2011 no question

everything 2009 and earlier is pretty good tho (tho i have no idea what "freak like me" is)

k3vin k., Friday, 23 January 2015 02:55 (nine years ago) link

2010 or 2008

diddybops 67 (120.2)(source field mix) (some dude), Friday, 23 January 2015 02:56 (nine years ago) link

when 'video games' hit #2 i realized i hadn't been paying attention to what people actually took seriously

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Friday, 23 January 2015 02:56 (nine years ago) link

like...we really didn't need "Paper Planes" to be #3 two years in a row

diddybops 67 (120.2)(source field mix) (some dude), Friday, 23 January 2015 02:57 (nine years ago) link

2006 for me I think, mostly due to the #1. I didn't know what "Weak Become Heroes" was, but Missy and Sugababes are enough to cancel it out.

Love all 3 songs from 2011.

bae sremmurd (monotony), Friday, 23 January 2015 02:57 (nine years ago) link

not a fan of 'crazy' at all either. was worried 'fuck you' would finish at the top its year too.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Friday, 23 January 2015 02:58 (nine years ago) link

"Fuck You" came in #11.

The Reverend, Friday, 23 January 2015 03:01 (nine years ago) link

"Crazy" is an undeniable tune/performance held down by lame production imo.

The Reverend, Friday, 23 January 2015 03:02 (nine years ago) link

This is between 2009 and 2002 for me. Going with the former bc I like "Work It" more than "Bad Romance".

yeah #2 and #3 in 2013 are good songs but they're a little high for what they are

k3vin k., Friday, 23 January 2015 03:10 (nine years ago) link

best one is 2012 imo. all 3 songs are still total classix

This is 2010 easily.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 03:33 (nine years ago) link

i cn see how u would say that but 'wut' & 'hard in the paint' hold up really extremely well imo

johnny crunch, Friday, 23 January 2015 03:44 (nine years ago) link

"hard in the paint" has aged terribly. nobody plays that song anymore, even to the same extent as "bmf."

diddybops 67 (120.2)(source field mix) (some dude), Friday, 23 January 2015 04:33 (nine years ago) link

2010 for top 3, 2014 for top 77.

2012 for me

daavid, Friday, 23 January 2015 05:08 (nine years ago) link

Best is 2005. I loved that year!

daavid, Friday, 23 January 2015 05:09 (nine years ago) link

2010 feels like the result of people trying to not be like Pazz and Jop or Pitchfork, but still failing because Ariel Pink managed to get in there. But on the plus side, at least Fuck You wasn't one of the top 3.

MarkoP, Friday, 23 January 2015 05:15 (nine years ago) link

i still love hard in da paint

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 23 January 2015 05:57 (nine years ago) link

2012 is so fuckin OTM, good job ILM. 2007 still pretty cool too. 2006 maybe the most blah, guess i'll vote for that; most of the others have like one horrible dud track that i hated at the time and still do, and then at least one awesome classic. generally y'all do pretty well, i don't vote in these things but they're a huge part of my catching-up music education every year.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:04 (nine years ago) link

2007: Umbrella / Atlas / Paper Planes
2006: Crazy / What You Know / My Love
2005: 1 Thing / Biology / Since U Been Gone
2004: Toxic / Yeah (LCD Soundsystem) / Galang

one of these

example (crüt), Friday, 23 January 2015 06:06 (nine years ago) link

I agree that having Battles come in at #2 is quite embarrassing.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:09 (nine years ago) link

2014: too soon to judge tbh, but i can't see any of these becoming 'embarassing' any time soon
2013: this is probably the worst. #beautiful though incredible is in retrospect kind of a minor work in the miguel oeuvre, and i maintain no one gets truly excited by get lucky. not a fan of paramore
2012: good year. still not crazy about norse but the other 2 are all-time. call me maybe still brings the house down at weddings
2011: three perfect songs that i still love and will always love
2010: damnnn 2010 was vintage, wut/hard in the paint is an amazing top 2. proud of us. apparently round & round is a selena gomez song. don't remember it
2009: i discovered ilx in '08 but this was the first year i followed the polls. tearing up just thinking about it
2008: complete vintage. three life-defining songs. i was a teenager in '08 so paper planes isn't as corny to me as it understandably is to some of you
2007-2002: i still love the music but we've talked big early '00s singles to death. no opinion but the answer is probably one of these

flopson, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:16 (nine years ago) link

Wait a second. Is Round & Round the Selena Gomez song or the Ariel Pink song?

MarkoP, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:22 (nine years ago) link

Ahh yes, I was right. It was Ariel Pink.

MarkoP, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:24 (nine years ago) link

no shit? i guess 2010 is just that much more vintage

flopson, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:25 (nine years ago) link

lots of shitting on dope songs in this thread

billstevejim, Friday, 23 January 2015 09:16 (nine years ago) link

2014: perfect balance between capturing 2014 in a wider sense and being idiosyncratically ilxy
2013: excuse you "#beautiful" is about mariah's oeuvre not miguel's. 2 out of 3 but those 2 really make up for #1
2012: "inspector norse" still feels like a weird #1 in that while lots of fun it's not peak terje or peak nu-disco but just the point when lots of people realised about him
2011: all killer no filler, tempered by the unfortunate way "212" and "video games" beat "super bass" and "countdown"
2010: pretty amazing top 2 regardless of how well either have aged. the selena gomez song at #3 is aight
2009: completely forgot "daniel" existed but as the weak links in 2-out-of-3 years go it's inoffensive enough
2008: peak bobbins ilx! bit embarrassing "paper planes" placed twice i'm glad we have a rule to preclude this now
2007: this battles song might be the worst ever top 3 placer (well it's that ariel pink song technically but i'm down for rewriting history to make it selena gomez)
2006: smdh at "crazy" beating the other two. this year and 2013 are identical in many ways
2005: girls aloud have like 10 singles better than "biology", never understood why it's become canonised
2004: one of the best ever, still holds up now, though "toxic" was far from the best britney single of this year
2002: the streets are v embarrassing but this is probably his least embarrassing moment and the other two are unimpeachable, smh at lack of familiarity with sugababes. not even in a "know ur pop history children" way but in a "know ur ilx history if ur here posting now"

prob gonna go with 07 for battles and the double "paper planes" though really the embarrassing "paper planes" placement was the following year hmmm

lex pretend, Friday, 23 January 2015 09:24 (nine years ago) link

i don't think that's a selena gomez song.

billstevejim, Friday, 23 January 2015 09:30 (nine years ago) link

billstevejim, Friday, 23 January 2015 09:30 (nine years ago) link

2014 is def the best one.

billstevejim, Friday, 23 January 2015 09:32 (nine years ago) link

bob seger's silver bullet gland (sic), Friday, 23 January 2015 09:37 (nine years ago) link

There was an embarrassing 2003 tracks poll but not sure how it compares to 02 and 04 for turnout and badness of points system:
i'd like to do a 'tunes of the year' poll now

Having said that even with 100+ ballots and the same points system as now the top 10 would probably have been much the same as it was

2012 I guess, though I still like 'Adorn'. Don't care for the other 2 songs at all. 2013 pretty meh as well.

Someone posted the full list of 2013 in the 2014 thread yesterday and I realised that a year removed I only still like 2 of the entire top 20.

Oh snap, I've never seen mention of this poll and wasn't able to find it even by looking up all threads with "2003" in the title. I'd always thought simply no one got it together to run a poll that year. Thanks!

Both these Girls Aloud songs way down otherwise awesome years.

Yeah it took me a while to dig it out last time (linked to it on another EOY ILM polls thread somewhere) and the 00-04 poll was the first to attempt the nominations-voting-slow rollout process now institutionalised.

seriously though, i could see the 2012 top 3 of "call me maybe", "adorn" and "inspector norse" being the 2010-2014 top 3. each one would have won in any other year and they're probably the consensus pop, r&b and dance tracks of the decade respectively.

prolego, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:13 (nine years ago) link

"Inspector Norse" being the consensus dance track of the past four years is an overwhelmingly depressing thing

EZ Snappin, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:19 (nine years ago) link

"Inspector norse" is the kind of track that polls much lower with distance and really, I hope, not the consensus dance track

lex pretend, Friday, 23 January 2015 22:20 (nine years ago) link

In some ways it would be fitting, as the last five years have felt like all of the "beige" music has bubbled to the top, ticking off enough boxes to cast a wide net of interest but being safe enough to not challenge anyone or push them out of a listening comfort zone.

2013: Get Lucky / #Beautiful / Still Into You
2011: 212 / Video Games / Super Bass
2010: Wut / Hard in da Paint / Round & Round
