x-post to Michael...Besides, I stole Alex Chilton's "My Rival" from 1979 from Nate for the '78 comp, because he denied it too.. or just never used it.

Matos: see? Mr. Jesus makes everything seem good.

and I'm still mystified that he didn't use ANYTHING off the first Paul Simon album! or "I Can See Clearly Now"! and and and and and....

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

I'd forgotten COMPLETELY about "Dear Mr. Jesus" until Nate blogged about it. I wrote him a very angry letter afterward. That was over a year ago and I have still not forgiven him.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:17 (twenty years ago) link

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:18 (twenty years ago) link

I don't see how "Dear Mr. Jesus" is more atrocious than something like, oh, Gloria Estefan's "The Words Get In The Way".

HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUEAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRHHHHHGGGG!!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:20 (twenty years ago) link

Don't worry, Matos, just imagine Wayne Coyne's fingernails-on-a-chalkboard voice covering "Dear Mr. Jesus" as a B-side on The Flaming Lips' upcoming critically acclaimed release. Feeling better?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:21 (twenty years ago) link

But WAIT! I CAN use this godawful and endless medley by Carol Bunett & Julie Andrews!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

Don't blame me! Blame Ron "Boogiemonster" Gerber for exposing me to it in the first place! (I was playing GTA: Vice City at the time... wotta mindfuck.) More horrifying: apparently it has a b-side.

Also, sorry about the lack of "Me and Julio..." I own the 7", for godsakes, how could I forget it? ("I Can See Clearly Now" = oldies radio "familiarity breeds contempt" situation)

I need a home. :(

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:32 (twenty years ago) link

That 7" has no grooves! (in both senses of the word)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:35 (twenty years ago) link

4 Hero respectfully disagrees with you, Nate, and invites you to eat their shiz.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

?????

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:41 (twenty years ago) link

4 Hero sampled said song for "Mr Kirk's Nightmare," IIRC.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

Have you the heard the ENTIRE song, Nate?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

OVERDOSE!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

Has "Mr Kirk's Nightmare" been used in someone's CD-R?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:43 (twenty years ago) link

1991 awaits

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:43 (twenty years ago) link

Sigh, I will take the blame for this GROSS thread digression. Actually, the thought of my mom and dad jiggling me in their arms during New Years Eve 1971 singing "Things get a little easier" makes me kinda queasy now...

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:47 (twenty years ago) link

On the brown shag carpet with the flower stickers on the wall...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:49 (twenty years ago) link

I'd rather they my parents were REALLY just raising the devil sign rocking out to "Archangel Thunderbird" by Amon Duul II and getting REALLY high during the new years' party...

..but I doubt it.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:49 (twenty years ago) link

"Flower stickers on the wall/Doesn't bother me at all..."

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:49 (twenty years ago) link

"HAPPY NEW YEARS FOR OUR NEW BORN SON! Honey, let's put on Yoko Ono's 'Mindtrain' again... "

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:50 (twenty years ago) link

Holy shit, that 4 Hero track is loony; I plead ignorance and smack myself in the face repeatedly.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 00:55 (twenty years ago) link

No worries. ONE OF US.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:00 (twenty years ago) link

Things did get a little easier once Nate understood.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:01 (twenty years ago) link

Shall I hug you or smite you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:03 (twenty years ago) link

Michael, This person claims it's 1971

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

I like the two dead zombie smiley-faces at the bottom of that page.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:06 (twenty years ago) link

I have a new favorite internet page!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:07 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah, I don't doubt it was first issued in 1971, but if we count a record as being from year or the other by gauging the year of its greatest impact (which is how I've been operating with my 1984 CD-R, more or less) it's a '72 record by a hair.

Dude, if you want to do '71, that's fine with me!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:08 (twenty years ago) link

Shall I hug you or smite you?

Yeah Ned, what is there to life (life, life, life, life, life, life,....)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:09 (twenty years ago) link

WAH

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:09 (twenty years ago) link

1971's my ear of birth, but 1974-1975 is the home of my first memories. It'd give me an excuse to remember all that country music I've forgotten.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah, I don't doubt it was first issued in 1971, but if we count a record as being from year or the other by gauging the year of its greatest impact (which is how I've been operating with my 1984 CD-R, more or less) it's a '72 record by a hair.

Aaaaaaaaah, ok, didn't realize your criteria was peak performance.. sorry.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

my ear of birth

I officially adore this typo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

Daddino is CHEATING!!!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

Plus 1975 is a 'bad' year by rockcrit standards, hence interesting.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:11 (twenty years ago) link

'75 is a GREAT year by reggae standards, however.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

Wait, did I just imagine some exchange recently, one involving Chuck Eddy where he said this, more or less.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

this = the rule of maximum impact

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

*sudden thought* Is there anything which could be described as country reggae? I'm sure there is, but what do you all think?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

yeah yeah yeah, I'm a hardass about this stuff with these Go! CDs. sue me.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

Ned: Toots's (magnificent) cover of "Country Roads"

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

also, the Bellamy Brothers and Willie Nelson did some one-drop-rhythmed stuff

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:14 (twenty years ago) link

plus, "maximum impact" /= highest chart position. if it had been no. 10 in Dec. 71 and no. 6 in Jan. 72 tie goes to the earlier year. < /high horse>

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:15 (twenty years ago) link

So, there is an official standard by which to "date" songs for "GO!" discs then? Because not everything I use ever really "peaked" necessarily. I just go by the "(c) 19??" on the record or CD (unless I have prior knowledge of its true origin, because some releases don't get it quite right)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:17 (twenty years ago) link

"Born to Run" AND "Cylcotron"!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:17 (twenty years ago) link

so do I. album release before single release = date of album. and vice versa.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:18 (twenty years ago) link

Back to that "Mr. Music" website for a moment:

"“Norma Rae” is a film I have watched many times, partly because it is outstanding, but mostly because I never tire of hearing Jennifer Warnes sing “Child of a Working Man.” I am, in fact, a child of a working man."

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:18 (twenty years ago) link

DAMN YOU I WAS GOING TO QUOTE THAT

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 01:19 (twenty years ago) link
