Naked City's 'Torture Garden' is a 45, but sounds just as amazing at 33. The only difference is that the magical metal ingredient is Earth instead of Napalm Death.

Archigram's "Padre" at 45 instead of 33! Insane.

i still don't know whether longstocking should be played on 33 or 45. perhaps i should find out if their singer is male or female...

Pole owns this thread.

12" 45's played at 33 with -16% pitch adjust. Dilaudid dub.

"Walk Like An Egyptian" at 33rpm sounds like a quality Goth track.

Tom Waits's "Rain Dogs" at 45 = Edith Piaf still alive at age of 75 after 60 Gauloises a day: C!!

Yello's "Oh Yeah" at 45: The voice back to more or less normal: D-ish.

because i used to be a twat i borrowed and RECORDED IT AT ALL PERMUTATIONS of HOLE and SPEED haha!!
I'd totally be a twat too!

The 45 of "All Right Now" by... is it Free or Bad Co.? I forget... is quite awesome on 33-1/3.

Damnit, I'm bored and would love to try some of these, but everything being suggested for 33's I have on 45, and vice versa!!!

I spent too much time as a child wondering whether it "mattered" if I preferred something at the wrong speed and worrying over records that didn't have the speed labelled. And not enough time playing records at varying speeds.

Pinky & Perky slowed from 45 to 33 = two women, pitched just right. Like discovering that there is no Santa.

Ditto Chip & Dale.

More recently, Shakin' Stevens' "Green Door" at 33rpm has a pleasing bluesy swagger.

This was the first Ilxor thread that ever made me laugh so hard, I peed in my pants: AN EXCITING DISCOVERY!

There have been many more since then. My local laundromat thanks you.

Detroit ghettotech DJs: masters of the 33rpm record at 45. Basic Channel, Dopplereffekt, Adonis, Stardust, various house tracks. While I wish they would add a few more records to their sets, when I'm in the mood for it, it never gets old.

Wouldn't a pitched-down "Green Door" sound exactly like "Sins Of My Father" by Tom Waits?

Banarama's "Cruel Summer" 45 rpm played at 33 1/3 really captures the oppressive feeling of 40+ degree celsius summers.

My brother collects classic Victorolas, and he left one at my mum's house several years ago. When initially cranked up, it would play very fast and then slow down. Since I didn't have any classic platters to play on it, I used this old Shriekback "Nemesis" 12" I bought for 25 cents. The playback was marvelous! Unfortunately, the heavy, blunt stylus fucked up the record. Oh well, it was only 25 cents.

Spirtualized's "Feel So Sad"!!!!

"The instrumental version can be played at any speed, according to Mr J Spaceman."

Try it! It's gorgeous, sorta like Music For Airports/Discreet Music

Also, on David Byrne's vinyl Forestry EP is a version of "Nineveh" that's remixed by Jack Dangers. The record says 33 RPM; adjust it to 45 and voila, it's a killer Meat Beat Manifesto track!!!!

60s punk sped up sounds like new wave. I'm sure some creative folk have gotten ideas this way. Sometimes when I liked something a lot, I would play it at the wrong speed. Try Cocteau Twins this way, it's amazing. Anything with harmonies is trippy.

patrick bateman (mickeygraft), Sunday, 22 January 2006 03:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Are you speaking of speeding Cocteau Twins up or slowing them down?

(Bimble drinks) Silver Coffee (when you're fast asleep) (Bimble...), Sunday, 22 January 2006 04:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Both, depending on the song.

patrick bateman (mickeygraft), Sunday, 22 January 2006 05:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I believe I actually have played them at a faster speed before, but not for long without cracking up laughing and turning it off. I'd really like to hear them slowed down, though. Too bad I don't have any Cocteau vinyl anymore.

the 75% speed "Jolene" is a staple of my magnificent playlist that's been a work-in-progress for about 2 years now

that John Cale track sounds like a lost ZE records classic.

Ha I just posted on the ilx brigade thread that I've been listening to the new Glenn Jones RSD ep on 33 instead of 45 by mistake and it's pretty great that way
