I probably listen to Voodoo least. To my ears BS captured a vibe and groove so indelibly that I keep returning to it.

I definitely know some Brown Sugar partisans

it’s my favorite but I like the others too!

brimstead, Saturday, 22 May 2021 16:05 (three years ago) link

Its def the easiest to listen to.

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 16:32 (three years ago) link

Ease of listening has got nuthin' to do with it.

alrighty then

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 18:18 (three years ago) link

Anyway I think with every album dangelo is becoming more dangelo-y

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 18:22 (three years ago) link

I’ve owned Brown Sugar for more than 20 years and I can’t remember a damn thing about it. Bought it after I’d got into Voodoo at uni. Played it a couple of times, didn’t click, been on a shelf ever since. I should do something about this, yeah?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 22 May 2021 18:53 (three years ago) link

I think so.

It's very 90s sounding now. A man cant do Rhodes and hip hop drums forever.

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 19:10 (three years ago) link

*boom bap drums/crunch/thump etc

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 19:10 (three years ago) link

I’m happy to spin Brown Sugar. I’m happy that afterward he went in the direction he went.

Brown sugar the actual song has not aged well.

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:06 (three years ago) link

is that a stones joke

Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:13 (three years ago) link

comparing drugs to women is always corny and problematic but i don't see what makes it that much worse than the rest of the album

Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:18 (three years ago) link

Not much worse, just that the best songs on there are better. Its melodically weak too. Instrumental is good though. Good to vibe to.

Back to black messiah though. Not to get all stevehoffman, but i I bought it on vinyl thinking that would be the perfect format but the CD seems to handle it better, esp 1000 deaths.

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:58 (three years ago) link

categorically disagree that the melody for brown sugar is weak. rhythm is as important to a melody as range and variation

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:01 (three years ago) link

it’s definitely true that d’s melodies grew much more complex by the time black messiah came around, hard to imagine “another life” appearing on either of the first two albums

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:02 (three years ago) link

does the organ/falsetto hook on BS count as part of the melody? i could listen to that all day

Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:06 (three years ago) link

The hook is good, thats true, I was thinking of the verses.

"categorically disagree that the melody for brown sugar is weak. rhythm is as important to a melody as range and variation"

Thanks for your input. However I didn't comment on the rhythm, I commented on the tunefulness, specifically the verses. To compare to another rnb weed song, its hardly Mary Jane by Rick james.

candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:33 (three years ago) link

what the actual hell

brimstead, Saturday, 22 May 2021 22:16 (three years ago) link

I commented on the tunefulness, specifically the verses.

you...didn’t, actually?

BLACK MESSIAH IS THE GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME

Karl Malone, Sunday, 23 May 2021 03:56 (three years ago) link

the thing is, though, it might be.
and it definitely is of 2010-2020

Karl Malone, Sunday, 23 May 2021 03:57 (three years ago) link

"nvm i already regret engaging"

Already regret you engaging too.

candyman, Sunday, 23 May 2021 04:15 (three years ago) link

Your engaging = kneejerk defensiveness

candyman, Sunday, 23 May 2021 04:16 (three years ago) link

gasp!

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Sunday, 23 May 2021 04:32 (three years ago) link

cant really take any of your opinions on dangelo seriously after your claim in another thread that untitled had nothing to do with prince.

candyman, Sunday, 23 May 2021 07:38 (three years ago) link

man

Left, Sunday, 23 May 2021 08:07 (three years ago) link

Black Messiah is definitely an album I put on for "fun", I am always glad I put it on

burnt hombre (stevie), Sunday, 23 May 2021 08:36 (three years ago) link

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Sunday, 23 May 2021 12:51 (three years ago) link

clearly a tribute to like a rolling stone, and i won’t hear opinions to the contrary

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Sunday, 23 May 2021 12:51 (three years ago) link

Oh wait, how does Beck work into this conversation?

‘The Door’…ffs what a mood killer that tune is

Seriously can't believe the lack of mentions for Voodoo when discussing D'Angelo's finest piece. It captured something culturally as well as musically which I don't think the others did in the same way. It's his defining statement in my opinion.

Wow, 9.5 minutes. I was listening without looking and thought it was a nice tune about to end, and then there was Jay talking and 5+ min of strings and guitar vamping. Happy to hear anything though, sounds like something that would be on a Badu album, or a lost P Funk jam. Sounds Questlove on drums, ofc.

Loving that.

Real Mothership vibe here.

Get a feeling that this isn’t new…might of been left over from Black Messiah…

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Saturday, 13 January 2024 23:05 (four months ago) link

i don't think it's from the black messiah sessions because some of the musicians credited on it weren't on black messiah at all
