Moka where are you from? For some reason I think I assumed you were Canadian which I guess is not true because it was a hit there months ago

lol did you maybe subconsciously think "Moka" referred to Moka Only

Hearing it today again on the radio. This time it reminded me of Incubus circa Morningview

there's literally nothing good about 'rude', 'two princes' is 'love at first sight' compared to it.

The guitar solo in "Rude" has some pretty cool texture for a top 40 song in 2014.

This solo is like a shreds video.

I'm from Aguascalientes, Mexico. I used to live in Mexico City and all the trends are up to date in there but in this city we get the trends from 4 to 8 months later.

And then interpreted by Train.

Which might sound like the best or the worst thing ever depending on your taste. This explains why this thing is a hit at the moment.

Moka, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

These are both true, I say:

I must have turned it off before the guitar solo every time I've heard it... checking it out now

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link

oh my gosh what is this cocked-wah monstrosity

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

it's like the guitarist spent hours in the studio trying to achieve a tone that could rival the band's frontman's voice for sheer obnoxiousness

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

... although honestly, it's the groovelessness that grates, far more than the tone

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:08 (nine years ago) link

the only single good thing about that solo is the singer isn't singing but that's only good in a twilight zone world where you're forced to listen to the song and not able to shut it off.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:09 (nine years ago) link

hahaha....it's a bizarre solo, for sure.

i just can't figure out why i don't hate everything about this. even the solo i find a bit endearing.

the worst part of the whole package is *watching* the singer guy. as long as i don't closely watch the video, i'm ok.

alpine static, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link

I'm on board with this song all the way through "Saturday morning, jumped out of bed. "

how's life, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

Rude is a song I would never tire of punching

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 20:46 (nine years ago) link

I don't even hate "rude" and find the "this is so unquestionably creepy!" angle really, really overstated -- it went No. 1, because a lot of listeners probably find it charming

katherine, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

(i.e. it's aimed at the crowd who hears "can I have your daughter for the rest of my life" and thinks "what a romantic proposal, and asking her father's permission, like an old-fashioned gentleman," not "WOW POSSESSIVE #RUDE")

katherine, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 22:35 (nine years ago) link

That creeps me out more! Like it's a deadening reminder that a huge part of the population totally digs all those like #BeARealMan #RomanticMenDoThis #It'sRomanticToBeOwnedByYourMan type hashtag advice blogs etc.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 22:41 (nine years ago) link

and let's not forget: the lead singer has a horrible haircut. She'd be spending the rest of her life with Chris Cornell in '99.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 July 2014 22:48 (nine years ago) link

In a Grantland article, Stephen Hyden compared the guitar solo in "Rude" to Michael Winslow making guitar noises into a microphone. That's all I picture now.

the fact that music twitter would consider this guy asking dad if he can marry his daughter a horrifying, unforgivable affront on females everywhere is positively shocking

alpine static, Thursday, 17 July 2014 00:41 (nine years ago) link

it isn't just music twitter, or at least it has spread to People Who Pay Attention To Stuff Lena Dunham Says Twitter

katherine, Thursday, 17 July 2014 00:50 (nine years ago) link

Surely this tweet is meant to be taken as pretty 'light' commentary on an underwritten popular song? It's like tweeting "Yes, but has anyone given any thought to who'll bring the dogs back IN?" I mean, it definitely points up the icky aspect of the song, but it's not framing it as "a horrifying, unforgivable affront on females everywhere."

Moka, Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:08 (nine years ago) link

the solo is the only joyful part of the song, or at least the only part that brings me joy

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Thursday, 17 July 2014 02:32 (nine years ago) link

Britain has so far snubbed 'Rude' completely and doing so is probably our greatest achievement since inventing the internet.

da croupier, Friday, 18 July 2014 18:15 (nine years ago) link

it's really the only legitimately funny part of the song

don't forget males

mattresslessness, Friday, 18 July 2014 18:18 (nine years ago) link

honestly I didn't even process the message of the song while I was listening to it because I was too busy imagining how many different ways the lead singer could meet a sudden, grisly death

then after I realized what the song was about I decided on hammers to the face

Star Gentle Uterus (DJP), Friday, 18 July 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

sorry i posted that thing about an affront to females, blah blah blah. i take it back, should've kept my mouth shut and stuck to the music. srsly.

no, but we're at the "it betrays a very internet-outrage-bubble-engulfed mindset to think that most people, i.e. the people who made this no. 1, find this remotely creepy." at least with "blurred lines" the general pop-culture consensus was that it was a little sleazy at best

Hope Kyle Mooney is already preparing a parody for SNL.

jaymc, Saturday, 19 July 2014 18:49 (nine years ago) link

Even on the poppy side, you have somebody positive like Taylor Swift; I don't necessarily like her by her music, but I respect that she's making catchy songs for young people. They're loving it. She's a positive person. She's elegant. And I think that's great. It's not just about music. It can't all be about music when you talk about the pop world. For Magic! it is. We're all about music.

This guy doesn't make a ton of sense sometimes.

Probably only because singles in the UK get released to iTunes months after the rest of the world, fully expecting it to replace that terrible will.i.am song at #1 in about 2 weeks

it's a list on radio 1 and #23 on itunes on preorders alone and isn't released until tomorrow

katherine i feel like there's a distinction between a thought that isn't widely considered ugly/regressive and whether a thought is ugly/regressive, i don't think it takes a special Twitter Avant-Liberal mentality to find the whole "asking somebody's parents for their hand" steez to be...i dunno, "douche indicative" if not "douche positive"

beyond which i guess is a conversation about ways of expressing certain thoughts which i don't think Hank Magic! is gonna come out of glowingly either

Daphnis Celesta, Sunday, 20 July 2014 01:05 (nine years ago) link

"it betrays a very internet-outrage-bubble-engulfed mindset to think that most people, i.e. the people who made this no. 1, find this remotely creepy."

yeah, obviously, fair enough...it doesn't mean that a section of listeners are wildly off-base if they do find it creepy
