Got a bad feeling about this.

Is this the one with Jeff Beck? Or Kacey Musgraves? He's been recording with so many people I have no idea what he's released.

xp: somehow I managed to pick two versions of those album covers without pmrc badges on them.

how's life, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 15:49 (nine years ago) link

alternate cover art: an elderly Brian Wilson is sitting on the beach with a margarita in hand, being fanned by two beautiful beach babes. nearby, five young men in green-and-white striped swim trunks are running down the pier, just about to jump in the water. the chubby one (representing a young Brian Wilson) is waving at the older Brian to join them, but the older Brian dismisses him with a smug grin and a flick of the wrist. No Pier Pressure.

guess jardine and blondie chaplin are in his band? that is cool. as much the beach boys as anything, really.

Mike Love got custody of Stamos--Brian gets him every other weekend when he's not on tour.

how good is brian wilson live these days, frankly? is it totally dependent on the surrounding band?

akm, Monday, 23 March 2015 23:23 (nine years ago) link

I'm listening to that song and cannot even connect the lead voice with Brian Wilson.

everything, Monday, 23 March 2015 23:49 (nine years ago) link

Think it's Blondie Chaplin, Al Jardine on the chorus, Brian on the 2nd verse.

isn't this basically a rewrite of 'They Don't Know About Us'?

The latter has been the case ever since he started touring; luckily, his band is incredible. There's a reason the 50th Anniversary Beach Boys tour was Mike adding two of his guys to about nine of Brian's.

one year passes...

Saw Brian last night on the Pet Sounds plus more tour. His vocals varied from not so good to mediocre to kinda good. But he looked mostly happy to be up there onstage. He was helped by the great band with Al Jardine's son Matthew doing lots of the high note singing. Plus Al was there and Blondie Chaplin and the rest of that fine band.

I see online that on this tour Brian says every night to the crowd, Did anyone come here for bad vibrations, really s--tty ones? No, We're gonna give you good ones"....

But I guess lots of musicians repeat the same patter every night on tour

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 12:56 (seven years ago) link

I saw him in Paris in the early 00s for the Pet Sounds tour (then again later for the Smile tour), iirc.
it wasn't very good and he was mostly a zombie (in pyjamas) but still I'm glad I saw him (which is not the case for other 60s legends like Macca, the Stones, etc who I don't really care seeing) !
As for musicians saying the same thing every night, I guess it's the only way to deal with the interactions with the crowd when you have very long tours...

I haven't listened to this album but I suppose it's bad (like all his other solo albums !). that said, I kinda liked the single from the latest BBoys album, surprisingly !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 13:11 (seven years ago) link

He varies from night to night. A few months ago, He was much more engaged and happier at Primavera than he was playing Glasgow the previous week.

Sweet Insanity is a better album than No Pier Pressure.

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 14:07 (seven years ago) link

really ? I've never heard about it !
I'll try to find it... but I suppose it suffers from the same main flaw as all his other output since his first solo album for me : terrible sound/production...

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link

Well, I'm not saying it's very good. It does have the very excellent Someone To Love on it.

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 15:24 (seven years ago) link

I should track that down, I've never bothered with it either

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 15:40 (seven years ago) link

He's been closing recent gigs with that 1988 solo song "Love and Mercy" and he seems really into it. I liked his rendition live last night, plus its references to seeing violence on tv makes it sadly relevant.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:37 (seven years ago) link

He was more zombie-like the first tie I saw in the 00s on a Smile tour. When he I saw him in New Orleans at Jazzfest a few years back during the brief period he was back with the Beach Boys, he often seemed like a bored sideman.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:40 (seven years ago) link

Love and Mercy also closed that biopic movie.

(also one of his best solo songs in general)

I kinda liked the single from the latest BBoys album, surprisingly !

that entire album was pretty decent, I thought. :)

have never figured out myself if this whole Brian on Tour forever thing, is doing him good, or bad. He certainly doesn't seem very happy, on the other hand, it might keep him goin' and enjoying himself MORE off stage.

Ludo, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:54 (seven years ago) link

I have no interest in seeing him live to be honest, he's a very damaged individual and performing live was never really his strong point even when his voice was excellent and he was at his peak, so why would he be any better at it now that his voice is gone and he's got decades of trauma and drug abuse under his belt.

I did like what I heard (surprisingly) off that last album.

Love and Mercy is great (the song, not the movie, which was only half great)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 17:57 (seven years ago) link

he loves performing and he loves his band. its good to see him in person. hes always been weird on stage.

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

oh and yah this album is shit.

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

When I saw him live on the Smile tour, he tried to exit off the wrong side of the stage at the end of the show.

funk79, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

"Love & Mercy" is a nice song but the production is atrocious with the all the 80s professional MOR sounds and effects.

that entire album was pretty decent, I thought. :)

hum. I'm not sure I have what it takes to listen to a whole contemporary beachboys album...

hum... it does seem interesting...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That's_Why_God_Made_the_Radio
I might give it a try.
also, eheh : "Others accredited the album's low points specifically to Mike Love's contributions"

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 22 September 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

"Brian, we've got Brad Paisley's guys to do your album cover."

otm in the rain (Eazy), Thursday, 22 September 2016 14:06 (seven years ago) link

I have listened to the praised final suite on the album.
it's nice but not that good (and certainly nothing he hasn't done better before).
"Summer's Gone" is a bit disappointing considering it was supposed to be their final track.
I'll give it another try but so far I prefer "Isn't It Time"...
as for the rest, I'll see if I can manage !

I wonder how much of this brian wrote on his own. the voice is certainly his.

seeing him next week doing pet sounds for the final time.

akm, Friday, 7 October 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

yeah it very much reads like how he talks. I assume a ton of editing was done to make it coherent/linear

Οὖτις, Friday, 7 October 2016 20:21 (seven years ago) link

is this the first time Brian admits the story that he freaked out on the plane in '64 in large part due to jealousy between Mike Love and Marilyn?

PappaWheelie V, Friday, 7 October 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

the way I read that was that that was the catalyst but not exactly the sole reason

Οὖτις, Friday, 7 October 2016 20:57 (seven years ago) link

yeah, i mean i've always read the 'jealousy' issue as rumor -- but Brian confirms that part. Not sure if I missed that, prior

PappaWheelie V, Friday, 7 October 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

being jealous of Mike Love is kind of unfathomable (Dennis, sure)

i'm jealous of Carl. Annie Hinsche was a hottie!

papa - i'd take this with a grain of salt as I mostly trust AGD and his timeline - but just a heads up a bunch of the fan community has "exposed" him lying about a ton of shit recently.
