Otherwise, what a shit list. Huge decline in quality from the beginning of the decade.

I still like these (voted for Joy Orbison) but yeah this list doesn't represent the music of 2009 particularly well.

The Big Pink definitely the Glasvegas of this list.
― devvvine, Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:00 (seven years ago) link
My ignorance of this year is pretty shocking. Hyph Mngo out of the ones I know.
― chap, Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:00 (seven years ago) link
Sea Within A Sea, quite obviously. I don't even care that it's kind of a rework of the 2008 winner
― imago, Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:21 (seven years ago) link
I listened much more to worriedaboutsatan and Her Name Is Calla, but this list seems pretty representative of what was big that year, no? Boy, indie sure seemed promising that year, huh?
― Frederik B, Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:29 (seven years ago) link
Fuck Buttons is the only one I could stand to listen to and even then I'd need some provoking.
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:46 (seven years ago) link
the year of GAPDYX when only 6 bands released music. From what I recall, this year was peak brostep, peak lumbersexual and kind of a faddy year for music in general. Still got a soft spot for some of these songs, like Brothersport (one of the few great moments on a highly-overrated and patchy album). I also love the naivety of Let's Go Surfing. Went for Sea Within A Sea which is still really great. This year finally feels like it was a long time ago now though, and the music reflects that.

"lumbersexual"?
― Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:52 (seven years ago) link
you know, the whole Bon Iver 'let's wear woolly jumpers and drive 4x4s as though we live in forest cabins' thing
― Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 23 February 2017 11:57 (seven years ago) link
The lack of Fever Ray is kind of surprising.
― Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 23 February 2017 12:46 (seven years ago) link
I think there was Fever Ray in the 08?
― chap, Thursday, 23 February 2017 12:58 (seven years ago) link
Aha, you're right.

Beyoncé - Telephone30 3157 Major Lazer - Pon De Floor33 3349 The xx - Islands35 3491 Passion Pit - The Reeling36 3518 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll
I remember liking Yeasayer at the time but can't remember anything about them now. My top contenders are Pon De Floor/Telephone/Islands/Zero
Whenever I go back to that Passion Pit album, I just get sad about how nothing else dude has done has come close to working for me. That album is great, though.

"Party In The USA" might be better than all of these.
― billstevejim, Thursday, 23 February 2017 14:56 (seven years ago) link
Yeasayer were a poorman's AC, they even went to the same high school and lived in Brooklyn but tried to pass themselves off as a Baltimore band.
― flappy bird, Thursday, 23 February 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link
though their big song, i think it's ambling alp, is p good
― flappy bird, Thursday, 23 February 2017 15:14 (seven years ago) link
They did a song last year,I Am Chemistry, that was almost a little diverting, but yeah, hipster scrapheap for the most part
― imago, Thursday, 23 February 2017 15:15 (seven years ago) link
The first Yeasayer album is good, as is Ambling Alp. The album wasn't, though, and I've liked nothing they've done since.

One of these. A lot of hype machine-y tracks on this list that I remember listening to a lot that just don't hold up anymore. Also, there are people who actually think that Empire State of Mind is a good song and not just a tourism commercial?
― ridiculous perm ban decision (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 February 2017 15:52 (seven years ago) link
ESoM is a good song that is also a tourism commercial.
― ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Thursday, 23 February 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link
"ambling alp" is a great song but "o.n.e." is way better and if it were here i'd be voting for it. first half of that album is still their best work (iirc someone here likened it to lindsey buckingham? "poor man's animal collective" feels way off regardless)
otherwise i think i'd vote for "telephone," "bad romance," "french navy," or "heads will roll"
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 February 2017 16:36 (seven years ago) link
not that i'm here to defend yeasayer really bc what i've described as their "best work" is the only good work they've done lol
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 February 2017 16:39 (seven years ago) link
When Yeasayer were good they were pretty much a poor mans AnCo, and that was quite good. Then they changed and became boring.
― Frederik B, Thursday, 23 February 2017 16:40 (seven years ago) link
Agreed with Brad on "O.N.E.," which is far better than "Ambling Alp." There were a couple good songs on their debut, as well, namely "2080" and "Sunrise"--I still jam to this one
― ridiculous perm ban decision (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 February 2017 16:48 (seven years ago) link
Considering how recent this is, it is amazing how little memory I have retained of many of these bands (Yeasayer, The Horrors, La Roux, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart). The Big Pink I only really remember because of Nicki Minaj's use of "Dominos."

I liked the first Yeasayer album but thought the second one was terrible although I'd struggle to recall exactly what was wrong with it.

i remember where i was when i watched Michael Jackson's death unfold. i was working at LAX, some 30 miles from Neverland. first report was they were taking him to the hospital. we turned on the TV and watched, when we could, the day happening. a really sad day and couldn't believe that voice was gone forever.

will still do these run-off polls but for the most part it's over.

So could we consider Bad Romance to be in the same class of 2000s pop classics as Get Ur Freak On, Toxic, and Ignition (remix), or nah?

LOL @ Animal Collective being thwarted (as they should be) by Lady Gaga. The vocals on that track are whiny and fucking annoying.
