No individual thread, I think? Anyway, just announced her new album later this year, Abyss

new album is really good

not sure if I slept on her old stuff or if this is much more to my taste (wrt the psych doom guitars especially), or somewhere between those two possibilities

This is the best album ever

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 21:22 (eight years ago) link

I have seen some inklings of metal press on this album - Terrorizer gave it a good review and Lars Gotrich - who penned the article in the streaming link Ned posted above - is NPR's metal dude and he mentioned that those of us in league would enjoy it.

I think it's great! And metal... But sometimes my metal definition is more hyper-inclusive than might be helpful to others.

I'm hearing AR Kane and Heather Nova as much as I am Sunn O))) and Angel Olson in this. I love the way this album sounds so engulfingly massive but also so stark and isolated.

After one day listening to it it's already in consideration for my favourite of the year. It's like the Marriages album from a few months back but just a little bit more.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 13 September 2015 22:43 (eight years ago) link

First album Heather Nova I assume.

Chelsea Wolfe is one of the few artists who seems to get better with each album. "Abyss" is her masterwork - it may be heavier and more dense with sonic details than other releases, but she still retains her penchant of fluctuating from serene vocals to grief stricken screams . She doesn't forget what draws her fans to her work while still pushing her sound forward.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 August 2017 14:00 (six years ago) link

I really like the new album but I don't think it's as good as the last. It veers a little towards Evanescence territory.

boxedjoy, Friday, 25 August 2017 14:09 (six years ago) link

Abyss is hard to beat. I find it funny that people speculate that this will be her first straight doom metal album. She always has softer songs, she's not the type of artist to jump on one genre

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 26 August 2017 03:09 (six years ago) link

Yeah, straight doom metal this isn't. But it's not Evanescence either!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 26 August 2017 04:12 (six years ago) link

Don't really hear the Evanescence...

new album is really great, about as heavy as Abyss with seemingly less gentle moments but the electronics are integrated more seamlessly this time.

Chelsea's vocal hooks are really melodic on this too, she's truly one of the best and most consistent songwriters today.

Re: ZJ, just start with the current bassy Okovi or the early muddy EPs like Stridulum and Valusia. Consensus seems to be the Foetus arranged string Versions and the more poppy Taiga were missteps, with Okovi being a return to form.

New album, Birth of Violence, out in September. First single, 'The Mother Road', is already available on Spotify and Apple Music.

Looks like the emphasis will fall on dark folk. Those Jonny Greenwood-esque strings and the climactic outro are wonderful.

For some strange reason the reception to this very good album has been very low key and no buzz anywhere.

I can see why the more metal press aren't covering it as much but I thought the traditional media might have.

Did it get a pitchfork review?

Vote (with a bullet) (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 29 October 2019 22:54 (four years ago) link

The second half sags a wee bit and overall it's not as impressive as Hiss Spun (my favourite of her albums). None of which explains the neglect – there are some incredible songs in there, starting with the obvious singles ('The Mother Road' and 'Deranged for Rock & Roll'). I'm a fanboy so make of this what you will but it'll certainly make my EOY list.

I've been listening to Chelsea Wolfe a lot lately, particularly during my long covid-19 lockdown walks. I'm constantly floored by how simple her songs are - two or three common chords - and so beautiful. Great song writing.

I had no idea that she'd teamed up with Jess Gowrie (who played drums on Birth of Violence) to drop an album tomorrow under the guise of... Mrs. Piss. Looking forward to it:

pomenitul, Thursday, 28 May 2020 20:51 (three years ago) link

This is pretty great, unexpectedly Kim Gordon-esque here and there, sometimes more punkish than doomish, although the latter is unsurprisingly predominant. The industrial underpinnings are a nice touch and hearken back to Abyss. Gowrie's drumming is typically excellent. I just wish it were longer – it feels like an EP.

I'm not normally a huge fan of hers, but this is great! Reminds me a little of the first Savages, but a lot messier.

Not to my knowledge, no.

They were supposed to tour Australia and NZ together last year. Hopefully a sign of more things to come.

She's on the new Xiu Xiu as well (along with Haley Fohr, Liz Harris, Owen Pallet, Alice Bag).

Chelsea Wolfe helps Stewart turn The Cure’s “One Hundred Years,” a favorite of his since high school, into pulsating industrial music that radiates intensity.

the stuff from the new album giving me flashbacks to Lamb and Curve! in a good way. maybe i'm due for a 21st century trip hop phase. she really is perfect for someone who needs a more goth lana del rey in their life.

the ebm vibe is strong on the new stuff too. you could remix it all really well.

its of a piece with the tracks that have come out already. dark. clanking. beats. moody. industrial.

scott seward, Friday, 9 February 2024 19:04 (two months ago) link

I gave in and put it on, its sounding really great. Pretty much the album I was hoping for (and thankfully sounds nothing like Lamb - which had me worried)

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Saturday, 10 February 2024 00:48 (two months ago) link

sorry, i didn't mean to scare you. it was just reminding me of that era in some ways. i am actually not a Lamb expert. but i think they got doomy on occasion.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 February 2024 07:13 (two months ago) link

I think the fact you said it had that kinda doomy industrial meets curve vibe was enough to make me think nah it wont be like Lamb. Lamb were one of my pet hates along with Moloko that put me off the whole trip-hop thing back in the day.

It seems like a natural follow up/progression to her more doom records of a few years ago.
