their first LP in 8 years (!). first single "Lampshades on Fire" is pretty alright: http://www.thecurrent.org/feature/2014/12/14/modest-mouse-lampshades-on-fire-song-premiere

does ilm still hate modest mouse?

Album title makes you think, you know?

Evan, Monday, 15 December 2014 20:28 (nine years ago) link

Woah. I think I might be the other ILXor that digs the Mouse. I actually sold off We Were Dead before a big move a couple years back, the double vinyl was kind of bulky for something I hadn't really pulled out in a few years. Such a move would have been unthinkable to me a decade ago.

New song seems OK, very much like a Good News album track, down to the ba-ba-ba stuff. Not blown away, but reserving judgement.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 15 December 2014 21:05 (nine years ago) link

it has been eight years, wow. looking forward to hearing this.

Bookmarking this thread for when the album is released. Huge fan! I actually think their 2007 album was one of their best.

it's unlistenable

Yeah, er. I can't tell if my tastes have just shifted a lot, or if this was a band that made sense to me at a certain moment and not anymore or what. It's a weird feeling. I totally got into Good News and into large chunks of We Were Dead, and this basically sounds like those records but it's not interesting or compelling to me. Weird that that would be the sound they would settle into, really. I'm not gonna write it off just yet but I would like to like this more than I do.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 05:33 (nine years ago) link

I do like "Coyotes" but the video might be doing the heavy lifting on that one

Simon H., Wednesday, 4 February 2015 06:26 (nine years ago) link

i saw these guys at atp circa 'good news for people who love bad' i think, when they'd really taken off as a pitchfork favourite in the US, i think, but at the time that demographic didn't automatically port over to british indie kids, and so they were high on the bill and no one really gave a shit, and the frontman was complaining and threatening to stop playing, and someone at the back heckled with

RUBBISH!

RUBBISH!

RUBBISH MOUSE!

good news was their crossover, "float on" was a huge hit on radio & MTV

Peak Pitchfork Mouse was Moon & Antarctica. I think they did a lot for that record - or maybe it was right at that moment (alongside Kid A, Sophtware Slump, some other big indie things of '00) where Pitchfork was just getting big enough to be able to make even a small difference for a record, and have that in turn enhance the mag's own perceived relevance.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 06:52 (nine years ago) link

"Lampshades" reminds me a lot of the last Cake single "Sick of You" which was essentially just an amalgam of previous Cake singles. Everything in this song seems directly lifted off one of their past songs, particularly the stuff on Good News. Not just getting down on new Mouse singles - I liked "Dashboard" and "Satellite Skin" quite a bit

i was there too and some of the ~bad vibes~ were def down to people who thought that good news... was a sellout move.

which is not to detract from the noble sentiment of 'rubbish mouse'

I'm not understanding the brilliance of 'rubbish mouse'

xp - maybe something is lost in translation because i also don't really see what makes it such a sick burn though perhaps burn standards require some kind of metric conversion of which i am unaware

I think the key to understanding how funny it is is to realize that the guy shouting it thinks it's really funny.

#12 sounds like its from a fake MM tracklisting. Kind of the penultimate Mouse songtitle.

04 Pistol (A. Cunanan, Miami, FL. 1996)

just googled this name cuz it sounded familiar and UGH

da croupier, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 21:26 (nine years ago) link

held out hopes the single was chosen by the label for being the most generically modest mouse track but coyotes a snore and now we've got some "hey man nice shot" shit to look forward to

da croupier, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 21:26 (nine years ago) link

I'd say 'The Best Room' is the penultimate Mouse songtitle

this is sounding pretty good so far - probably won't satisfy the LCW-or-bust crowd but I'm glad the songs are mostly short and focused. I'm not sure how much the off-balance guitar lines or noisey bits fit the band anymore but I do enjoy the callbacks to the MM of the past, can't believe I've been listening to this band for 15 years now

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link

this is such a strange album. the title track is beautiful and sad. lampshades and shit in yr cut bore me. pistol is weird and cool, god is an indian and you're an asshole is a sweet callback/sequel to wild pack of family dogs. i think the biggest thing holding MM back these days is that Isaac Brock has nothing left to say.

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 10 March 2015 19:39 (nine years ago) link

i've turned around on "lampshades on fire" - or maybe the other tracks i've heard bored me enough that it's now a welcome imitation of themselves in pop mode

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 19:52 (nine years ago) link

Haha I caught "Lampshades on Fire" on the radio last night and I spent about 30 seconds thinking, "why are they playing an old single when they have a new one out?". Took me that long to realize it WAS the new single.

I really like "The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box", I'm cautiously optimistic about the whole record.
