well, drake obviously

k3vin k., Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

feel like Drake may skew the results, kind of a mistake including him.

should have voted for him tbh

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:57 (nine years ago) link

Voted for Drake.

nothing about Drake is defensible

stacked as fuck & imposing (DJP), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

J Cole is a traditionally skilled rapper and a great diary writer. His kind of middlebrow presence and softserve beats really keep him from connecting with the "cool kid" demo, which is a shame

bozack horseman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 17:10 (nine years ago) link

Also Mac Miller was barrrrrffffff when he was ayy solo cup fitted hat 2 da back but his new mixtape is like astro travelin white black elvis or somethin

bozack horseman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

Drake is a perfectly fine pop star with his moments of genius and rmde

the other seven get the full gas face

bozack horseman (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 17:15 (nine years ago) link

voting j cole, he has a few great songs even if he is a clown otherwise

dyl, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

voted for OJ

I don't mind drake, he consistently brings the lols

brimstead, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:16 (nine years ago) link

nothing about Drake is defensible

this

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:19 (nine years ago) link

yeah i mean i'm lower on drake than the majority of ilx, but look at the rest of this list

k3vin k., Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

that makonnen song reaaaaaaaaaaaaally sucks

'make the trap say aye' is a bona fide classic and gave us 'stupid fruity crazy swag' so idk what the fuck oj is doing on this list

out here like a flopson (tpp), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

drake by a country mile

╲╱\/╲/\╱╲╱\/\ (gr8080), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:24 (nine years ago) link

drake is easily my fav artist on this list but i'm gonna vote cole too, pretty reliably good singles artist

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:26 (nine years ago) link

i could prob try and defend riff raff but he doesn't deserve it

out here like a flopson (tpp), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

Seconding the J. Cole appreciation. Born Sinner is a good album: beautiful production; interesting guest features; a couple of killer singles. It's a nice listen all around

Evan R, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 18:46 (nine years ago) link

j cole is still way too overly serious and both lyrically and production wise and i don't think i'll ever want to listen to one of his albums because of that but born sinner was definitely "good" if you're into that kind of thing

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

Drake > Riff Raff > OJ Da Juiceman > JCole > Mac Miller > Wale > Travis Scott > Kitty Pryde > Kid Cudi

I used to be #1 Drake hater but I've kind of been softening on him lately tbh. Kid Cudi's last place comes with the caveat that "Day n Night" is a classic, which is more than most of the people on this list will ever come up with, but then there's the rest of his music lol. I have no idea who Makonnen is.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 19:49 (nine years ago) link

Loving Riff Raff lately

'arry Goldman (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

Voted for Riff Raff. Don't know if I could sit through a full mixtape, but you know, "versace lasagna."

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 20:25 (nine years ago) link

well i know whiney hates him & although he's def a fruity swag artist i wanted the list to have ~balance~

he def also reached caricaturish self parody at one point

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 20:35 (nine years ago) link

i think kid cudi is terrible but putting him below kitty pryde is just cruel

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 20:35 (nine years ago) link

I love all of them except Travy $cött and Cuddy the Kid. Those guys are no fun.

longneck, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 20:37 (nine years ago) link

I've read all the reasons why I'm supposed to hate Wale but tbf he's never bugged me that bad.

I've heard Mac Miller is better now like Whiney is saying but idk don't feel like I need to find out.

FKATlovestoFU better (Spottie), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 22:18 (nine years ago) link

Wale is such a cypher he's hard to get truly up in arms about

deej rides for that one CG song.

FKATlovestoFU better (Spottie), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:12 (nine years ago) link

ooh i forgot childish, he def should have been on here

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:30 (nine years ago) link

you should've probably put iggy on as well

didn't know oj da juiceman was especially derided, he's an untalented hypeman but not outright terrible enough to deride surely?

rev is right that kid cudi has made the best song of all of these guys (crookers remix) (lol @ the idea it invented edm). j cole has also made a couple of good singles and probably averages out at boringly tolerable? wale doesn't have enough character to be irritating. mac miller and riff raff have no profile here so i'm happily ignorant. that makonnen single is awful but is he really going to be a thing? drake is obviously the worst of them all. bad rappers can make hot singles (even tyga! even iggy!) but drake is always going to be hobbled by being drake

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:38 (nine years ago) link

"3005" is a good radio jam even if it's kinda first verse Big Sean, second verse Chance

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:38 (nine years ago) link

big sean is another who should be on this list

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:40 (nine years ago) link

his punchlines on it are super cringeworthy

i do like the chorus

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:41 (nine years ago) link

yes we can redo the poll i think too many good ones are missing

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:41 (nine years ago) link

deej you should've consulted lex

i would've voted big sean, i basically kind of love him now

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:41 (nine years ago) link

Medium Sean is another one I've softened on. He's cool as long as he's owning his goofballness.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:43 (nine years ago) link

yeah he can actually be ok in guest verse doses especially

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:52 (nine years ago) link

his verse on "all me" is incredible imo and his "mercy" verse eventually moved from funny and dumb in a bad way for me to funny and dumb in a good way

"guap" is also one of my fav rap songs of the decade and "my last" is an underrated & great party/radio jam

he's got the least memorable verse on "clique" but does hook duty so that counts for something

"beware" is also decent and he has provided multiple platforms to nicki minaj so that she can objectify his dick

also he's kinda fine \(o_O)/

it seemed to me you were questioning why i would review his album? i listened to it & gave it a score based on how good i thought it was? what does that have to do w/ gucci being in jail? he released a solid if unexceptional rap record, he was a buzzed artist & i reviewed it with a cynical eye

going to redo this thread but i'm keeping in makonnen and oj; i hate the former, whiney hates the latter, both are 'hateable' to a segment of goons

i'm also adding:

childish gambino
big sean

anyone else? I know Lex hates Ross but that's not happening. Charles Hamilton? Or is he too negligible to include. Iggy Azalea? I guess I should include her.
