what a bummer if three bright eyes records placed and no desaparecidos
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link
no way Read Music / Speak Spanish doesn't place.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link
I did like this album but not heard it in years. I need to dig out my cd's and give the 3 albums I have a listen
Desaparecidos album I still love but ive never heard the recent one. was it any good?
― Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link
Yeah it was solid as hell
Just in case it doesn't place, another classic from the Fork archives: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/2288-read-music-speak-spanish/
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link
thank u for reassuring me simon
revised: how righteous for read music to place over every bright eyes record
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link
Lol. I love Read Music/Speak Spanish, but this is my favourite Bright Eyes album by a mile and this was third on my ballot and forever in my heart. This was the first 'weird' emo album I ever owned and the fact that it took me so many more listens to get into and interpret just made it all the more rewarding.

My 2003 Livejournal bio and archive links etc were adapted from the Lover I Don't Have to Love lyrics...

TOO LOW

Haha waht
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:42 (seven years ago) link
So happy Julien Baker placed! Also, Desaparecidos is bound to place, and rightfully so imho. Lifted... indeed doesn't hold up well tbh.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:43 (seven years ago) link
Emoprog forever. My #2. Every track holds up. This album is all over the place in the best possible way.
― tangenttangent, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:43 (seven years ago) link
Ugly Organ is great so far!
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link
I ended up giving this one some nostalgia points
― ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link
I would invite a subpoll of 10+ minute emo album closers, Ugly Organ vs Lifted vs. Clarity vs. Is Terrified (and surely others)
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:48 (seven years ago) link
Mordy, sprained ankle and lifted are both listed with 226 points, did they tie or is it a typo?
― devvvine, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:49 (seven years ago) link
Lifted has a #1 vote which acts as a tiebreaker
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:49 (seven years ago) link
ah cheers
― devvvine, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:50 (seven years ago) link
yay! amazing album and another one that i could see placing higher in ten years
The flipside of this is, imagine what we might consider as being w/in the scope of "emo" a decade from now.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:56 (seven years ago) link
second stage too low!!!!
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:57 (seven years ago) link
also for a record where almost all of its songs tend to expand and expand they sure do nail the straight pop-punk track

in lolcollege i was close friends with the namesake of "lifted"'s penultimate track... it kinda ruined her internet life when it was released

wow damn that *would* disrupt one's life
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link
the second desaparecidos record is great and is also proof positive that conor oberst writes bad lyrics
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link
Not to be genre-policing, but can someone explain to me how Julien Baker belongs in this poll? On first listen it sounds like 500 other singer-songwriters, but maybe I'm missing something.
― ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link
god i sure did fucking love lifted in high school (i'm revisiting it now)
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link
its actually a thoughtful and accurate tribute, which somehow makes it even worse
xposts

I still don't understand why someone who's so weirdly good at writing pop-punk songs would stoop to writing Band of Horses b-sides
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link
idk i don't think there's a lot separating julien baker from something like rainer maria's "rise." in interviews she talks about how much she loved fob and her songs, in terms of the way the chords move and the way she sings over them, show it imo
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link
she also makes me very emotional
― devvvine, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link
also her band (formerly the star killers, i don't remember their current name) is super emo
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link
Not entirely conviced yet.

xxp - Lol, I read that like the name of her band is Super Emo.
― ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link
more seriously while she superficially sounds like a lot of other songwriters she is working in a very different register
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link
(i looked it up, her band's name is currently forrister)
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link
xp 'Superficially' is exactly the mode I was listening to her album while trying to finish something before a deadline.
― ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link
there wasn't this much controversy about pinegrove ac!!!!
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link
it is kind of strange to have something like julien baker place so high and have zero of red house painters' 90's albums even be nominated (regardless of of toxic present-day Kozelek may be)
― gr8080, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:37 (seven years ago) link
xp If I'd heard Pinegrove I might have.
― ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:40 (seven years ago) link
There are major Fevers & Mirrors vibes in that final stretch of Sprained Ankle. Same very intense, live play-by-play of bottoming out, something that's pretty unique to emo
― Evan R, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link
I'll be curious how many of the top 100 will pass the "is this band emo" test, around 50% I'd guess (fwiw Julien Baker "passes" lol)
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:50 (seven years ago) link
lol, yeah. Also all aesthetic conventions aside, what other genre could this verse have come from?
And I haven't been taking my medsSo lock all the cabinets, and send me to bedCause I know you're still worried I'm gonna get scared againAnd make my insides clean with your kitchen bleachBut I've kissed enough bathroom sinks to make up for the lovers that never loved me
― Evan R, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link
xp Not to give anything away, but there's one such band coming up shortly.
