too looooow. my number 2, hadn’t listened to brand new before the poll and fell in love with this. One of the best rock albums of the century.

Had a terrible job interview last week and listened to it three times on the train home.

Thank you for adding the release years.

The poll is making me realise that I might be a Cursive fan. Domestica is sounding even better than The Ugly Organ.

TOO LOW

my #1

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:05 (seven years ago) link

devil and god def the best rock record of recent memory. my no. 2 as well

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:05 (seven years ago) link

I hoped it would at least beat The Black Parade

Odysseus, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:05 (seven years ago) link

the black parade is not gonna place

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:06 (seven years ago) link

rites of spring record is great but it set a template that i think multiple bands improved upon. for instance i like the embrace record way more

otm

gr8080, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:07 (seven years ago) link

I like this a lot more than Embrace, Ian MacKaye's stuff pre-Fugazi is a bit... immature I feel.

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:09 (seven years ago) link

your emotions are nothing but politics

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:10 (seven years ago) link

Brad I've got to say thanks for your bigging up of The Devil and God... on one of the other emo threads - I'd always written off Brand New for some reason but I love this record.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:11 (seven years ago) link

Rites of Spring is all time, though in hindsight I wish I had nominated End on End instead of the s/t, because End on End pairs that record with their All Through a Life EP, which contains three or four of their best songs:

"All Through a Life" – 2:27
"Hidden Wheel" – 2:31
"In Silence/Words Away" – 3:00
"Patience" – 1:58

They all kinda melted into the same album in my memory, but that EP is essential. Sort of functions as closure for the project, too, since those songs serve as an unexpected happy ending

Diary AND How it Feels haven't placed yet? Dang sunny

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:13 (seven years ago) link

Rites of Spring is definitely my favourite first-wave emo record.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:14 (seven years ago) link

it's interesting bc diary is a classic but how it feels is so deeply beloved by the people who love it that i can't guess where either will place

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:14 (seven years ago) link

i didnt think how it feels would place anywhere near this high

gr8080, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:16 (seven years ago) link

amazing thing about Devil and God is that like Bleed American it starts with what sounds like an attempt to end the world but then manages to keep up the emotional intensity for 50 minutes

I WOKE UP THIS MORNING WITH A PIECE OF THE PAST CAUGHT IN MY THROAT

AND THEN I CHOKED

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:19 (seven years ago) link

yeah every song on devil and god is a compressed explosion in some way

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:19 (seven years ago) link

"not the sun" is my Devil and God fave these days

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:22 (seven years ago) link

God I wish they'd made another album. Putting that little bit of an '80s guitar-pop chime on top of those raw-ass vocals is when it all came together

mine is always and forever "limousine" xp

the hard panned backing vox kill me every time

Completely forgot to vote for Rites of Spring! Would've been top 10 in my ballot so I'm glad it's high here too. Listening to Brand New while walking in the night, it's a great feeling

tangenttangent, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:26 (seven years ago) link

And this one. That intense, hyperventilating reimagining of 80s John Hughes soundtrack pop. Never heard any band (1986 aside, obviously) do anything remotely like this

A trace remains

hell yeah

gr8080, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:27 (seven years ago) link

again, last three tracks on this are the best

i always think of this album as uneven but when i listen to it i'm just constantly thrilled, even/especially during "the prophet"

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:28 (seven years ago) link

i stood outside the Metro for 2 hours watching scalpers sell tickets for $100 to this show before someone sold me one at face value, just in time to see them take the stage: https://youtu.be/hyx95ZoVEZ8

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:35 (seven years ago) link

that and "faces in disguise"

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:35 (seven years ago) link

Yes! My #1, pretty much a perfect album, haven't ever found anything that sounds quite like it.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:36 (seven years ago) link

Diary has always felt so dull and lifeless when i've heard it but the conversation itt made me listen to The Rising Tide which is great! looking forward to spending more time with the other sdre albums.

devvvine, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:37 (seven years ago) link

Rising Tide is my favourite because it's so weird, but I am happy this is here

tangenttangent, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

One of the only times my mom let me skip school was so I could buy this album first thing in the morning on release day.

cwkiii, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:48 (seven years ago) link

I like some tracks from How it Feels but I didn't vote for it. The first two records are much more canonical in my mind. Should probably give it some more attention.

aw.

xp

gr8080, Friday, 10 March 2017 20:52 (seven years ago) link

After Rites of Spring showed up I'm pretty sure that none of my remaining records will place, but this has still been a lot of fun.

so at this point i'm p sure 2 will be 90's, 3 will be 00's... ?

I think emergency & I got 101d

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 March 2017 20:58 (seven years ago) link
