L'ho beccata in discoteca con lo sguardo da serpente: The ILM ITALO Poll (Voting Thread)

Message Bookmarked

Let's keep this simple...

1) Pick up to twenty tracks from the nominations list.
2) Order them top to bottom (highest to lowest ranked; no numbers).
3) Send your ballot to totalpop (AT) gmail dot com.

Scoring will be as follows: 1:40, 2:39, …, 20:21.

Deadline is when the year 2014 ends everywhere in the world (i.e. December 31st, 23:59).

The nominations list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_5DqljJtLlYieT_hntAFl6b1xJ8dRJHlh7NAWbAR4SI/edit?usp=sharing

Please fill your ballot by copying and pasting from the nominations list without changing anything. There may still be errors and/or omissions in the list. Please let me know if you spot any.

This is also a campaigning thread but please no embedded youtubes.

That is all. :)

When this is over would anyone be interested in joining me on another thread of great tracks which weren’t nominated? Been thinking of a few tonight.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:36 (nine years ago) link

Thanks for compiling that, Grady! Thoug I noticed the video you put on the list of "Automat" by Automat has only the first part of the tune. I meant to nominate the full 3-part, 16 minute track. Here's a Youtube link for the full version:

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 21:51 (nine years ago) link

I'm really torn by the process of deciding what is and isn't Italo here I must admit. Like 'stop bajon' is one of my favourite tracks ever but I can't vote for it in this poll but on the other hand I have Boytronic 'Bryllyant' and Gino Soccio 'remember' in my final 20 atm when both are p ropey by definition.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 01:20 (nine years ago) link

Stop Bajon has too many real musical instruments

There's enough gold in the nom list for me to be brutally conservative with my ballot

brimstead, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 01:29 (nine years ago) link

That's the way I'm leaning.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 01:32 (nine years ago) link

I would Chewshabadoo. Maybe we could just use the other (nomination) thread?

Yeah, there is way too much amazing stuff to choose from with all the nominations!

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 01:37 (nine years ago) link

-I can't believe I forgot to nominate "Give me the night" by Facts & Fiction. Much more deserving than, say, "Ruff Mix" by Wonder Dog...

-Here's a "live" video of "Disco King" by Carrara. Very convincing sax solo at 2:30, followed by a sax toss to the wings... http://youtu.be/eRLOtavjM7s

-"Lady Fantasy" seems to be the most popular track by Max Him, but I like "Melanie" much better. Vocals are so... emphatic. Awesome scream at 4:10.

-Den Harrow - "To Meet Me" is better than his more popular tracks IMO, and the lyrics are hilariously baffling ("I have a tweedy suit and pointy shoes / my hat is not on straight / oh baby nothing to do"; "Inside my pants today there beats a heart"). The way he moves and bares his teeth in this live video of "A Taste of Love"... Oh my god... http://youtu.be/hSIjuUONwTE. After a few singles they changed the singer behind the scenes... "Future Brain", the other nominated track, is a lot weaker.

-Thanks for compiling the youtube list!

"Ruff Mix" by Wonder Dog...

my other new favorite discovery!

Thanks for putting those playlists together, gr8080!

daavid, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:44 (nine years ago) link

Re: "Ruff Mix":

I've known this track for a few years. What I didn't know until today is that a young Simon Cowell dressed up as Wonder Dog to promote the single in the UK (see http://youtu.be/iw0yfiRz9zY)

making my way through the playlist, slowly. keep campaigning! i love most of the songs people have repped for in this thread, including wonder dog.

let me give a push to a few personal favs:

silver pozzoli - around my dream - is pretty perfect, and would be my pick for a song with which to introduce someone to italo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62gvnYqjPDw

pino d'angio - ma quale idea (the eponymous thread track) - is such a nice combination of sleazy, sly, and smooth. love it a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHLewcdIWlw

hipnosis - pulstar - lacks the cheese appeal that i enjoy in italo. it's actually downright classy, imo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsFEIPvHkTo

fennel cartwright, Thursday, 18 December 2014 05:57 (nine years ago) link

ugh, sorry for the embeds. i hate them too, but haven't posted here in a while so i forgot how these things work.

fennel cartwright, Thursday, 18 December 2014 05:58 (nine years ago) link

Here's hoping the presence of two "Self Control"s (Raf & Laura Branigan) won't split the votes to badly for this amazing song. The Branigan is okay but the original is just astoundingly good. How surprising it was to hear it for the first time... It's a great track on its own, but the weird touches in it work so well too: the way the female vocals take over briefly; just as it seems to be coming to an end, the bass guitar takes over and it seems to morph into a different song; then one rapper comes in, I hadn't expected that; then a second, another surprise. But it all fits together perfectly.

I suspect this track doesn't need much campaigning to place well, though.

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Thursday, 18 December 2014 09:30 (nine years ago) link

Had always thought I preferred the more strident Laura Branigan version but am coming around to the RAF version after choosing to get behind it in this. Hoping everyone who votes for the song votes for RAF.

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 18 December 2014 13:06 (nine years ago) link

I voted for the Laura Branigan version; her "Self-Control" has a huge sentimental value for me, being a favourite of my teenage years. Also, the RAF guys is not a very good singer and has a rather bland voice, which you could never say about Branigan. Maybe the arrangement is more interesting in that version, but I'd say Branigan's performance makes her version better.

Tuomas, Thursday, 18 December 2014 13:51 (nine years ago) link

I dunno I think the bottom line is we should get behind the Italian original rather than the non - Italian cover.

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 18 December 2014 14:33 (nine years ago) link

another longshot i'm gonna rep for:

Rinder & Lewis - Willie And The Hand Jive

http://youtu.be/A9oTAzmHSWs

dudes probably never set foot anywhere near Italy but that bass/synth/choir recipe cooks up one spicy meat-a-ball imo

gr8080, Thursday, 18 December 2014 14:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm afraid I prefer the Branigan, too, and probably won't have room to vote for both. Nowhere near submitting my ballot yet, though, so you all have time to lobby at me.

skip, Thursday, 18 December 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

I love the Branigan more than life, it's a good song by itself but her vocals just ratchet it up to pure ecstasy. Especially when her voice sort of cracks as she sings "you take me self control", it sends shivers up my spine. RAF version is really good too, though, but not as powerful.

brimstead, Thursday, 18 December 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

Definitely want to campaign for Hugh Bullen's "Alisand," which has got an early Pet Shop Boys vibe in the verse (chugging keyboards/spoken word-ish rap), although the breezy high-pitched chorus is totally italo. Great punchy synth production too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKogFDC-Mk4

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:56 (nine years ago) link

If there's a groundswell of support for the Laura Branigan then who am I to piss in the wind. It's all time for me and I'd choose it over RAF to take to a desert island In a heartbeat. Just surprised so many would go for it over that in an Italo poll.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 19 December 2014 01:46 (nine years ago) link

I'd never seen the video for Fun Fun's "Happy Station" until just now. What the actual....? http://youtu.be/qM9y-eJJ8U4

mike t-diva, Friday, 19 December 2014 12:55 (nine years ago) link

I definitely get that the Branigan seems less "Italo" - that would probably be my only reason for taking Raf over it, and possibly reason enough. But everyone else seems fine w/ it being here, so...

emil.y, Friday, 19 December 2014 13:07 (nine years ago) link

I thought the definition of "Italo" was in this poll was based on sound, not geography, so I had no problem voting for Branigan. There were definitely things on the list that sound less Italo than her "Self Control".

TEAM RAF

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Saturday, 20 December 2014 00:14 (nine years ago) link

Voted! I stuck to a conservative definition of Italo, to the point of excluding what is by far my favourite song on the nominations list and one of my favourite songs of all time ("Speedy Like Gonzales"). Looking forward to the results now.

Oh, and everyone should vote for Livin' in your Love.

ticket to rmde (seandalai), Saturday, 20 December 2014 00:36 (nine years ago) link

Oh nononono, how could you not vote for 'Speedy'? Gah.

emil.y, Saturday, 20 December 2014 01:08 (nine years ago) link

Italo is a feeling.

Nethertheless, RAF

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 20 December 2014 12:18 (nine years ago) link

Oops, I thought it was 30, not 20. And I've only made it halfway through the youtube playlist, but maybe that's OK, as to cut it down to 20 I'll probably remove everything I hadn't heard before listening to the playlist...
