this new tune is probably not even good enough to merit the thread title, but I am so pleased to have the veronicas back! remember how good "4eva" and "untouched" were?? this is a bit delta meets "jar of hearts" which as a look for them is a bit idk, but hey, they really really really really liked black swan, and so did I!

this song is p good, feels a lil sketchy/unformed; also feel like it could be remixed vv well

"untouched" is prob the best song ever recorded

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 21 September 2014 17:08 (nine years ago) link

splice together parts of their first two albums and you'd end up with one of the best pop records of the century.

tho i'm still mad one of them publicly talked shit about kesha when she wrote one of their best songs

They actually released a sort of comeback single in 2012 - "Lolita", meant to lead an album they ditched. But even at that point it'd been ages since their last release -- I was such a huge fan after those two albums --- Untouched was a US and actual global hit, threatened to make them world super stars, and they answered that call by doing fuck all for years. Sure they've had label issues but before that they seemed to be just lounging about with shitty bands they knew and with no wish to make any more music. Wasted potential of the highest order. Maybe it's just an unfair gut feeling or because I've followed their boring twitter account for years, but it seems like they lost any artistic vision and became much less interesting as artists.

Man, Hook Me Up, though. What a raw album, hardcore pop, every song basically ended with them screaming out the lyrics and throwing every sort of frenzied synth riff at it. This new song does not excite me.

"splice together parts of their first two albums and you'd end up with one of the best pop records of the century."

Gave it a shot:

1. 4Ever
2. Untouched
3. Take Me on the Floor
4. Everything I'm Not
5. Revolution
6. This Love
7. When It All Falls Apart
8. Hook Me Up
9. All I Have
10. Leave Me Alone
11. Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were)
12. Mouth Shut
13. Someone Wake Me Up
14. Mother Mother

"Hook Me Up" has aged better than "Secret Life Of..." so far ("Secret Life" was a little embarrassing even in 2006 IIRC), but both are pretty great.

Album is (has been?) on Spotify so just getting around to listening to it now, and it's really good. Interesting (weird) combo of the first two albums with a few weird touches -- the opening track is basically the Veronicas auditioning for the new "True Detective" theme song, e.g. -- and a bit of maudlin crud. Should be a talking point in the Charli XCX thread, right? My guess is that Charli was a Veronicas fan (she copied "Revolution" pretty shamelessly on her own alb).

People talk about turning shit up to 11 but in the chorus to

"Revenge is Sweeter (Than you ever were)"

It really happens. Everything else is an exaggeration and hyperbole

jesus christ! can I shoot the music these women have made into my veins? I would say where has this been all my life, but listening to the quobuz singles and key tracks playlist, I'm fairly sure I heard one of the singles somewhere… is that they are avril/britney level famous in Australia and are cultish elsewhere?

veronica moser, Friday, 6 January 2023 16:27 (one year ago) link

“4ever” and “Untouched” were their two main international hits. guessing you may have heard “Untouched” (the biggest of the two by far). I know that one is etched in my brain for life - and that’s a very good thing!

they did have a few more hits in aus but it's only really "untouched" and "4ever" that were inescapable here, wouldn't say they were quite avril/britney-level famous

Later songs “in my blood” and “if you love someone” seemed to get a lot of gym replay, I assume for payola reasons (gyms also being the only places I ever hear olly murs in the wild)

I previewed their Columbus Oh show in '09:

Right now, at 22, The Veronicas are twins Jess and Lisa Origliasso, who long ago conquered Australia, and whose international campaign may vault them over Mary-Kate and Ashley in one respect: The Veronicas loudly, musically celebrate themselves. Their pop-blog-rock has grown into darker dance drama. Of course they must quest, must pay youth’s dewy dues: “Right now, nothing makes sense but you/I feel so untouched, right now.” But The Veronicas remain a double vision of love.

Mary-Kate and Ashley? Wasn't their peak more turn-of-the century? Oh well, safe bet that the Vs could hop over them geezers later, or so it seemed, I guess---anyway! They had the records!

I heard today at a club Metro Station’s “shake it” followed by “untoched” and I noticed how horrible the mixing for both is. The beat sounds tiny, like recorded to be played on smartphones, both great pop songs of the era (specially the latter) but soured imho by how “sharp” they sound. The late 00’s might be my least favorite era production-wise.
