maybe I should actually listen to the album - everyone had pretty much written it off by the time I even got round to thinking about it but it appears there's a reappraisal going on now?

yeah really, not like they're going to win new converts

as a liker of some rih things idrg "Kiss it Better" tbh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:44 (seven years ago) link

the rihanna album is a real mess, very high highs and very low lows. kiss it better one of the highs obv

i love the way the sped-up gospel choir on no problem feels constantly on the verge of explosion

ufo, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:45 (seven years ago) link

i still would love to hear a version of "kiss it better" that had..... better taste wrt to the guitar, but i recognize it mostly as a minor classic and w/in the context of anti it's great

the four tet remix is also wonderful

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:49 (seven years ago) link

and then the 2nd verse is just the 1st again lolz

this is the kind of thing that made me rub my eyes in disbelief that the album got talked up as High Art because of its Tortured Perfectionist Gestation. they literally didn't bother writing a second verse!

it's great anyway obv, who cares when it feels like crack

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:49 (seven years ago) link

'i miss the old kanye' >>>>>>>>>>>> 'no problem'

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:52 (seven years ago) link

"work from home" has that same feel as 2014's "post to be" and i'm kind of tired of that sound

marcos, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link

i love "no problem" ... as far as chance making his first genuine attempt at a radio hit it turned out about as good as anyone could have hoped, it stays true to his art and was also very successful on commercial terms which feels pretty rare

that said his parts on it are rather inessential aside from the concept of the song hewing close to his own personal mission -- it's a showcase for 2 chainz & wayne and luckily they both turned two of their best verses in several years. wayne in particular is a revelation on that song imo.

the ellen performance was also one of the best live tv things i saw all year

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link

his art his personal mission yuh huh okay

r|t|c, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 15:56 (seven years ago) link

i'm guessing it's definitely not placing but i love 2 chainz and wayne on the "key to the streets" remix

lol the second verse in kiss it better is different but only by two words, maybe stranger than if it was identical

ufo, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

Daydreaming was my number 2. The moment I heard it I knew my waning faith in this band was restored. The album is spectacular. Haters be fucked.

and not even a "do u see" kind of change that alters the meaning substantially. it is quite strange! she sings it as if she doesn't notice she's already sung it

She sings everything like that in fairness.
