However their producer is a mystical forest sprite whose name cannot be pronounced in english.
Word is he just got an MPC and wants to do some neptunes style beats.
Lauren plays a meaner Elka Organ.

can I be in this hypothetical band, Aaron? I can play drums or guitar or synths. Also, can we recruit lauren? I hear she plays a mean bass.
Oh snap.... I think we've got ourselves a band. I used to take singing lessons. Not that it ever helped. And can play the guitar. And the keytar.

Then give a chance to the Chameleons and the Kitchens, then. I'm not saying this as a criticism, merely to suggest trying 'em out. If ya hate 'em, ya hate 'em, but the Joy Division bait is as obvious as the bullshit you're complaining about.

I heard one Kitchens album, Love Is Hell, and while I enjoyed it, they lack any Simon LeBon flair whatsoever.

Actually, yeah to the Chameleons. Full new album three years ago and the tour a year and a half ago was fucking stellar, beyond words, though I did try to say a few things.
Emotional resonance for every individual in the moment and of the now is vitally important stuff. But those feelings and reactions need not have been just invented yesterday either.
they lack any Simon LeBon flair whatsoever.
Interpol vs. Duran Duran is, I think, no contest.

I think all the "Interpol = Chameleons/KOD ripoffs" statements might be partly musical bragging, but moreso an opportunity for folks who were into the Chameleons and K.O.D. to passionate plug them once again, and also express and explain why Interpol doesn't really excite them. Understandably, this can come off badly. (I plead guilty to all of the above at one point.)
Also, two reason I think Interpol succeeded where, say, Kitchens didn't as much, is a) Interpol is three syllables, and b) Interpol didn't have overtly (literally) gay lyrics.
(Not to say having gay lyrics and few syllables is a recipe for non-success.. Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a shining counterexample to that, among others.. but for a three-to-four piece "indie" band, maybe so WAAAAAY back in the 90s)

Kitchens were a younger band, and were -- too -- accused of being Chameleons rip-offs. They started right around the time the Chameleons first broke up, and ended in 1996 or so.

Hey I actually bought Dookie for the first time last year too, out of some weird pop culture completist urge, though I never liked Green Day much. The first two albums as well. I think I"ll just burn 'em and trade 'em eventually.

People only say they sound like JD because of the singer's voice, or because it doesn't fit the mould of whatever sub-metal hip-hop hybrid is cool these days, or because they think JD comparisons will sell more CD's.
Someone upthread said Interpol weren't bad enough to be hated properly and I think that's true.

Ooooh... "mysterious." Having had the privileged of having listened to Interpol albums I find that really is the best word to describe that tripe.
Paul's voice/singing style is constantly compared to that of the late and iconic Ian Curtis, quite a compliment don't you think?
Except when he's being called out for being unoriginal. Way to take it back, official bio writer!

Samuel Fogarino on Daniel, “He’s the assigned dedicated worrier for the band. He’s the most motivated person I have ever met in my whole life. That nervous energy has a severe output.”
Don’t be fooled by Daniel’s shyness because he can definitely rock out and sing lovely. He is sincere when you talk to him and interested in what you have to say, probably one of the nicest musicians you could ever meet and the only member of the band who doesn’t smoke!
