new album is out
it's pretty ill cousin

so far, i'm not sure he'll ever be writing like super killer songs again but these have some better vocal melodies and the arrangements seems more diverse and interesting than the ploddy L.A. crunch rock he's been into esp on years of refusal

Is the musical style of Morrisseys solo work meant to distance him from the Smiths sound? I know I could enjoy the album more if the music was light and jangly, it seems too heavy and sometimes even clunky (see "Neal Cassady Drops Dead"). Vocal melody on Kick the Bride Down the Aisle is great, delivery too.

It's a shame he's wasted the majority of his life playing with boring musicians. I'm enjoying Staircase at the University though.

now there's a tire: "I've Wasted My Life Playing with Boring Musicians."

I maintain that, plodding L.A. crunch-rock sound notwithstanding, Years of Refusal is a very solid album, probably the best Morrissey record of the 2000s (until now, possibly, I haven't heard the new one yet). Though I must say "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore" creeps me right the hell out.

JRN, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 20:14 (nine years ago) link

I sort of agree that Years of Refusal wasn't a significant drop in quality from his other post-2000 records, but that "plodding LA crunch-rock sound" is hard to get past. This new one is pretty similar in terms of tunes, but the production is a lot less tiring. Lots of funny details in the mix. He's taking on new subject matter - I don't think there's a single song about how nobody loves him - but his lyrics are still so often embarrassing. He's basically making novelty records now - if you listen to one, you've got to keep reminding yourself that it's Morrissey and it's supposed to be daft.

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

the decline of his lyric writing is pretty staggering

this album isn't so bad so far

akm, Tuesday, 15 July 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

I'm a pretty big fan, but the discussion in this thread had made feel very "meh" towards the whole thing.

austinato (Austin), Tuesday, 15 July 2014 22:57 (nine years ago) link

I hated Years of Refusal, by the way.

I have a friend who is an amazing guitarist in a kind of Johnny Marr style. He doesn't do anything in music any more - he just works for London Underground and then goes home and writes guitar songs that sound like That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore or Boy With A Thorn In His Side but even better, really fucked-up chord changes and weird string bends and heartbreaking arpeggios and stuff, and pretty much no one except me even gets to hear it. I have this long-term plan to hook him up with Morrissey - who'd get his best-ever solo record out of this stuff, no question - but I dunno how to arrange it.

Tell Morrissey your friend is Mexican and had a pompadour.

better hurry up because I don't think Morrissey is going to be around for very many other solo albums

akm, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 04:50 (nine years ago) link

The one thing that annoys me is when he repeats a whole chunk of lyric immediately after the first time.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 06:57 (nine years ago) link

He's been doing that for the last 30 years.

mahb, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 07:12 (nine years ago) link

I know, and on things like "Rusholm Ruffians" it works, but this time around it sounds like stretching half a verse into one. Several times.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 July 2014 08:29 (nine years ago) link

I haven't listened to the whole thing yet but so far, it doesn't seem much better than the previous releases to me. his melodies and lyrics are so boring/bad most of the times nowadays. that said, I like "staircase". it's like he plays with a (boring) mariachi backing band !

I quite like Oboe and Istanbul so far and coudl see this growing on me - the production and arrangements seems a bit more adventurous than usual

There's a really great song on the deluxe edition of the album (on Spotify as well) called Art-Hounds that's as enjoyable as any of his 90s singles. Dunno why it's not on the album proper.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 17 July 2014 10:36 (nine years ago) link

Hmmm. Still too many ooh-hoo-hoos where lyrics should be. He rarely seems to get beyond an idea for a title and a first verse these days.

mahb, Thursday, 17 July 2014 13:26 (nine years ago) link

i'm not a man is awful. the lyrics are excruciating and there is no tune. the only interesting vocal part is ripped directly from a superior b-side of his called the public image. I think he could have replaced this with any of the bonus tracks and made a better album. the minute odd of silence fares well in comparison to the rest of the track.

OutdoorFish, Thursday, 17 July 2014 23:10 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I quite like the beginning until the drums start banging and then it just becomes ugly.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 18 July 2014 08:50 (nine years ago) link

the bass solo is fab

PaulTMA, Friday, 18 July 2014 11:49 (nine years ago) link

I think his voice sounds good on this album and music-wise this is alright, better than the last two, not as good as Quarry, maybe kind of like those weird post- Vauxhall albums I never got into. . . but it's awfully long, isn't it?

Feel like I'm missing something. That's an un-Morrisseyesque video ... and not in a good way.

What a compelling combination of cell phone video of a rehearsal and outtakes from the Blurred Lines video shoot.

I like it

he still releases singles from that album ?

Finally getting around to this album in preparation for his show in Durham, NC(!) on Monday. I like it! Pretty strong all the way through.

On this last listen I was especially impressed with "Istanbul", which has really effective lyrics that strike me as quite unlike anything else he's ever written.

JRN, Saturday, 13 June 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link

I think its his strongest for ooh.

Then again, he's like Weller in that I can be impressed by the album but end up not caring if I ever her it again.
