i've sent Weingarten into a denial spiral of shame and anger. You're gonna regret how this came across in the morning Weingarten.

Read it and weep, turds!

"Poptimism wants to be in touch with the taste of average music fans, to speak to the rush that comes from hearing a great single on the radio, or YouTube, and to value it no differently from a song with more “serious” artistic intent. It’s a laudable goal, emerging in part from the identity politics of the 1990s "

:)

"Contemporary music criticism is a minefield rife with nasty, ad hominem attacks, and the most popular target, in recent years, has been those professing inadequate fealty to pop.

Poptimism is a studied reaction to the musical past. It is, to paraphrase a summary offered by Kelefa Sanneh some years ago in The New York Times in an article on the perils of “rockism”: disco, not punk; pop, not rock; synthesizers, not guitars; the music video, not the live show. It is to privilege the deliriously artificial over the artificially genuine. "

The Pernicious Rise of Poptimism

"Rosen is describing poptimism as a reaction to what I think of as “Rolling Stone disease,” whereby Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen were treated as geniuses and the likes of Marvin Gaye and Madonna as mere pop singers. Obviously there should be no test of race or gender in musical immortality. But now the reaction has swamped the initial problem and created a wildly distorted version of the music world in 2014, as reflected in the way it’s covered.

Poptimism now not only demands devotion to pop idols; it has instigated an increasingly shrill shouting match with those who might not be equally enamored of pop music. Disliking Taylor Swift or Beyoncé is not just to proffer a musical opinion, but to reveal potential proof of bias."

Bolded text links into my reasons why the poptimism reaction has swamped the initial problem that is related to corporate control x internet advertising.

I think there's something to the theory that music-obsessed consumers, by and large, are less ashamed of their pop-music leanings. Albums/songs that 15 years ago would be labeled guilty pleasures are now relegated without that "guilty" association. I feel that may just be me getting old with not feeling guilty at all but what I listen to/like. But then again, maybe today's youth still live by those distinctions.

And I may be wrong, as my view of pop-music happenings is greatly distorted by ILM, but don't millennial music lovers as a group share a lack of cynicism when it comes to corporate-backed pop music? This observation is purely anecdotal, but I remember back in my youth really caring how "authentic" my favorite bands came off in the music press, embarrassingly. And the very notion of licencing a song off of an album by a alternative band was an act of career suicide. That sure doesn't seem to be the case anymore (thankfully). I feel like if there actually was a time in the last decade where pop music became "cool" to like, it may coincide with peoples' general acceptance of "in-authenticity".

Please don't ban me.
