Is the Yes album any good

brimstead, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 04:35 (nine years ago) link

Raveonettes - Pe'ahi

Probably the most sloppy and exciting album they've ever made.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 July 2014 04:54 (nine years ago) link

The Yes album was okay for a single listen; don't think i would try it again.

Today's albums:

Sir Michael Rocks - Banco
The Kinks - Classics
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - Hypnotic Eye

Today's singles:

forks is not a jenny lewis fan?

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 04:44 (nine years ago) link

forks is not really a jenny lewis fan. I will add it to my overflow-end-of-year pile tho.

the hyperdub album was okay but i can only still be excited about the DJ Rashad and Terror Danjah tracks.
I don't want to hear ANY of those singles again.

Common, Raveonettes and Biffy Clyro landed behind Justin Bieber, Marsha Ambrosius, A-Wax and a mixed helping of singles from ILX's best of the summer and hip hop threads.

Did you ever figure our how to subscribe to my 2014 hip hop spotify playlist?

I see the '13 stuff but the '14 doesn't appear to be public? Wanna repost it here and I'll try again?
The '13 stuff has been real rewarding btw!

cool, thanks; i'm in on both!

too... much... music...

I trust the "+" are the tracks you like best?

Yah me and another dude mostly. But anyone can add to it. Not comprehensive still going through albums to throw gems in there.

Here's an early-stage experimental thing I'm working on to automatically cluster the week's new Spotify releases by genre. (And to actually list them all...)

http://everynoise.com/spotify_new_releases.html

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 13:12 (nine years ago) link

Cool, that looks like it has a lot of potential. What do the numbers beside the release names mean?

dem bow dem bow need calcium (seandalai), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:01 (nine years ago) link

The numbers are track-counts. Things our database thinks are "albums" are italicized, things we think are "singles" have their titles shown in quotes. But this can be fuzzy, so the track counts sometimes help clarify things.

If you hover over a thing you can also see the artist's popularity rank (which is also the sort key both within clusters and in the full list on the right).

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

that could be immensely helpful.

why aren't all the weeks new releases in the official "this week's releases" playlist?

All the releases aren't in the official playlist because there are ~3000 of them every week, and a very large number of them are of interest to approximately nobody.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:34 (nine years ago) link

That's cool. What does the yellow text mean? And could the full list be in alphabetical (or some kind of) order?

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:49 (nine years ago) link

The full list is in descending artist-popularity order, so the idea is that at some point as you're going down it you can decide that you've hit your obscurity threshold.

The orange releases in the full list are the ones that my automatic categorizing didn't put into any of the clusters on the left.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 14:56 (nine years ago) link

i noticed you don't have

Les Ambassadeurs · Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako, Vol. 1 9
Les Ambassadeurs · Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako, Vol. 2 9

in a cluster - probably could go in the afrobeat · highlife · world ... cluster. not sure if that's helpful or not...

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 15:01 (nine years ago) link

also, how come some of the links don't work? is it bc some of the albums aren't available regionally?

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

All the releases aren't in the official playlist because there are ~3000 of them every week, and a very large number of them are of interest to approximately nobody.

so this stuff is being added to the equivalent of a garbage pile and no one is being told it exists? that seems counterproductive?

Yeah, I have Les Ambassadeurs genre-classified properly, but the clustering works at a lower level than that, so it thinks they don't have quite enough in common with the other artists in that cluster. Computers!

I'm still trying to track down why some of the links don't work. See above note about "experimental".

And yes, one of the reasons I'm working on this is to figure out how we could do a better job of surfacing more new stuff. But still, look at some of the stuff at the bottom of that list...

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 15:31 (nine years ago) link

idk how feasible it is, but i'd love to be able to browse new releases by country

Mordy, Wednesday, 30 July 2014 15:32 (nine years ago) link

i would think regular curators would be able to make great hay with that "bottom of the list" stuff... i remember the site that played songs no one had ever played; a deep digital crate digging tab on the app or the official blog could turn out regular virals

Oh, and the story with the few where the links don't work is that those links ought to work soon. Everything on that list is slated for US availability, but in a few rare cases where we don't get stuff ahead of time, there can be a little lag before it actually becomes available to everybody.

The full list on the right is sorted by artist popularity. The clusters on the left are sorted within each one by artist popularity, and the clusters themselves are sorted by the popularity of the most popular artist in each.

The unclustered ones are in orange, so after you go through the clustered ones you can scan the orange ones on the right until they start looking stupid. That's the idea.

(There are many reasons why an artist wouldn't get clustered, including that I suppress clusters that would have only a very small number of artists unless at least one of them is at least vaguely remotely notable (according to our data).)

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 02:56 (nine years ago) link

glenn, how come older albums show up on the list? for example Majida El Roumi · Ebhath Aanni is from 1994. is it bc it's the first time on spotify, is it mislabeled, or is it a reissue or something?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 03:04 (nine years ago) link

(i should add, it's labeled as a 2014 release on the spotify app itself - only if you google it do you see it's really twenty years old.)

A hurried round up for the rest of April cos life and work has been getting in the way. April is the countryest month apparently.

LPs and EPs

My album of the month was probably Margo Price's Midwest Farmer's Daughter. I was going to say this is too good to languish on just the Rolling Country thread but it seems to be getting plenty of traction anyway now.

Whoever had the idea of putting Iron & Wine and Jesca Hoop together has my undying gratitude. Love Letter For Fire is fire. And lovely.

By way of complete contrast, Japan's pop princess Kyary Pamyu Pamyu returns with a fantastic new EP and a typically extraordinary video for lead track Sai & Co. I'm impressed too that each track on the EP seems to be in a different language, judging just by the titles.

FiFi Rong started following me on Twitter ages ago. When she released the Forbidden Desire EP the other day, I thought I'd better finally check out her music. Glad I did; the slinky opener (and title cut) is one of the best pop songs of the year.

Still sore that PJ Harvey's album sucks? Scratch the itch with Cate le Bon's great new opus, Crab Day; love the stark arrangements on this. In a vaguely similar vein, Bristol's She Makes War, who I've mentioned before on this thread, now has a full album of her bruised confessionals to share.

Eastern European speed brass exponents Fanfare Ciocarlia return, but having conquered Earth are now bound for Mars.

Bronzerat Records offshoot imprint 'Series Aphonos' is dedicated to fake library music and soundtracks to non-existent films. This year's release, The Still allegedly features Chris Abrahams of The Necks. You can read more lies about the record here.

Tracks
Side 2 of Brian Eno's 'The Ship' is now finally on Spotify. "Fickle Sun" comes in three sections, and all are great. Here's part (i), here's (ii) The Hour Is Thin, and here's (iii) I'm Set Free.

If Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is the princess, then Perfume are the queens. The high points of their varied Cosmic Explorer LP are very high indeed. "Next Stage With You" is perhaps my favourite track.

Ellen Allien's new single is in a more "bangin' techno" vein than many of her releases of late. "Off" has the better beat, but the sampled vocals are slightly annoying, so I marginally prefer "Hoo".

Welcome back Ke$ha, even if that means having to play second fiddle to Zedd in terms of track credits.
Meanwhile, Sturgill Simpson welcomes his son to Earth with an epic opener to his latest LP.
Here's another album trailer from Brandy Clark. Calling it now: it's gonna be a classic…
… and this is the best so far of the songs that Laura Mvula has put her name to in 2016.
Dawn Richard is keeping things Honest
…but Ane Brun knows that when her lover Swears That He Is Made of Truth, she knows he lies. An achingly beautiful take on Sonnet 138.

Glen, any idea what's up with the disappearing notifications feature which let you know about new releases from followed artists? This is pretty much the most critical feature for me, and frankly I'm kind of baffled they would just up and kill it. Please let me know it's coming back better than ever.

westofrome, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 13:13 (seven years ago) link

I know there are technical issues, but I don't know what the resolution will be.

But if you go to Account, then Notification Settings, you can set those particular notifications to go to Email, instead of or in addition to "Push". This kind of makes more sense, and will make sure you don't miss a new-release notification due to other things piling up.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 15:55 (seven years ago) link

Weirdly, notifications has been intermittently telling me things in last two weeks, mostly about Prins Thomas records that were already on Spotify, but the odd new thing too.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 13 May 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

Weeks ending 6th and 13th May. Still no Lemonade. No Coloring Book yet either. On the plus side, we've been spared most of A Moon Shaped Pool.

Taking full advantage (or, by default if you prefer), the second most enjoyable album of last week was Jean-Michel Jarre's Electronica 2 - The Heart of Noise. Pretty much everything that didn't work about last year's Electronica 1 is put right here, thanks to a more interesting list of collaborators who, while never straying far from their comfort zone, certainly make Jarre work hard outside of his.

He'll never be fun, though. For smiles, you need Glasgow's Sithu Aye. As his bandcamp page states: "my name is Sithu and I record happy proggressive metal tunes for the discerning listener". Any album entitled "Set Course for Andromeda!!" is going to pique my interest, but this manages to sustain it despite its too long running time (75 mins!). Thanks to glenn for tipping me off to this guy by putting this on his list.

This week, Corinne Bailey Rae was always likely to be top of the heap, cf. posts passim. But the album,The Heart Speaks In Whispers fully earns its place thanks to excellent sequencing: strong statements of intent upfront, a quartet of KING co-writes in the middle to keep you interested, and a final section packed with sheer loveliness. Not enough people are talking about the record on this thread.

The latest from vapourware outfit death's dynamic shroud.wmv Classroom Sextape is less busy than its bandcamp only predecessor I'll Try Living Like This and is reminiscent of The Field in its use of samples. One of these days, someone's going to create wholly original pop songs using these techniques. This'll do until then.

Tracks
May has so far mostly been about football-related songs and songs for movie soundtracks. Of the latter, you know about Eurovision-bothering Justin and Angry Bird-bothering Charli XCX already, but don't overlook Red Velvet's super cute effort. Of the latter, Super Furry Animals easily outsmart the Manics by exhuming Bing Bong from the archives and promoting it as a Euro 2016 song.

No one seems to be talking about the new song from Alicia Keys, which is odd as In Common has, um, plenty in common with this board's interests. Reminds me of Dawn Richard a little - who's also had a busy month so far: an EP, a single and a feature spot on this great posse cut by DJ Carisma.

The new Death Grips album is pretty good, but I kinda wish all the songs featured the girl on Giving Bad People Good Ideas.

Solarstone return and is keen to take us back to Y2K. I'm in.

I've not heard the combo of female vocalist + 100% electronica backing for what seems like quite a while now. So the new record from Ella On The Run stands out from the pack. I particularly like Too Much Heaven and there's also an interesting Ace Of Base cover straight after this one on the EP.

Finally, onwards and upwards for L.E.G. - a single edit of Eat Shiitake Mushrooms is now on Spotify; it's OK but I recommend sticking to the long version. More importantly, we have another track from the album in the form of Rapunzel and a full-page OTT review of said album by Simon Reynolds in The Wire, no less. June 17th can't come fast enough.

Gemma Ray's The Exodus Suite - the first to put the twang and shimmer of her Harmony Rocket guitar centre stage since her brilliant covers album It's A Shame About…, servicing a collection of beautiful, semi-political torch songs.

Ariana Grande finally gets everything right on Dangerous Woman. You find yourself thinking "YESSSSSSS" on up to half a dozen cuts. Even Lil Wayne and Future manage not to ruin things. Pop album of the year so far?

Honourable mentions go to tracks by T.I. & Marsha Ambrosius, Floating Points, Roisin Murphy and Hypnolove.

Anybody know how that happened? Did Orbison's estate finally relent or what?

Here's a great playlist of songs that are disproportionally popular with groups of young females who use Spotify. I'm kind of bummed that Tidal doesn't have stuff like this.

I assume that playlist is for Glenn's own personal use and not for Spotify research purposes.

As I recall, glenn hates Roxette, so glad to see that Particles doesn't reflect personal taste. Moderately interesting article in Salon about algorithms, which probably doesn't hold up to scrutiny (it strikes me as kind of half-assed and quickly written): http://www.salon.com/2016/06/10/spotify_is_making_you_boring_when_algorithms_shape_music_taste_human_curiosity_loses/.

Is there anywhere that lists all new additions to Spotify as they go up? The New Releases and Release Radar are far from comprehensive.

IDK if this is "new" or not but there are a bunch of good Soul Jazz Records comps up now--nowhere close to the full catalogue but enough good stuff that I want to just hole up with my headphones and do nothing for a while.

Particularly enjoying Dancehall and Venezuela 70. Note that not all of them come up under the "artist" name "Soul Jazz Records Presents," you just have to do a search for "soul jazz" and then "see all albums."

Also try this in the search bar:

label:"soul jazz"

Much more than the last time I ran that!

I noticed the History Of Our World: Breakbeat & Jungle mix by DJ DB appeared recently (or has it been on for ages?). Shame it's not some kind of deluxe edition with all tracks also available unmixed but hey.
