The votes have been counted from the nominations thread: For Whom The Bell POLLS - Votes & Nominations Thread for the // METALLICA \ ILM Artist Poll (Voting Closed)

Now, it's time to see THE TOP 25 METALLICA SONGS as voted by 18 ILX users.

But first – we had two questions to answer. "If Metallica ever jumped the shark, when did it happen?" and the obligatory best Metallica album ever.

TOP ALBUMS:

Not every ballot had a top album. And my vote created a tie. The rest of the roll-out will be much more scientific.

surprised nobody picked "Fade To Black" as a jump the shark moment tbh

example (crüt), Monday, 6 July 2015 18:59 (eight years ago) link

I still remember hearing Sandman for the first time. Humble brag, but I've been a Metallica fan since the Summer of '86. We'd heard all the rumors and read RIP magazine that this new album was going to be different. Scared to death that they were going to turn into Winger.

Listened to the tape in the parking lot of the shopping center where I bought it. Buddy and I just looked at each other. "Not bad. At least it's not Winger."

Still get a kick out of it now that I only hear it occasionally. Even Tom Leykis couldn't ruin this song for me.

pplains, Monday, 6 July 2015 19:00 (eight years ago) link

Also enjoy this poll kicking off with it because it's a helluva album intro (James wanted "Holier Than Thou" to start the record.)

And as you can see, it was awarded exactly 100 points. All the other songs below it were in the double-digits.

pplains, Monday, 6 July 2015 19:02 (eight years ago) link

I remember hearing it for the first time at summer camp. We were all gathered around a boombox playing 98 Rock. To me, it was too corny to be Metallica. "What was this, the new Megadeth song or something?" And then weirdly, the new Megadeth song (from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) had a "Now I lay me down to sleep..." line in it.

I wish I could remember the grammatical term for swapping around the subject, metal style, to give you master of puppets vs. puppet master. Makes everything more metal. There's a baby store by here called Cradles of Distinction.

One of the Justice tracks I didn't end up voting for. I love it in context of the hour-long riff fest, but as a stand-alone song it plods a little for me.

Not giving too much away by saying this is the longest song on the poll.

pplains, Monday, 6 July 2015 19:38 (eight years ago) link

beyond reed's devastating vocal i think this song is the apex of "gentle" metallica, i.e. "unforgiven," "hero of the day" etc. they just find this gorgeous, simple phrase and wring the most pathos out of it. also love lars' changeable snare hits at the end of each measure

imo lars is often less a shitty drummer than just another guitar

Kind of randomly listened to "Damage Inc." after years of dismissing it, and I ended up including it on my ballot for that intro alone.

:wq (Leee), Monday, 6 July 2015 20:34 (eight years ago) link

just catching up now.

wow, those really are phenomenal graphics. truly, a work of art.

interesting to see Lightning blowing everything else out of the water. it's always been my sentimental favourite, but i tend to meet more Puppets worshipers.

eclectic results so far! the opening riff on Eye of the Beholder slays me every time, slow crescendo and all. Damage, Inc. is such a rush. maybe their heaviest song, pound for pound.

charlie h, Monday, 6 July 2015 20:36 (eight years ago) link

that live version of Damage Inc. is beastly

lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 6 July 2015 20:42 (eight years ago) link

It's one of those -you-had-to-be-there things, but one of my best segues back in college radio days was going from "Eiffel Tower High" by Hüsker Dü into "Damage Inc." - starting the latter about 40 seconds before the former had ended.

pplains, Monday, 6 July 2015 20:52 (eight years ago) link

Been scouring around for a copy of " ...And Justice for Jason," and so far ... no dice. It's on youtube, in pieces, and there is supposedly a version with his isolated Guitar Hero tracks mixed in, but it's been pretty well scrubbed from at least the first few layers of the internet.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 6 July 2015 20:53 (eight years ago) link

while we're celebrating Metallica, i was thinking about their more complicated/proggy tracks and how, even more than most metal bands, the writing seems really natural and unforced. maybe it's just because when i committed them to memory in middle school i didn't know how to break it down, but i never think about the time signatures when i listen to them. i'm pretty sure they don't either. they're just composed of little cells of riffage that can be expanded, contracted, rearranged, etc.

lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 6 July 2015 21:03 (eight years ago) link

Do they have stuff not in 4/4 or 3/4?

:wq (Leee), Monday, 6 July 2015 21:10 (eight years ago) link

while we're celebrating Metallica, i was thinking about their more complicated/proggy tracks and how, even more than most metal bands, the writing seems really natural and unforced

this is essentially the failure of death magnetic imo, songs that try to simulate their first four records but come off forced and unnatural

"sanitarium"'s time signature is all over the damn place.

Black album was when I first listened to Metallica. All the scary guys at the local swimming pool wore Justice or Puppets tank tops so I just assumed from that that I wouldnt like them

Thing I remember most about Enter Sandman was how awesome it sounded to me that very first time, and then later how disappointed I was by the video

"A fucking TRUCK? ... How is that scary?"

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 6 July 2015 21:34 (eight years ago) link

Do they have stuff not in 4/4 or 3/4?

it's not like they'll play in 5 or in 7 for a whole verse, but on AJFA they're constantly taking a 4/4 riff and adding or taking away beats. 'Blackened' is crazy.

lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 6 July 2015 21:36 (eight years ago) link

My step-brother got me to listen to Master of Puppets on our summer vacation to Florida. It was one of those first times where I got excited because here was something new that I was definitely going to enjoy.

Though that trek out of "Orion" and into that whale song intro of Damage Inc. could lull you to sleep before turning on you and making you go

I discovered that I liked Puppets when one of the guys in my art class put it on the cassette player (art class is where dorky me learned about anything that wasnt played on the radio)

i remember hearing Orion in that class and being like O_O

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 6 July 2015 21:59 (eight years ago) link

I wonder if the reason we only got 18 ballots was because ILX skews young now and no one remembers /V|etallic|-\ when they were relevant?

:wq (Leee), Monday, 6 July 2015 22:50 (eight years ago) link

idk if it's exactly that, though different age groups might have different levels of engagement

my metallica fandom was definitely extended by my 70 year old piano teacher suddenly becoming a big fan of s&m

EotB is my only track so far. Someone said upthread that they think it's a weird choice for a single, but I don't think so at all! The 'do you x what I x' hook is so catchy!

Been revisiting (or re-revisiting, if you will) the Justice songs since we started running this poll. It was the first new Metallica record I ever bought, and honestly, the whole thing just ran together. There was the do you do what I do song, the one that started off like the wizard of oz, "one", etc. Funny how a few years later, one of my favorite bands would be Pavement, and I don't know half of their song titles either.

Ha, roger. Feel free to stitch away. The only reason I cut up that timeline was to make it fit ILX formatting. Otherwise, it would've looked like one big skinny thumbnail.

I see Europe is well into its day already. Is lunchtime in the States ok for the next batch, or would earlier or later better accommodate everyone?

Was never the same after I learned it wasn't "Sand Patrol". It wasn't among the trio of black albums songs that slid off of my ballot (Of Wolf and Man, which placed above, probably should have been). A hell of a song though, undermined by being way overplayed during its heyday. Is there a black album single that wasn't overplayed though?

Man, I just don't get SBT.

I snickered at Of Wolf & Man like the needlessly stuck-up Metallicaficinado that I consider myself to be, but even that "Off to the pool deck eyyyyye go... " has a catchy gallop to it.

This one though --- that's it, I'm calling it. Sorry, but it's my least favorite song on this countdown.

lol revealing myself as untrue here but i was introduced to metallica mostly through that first apocalyptica record, and the riff for "harvester of sorrow" was basically simultaneously the meanest and prettiest thing i'd ever heard played on a cello

I remember being kind of intrigued / scared by Metallica due to the mulleted guy with the METAL UP YOUR ASS muscle-t in my study hall circa 1987. But somehow I ended up with a cassette of RTL a year later - I have no idea where it came from - and I used to listen to that or the Doors Greatest Hits tapes on my yellow walkman when I mowed my grandmother's lawn.

Still would have voted for Puppets over Lightning, no question. My favorite record from any band often ends up being the one I heard first, this is one of the rare exceptions.

joygoat, Tuesday, 7 July 2015 19:10 (eight years ago) link

to me, unforgiven II is not only much much better than the first, but my favorite song by the band…it's like JH had matured in 98 to a point in which he could feel what he's talking about, whereas on the black album, he still too insecure that, I dunno, the guys in Metal Church might laugh at his pussy ballads. I didn't vote, but this would have been #1 if I did.

Q: You played at Live Earth. What are your thoughts on the climate crisis. What can METALLICA contribute to [the whole process]?

Hetfield: "I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day. I didn't quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don't like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do — we don't wanna cloud it with 'Democrat, Republican,' whatever. Our philosophy is 'think for yourself' at the end of the day — do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt — whatever it is; whether it's man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature — we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad."

And I mean, I agree with that to an extent. There's a lot of room in our future for the development of geoengineering technologies, but it's such a weak dodge to not acknowledge that there's a crisis and instead lump it all in with "politics".

In 1984, the French record label Bernett Records misprinted the color of the album cover in green, rather than blue, and 400 copies with the green cover were pressed. Because of their rarity, this misprint caused these green albums to become collectors' items.[12]

Good analysis of the intro from here:

For me, the biggest decision in “Ride the Lightning” comes in the intro. The first riff is a 12-second fanfare: “Here we are!” It has minor key harmonies with a strong classical flavor. So it sets the expectation of more melody to follow – and a lesser band would have delivered on that. But Metallica don’t. They kick aside melodicism and ram a tritone riff down your throat: two deadly, dissonant notes. It’s like entering a room while wearing a tailored suit, then braining everyone in sight with a hammer.

So how many of us know anyone who was sent to the counselor's office after they transcribed the lyrics to "Fade to Black" during study hall? I know two.

I'm not big on poll speculation because you all will start going WHERE'S MASTER? WHERE'S ONE? while I'll want to discuss the subtle nuances of "Dirty Window" next.

But no rules here. Speculate away, if you wanna.

xps:

Funny thing about Blackened and Battery's intros. Masterand Justice were the first Metallica albums I bought. Got them on the same day, when I was 10 or 11. I had only heard One and someone covering the bass breakdown from Orion. That's all I knew. I think I actually plugged Master into the deck first. And it fooled me! I was crestfallen. "Oh no, what is this - classical? This tape was printed with the wrong music on it. I'll have to get mom to take me back to the mall..." and then the thrash kicked in. I kid you not that the same thing happened to me an hour later when I played Justice. "What? What is this some kind of new age crap? Oh, ok. Here we go."

Didn't "Orion" win the radio button MOP poll? It was going to contend for my #1 (ended up #2), though when I first heard it, I hated it for that soft bass solo section, which is now my favorite thing.

When I was a kid, there was this sports talk host on the radio who'd have Metallica playing in the background on Friday nights during his show, and "One" was a staple. For young me, listening to this spooky moody song in the dark was an otherworldly, invigorating atmosphere.

I feel a bit bad not having voted for Unforgiven as it's the first Metallica song I loved - my friend played it for me on his Walkman at school and I was bowled over, I remember it very vividly. Huge moment in my music fandom. I still love the spaghetti western vibe on the choruses, but the verses are pretty ploddy really.

not sufficiently familiar w/ tallica's work to comment intelligently but that for whom the bell tolls live vid is amazing and reminds me of the live show I caught @ roskilde festival 2013 which was a funtastic riff-fest for 70.000 people and esp me and my friend airguitaring for hours in the front pit hammered drunk woohoo!

On a side not Lulu is what got me interested in metallica, and it helped turn me on to a lot of heavy metal, which is something I've really appreciated as a concertgoer since, attending doom festivals and thrash shows

Kinda want to address this. I think she would have been happy with the choice. We were headbangers. So like, I don't feel like any slight was done to the deceased. She didn't die from suicide, so the lyrics were off the mark, but I think we were all just 14-year-olds doing our best to cope. Still, I haven't had much taste for the song since.

Anyway, been watching so much backstage crap from these guys. Last night I googled up Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica to have on in the background while I was cooking dinner. Found a youtube that was an hour and a half long. That looked about right to me so I clicked play and went into the other room to start chopping up cucumbers. After about 10 minutes, I realize this ain't right so I go back to my computer to check it. It's the Year and a Half in the Life OUTTAKES REEL. A Year and a Half is just not enough for a diehard Metallica fan.

Speaking of which, can't stop watching "Kirk's Birthday". I'm only now catching that Lars is not talking about some "A.C. Anderson" but "H.C. Andersen" - as in Hans Christan Andersen.

Never heard him referred to by his initials before. Like some dude complaining how we haven't hung any E.A. Poe posters up at his birthday party.

pplains, Thursday, 9 July 2015 14:16 (eight years ago) link

People say E.A. Poe all the time in my experience, but I've never heard anyone say H.C. Anderson.

I loved Metallica up to and including 'Justice,' but dang what a fall from dizzying heights. I'm going to explore Robert Trujello's other bands today, 'cause I gotta believe he's a better fit elsewhere.

Hey that's great! Now I wanna hear funked up, Cyco-infused Metallica, but of course Lars has not one funky drummer bone in his body.

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 9 July 2015 15:08 (eight years ago) link

xpost in danish we don't say hans christian andersen we say h c andersen so that's prob why lars would say it like that in english - sounds better in danish though

niels, Thursday, 9 July 2015 16:19 (eight years ago) link

what's it sound like in Danish and why just the initials? Asking only out of curiosity.

Ok, I hadn't noticed this before, but does anyone else hear something that sounds like someone saying "ooo" at about 0:27 in Creeping Death?

how's life, Thursday, 9 July 2015 21:21 (eight years ago) link

pplains "h" is pronounced something like "hoe" so the initial aspiration makes for a nice name - "hoe cee andersen"

niels, Friday, 10 July 2015 09:46 (eight years ago) link

no clue why the convention is to use the initials - why is it J K Rowling and J R R Tolkien? maybe similar explanation

niels, Friday, 10 July 2015 09:50 (eight years ago) link

getting off topic, but this link has a recording of the danish pronunciation http://www.forvo.com/word/h.c._andersen/

niels, Friday, 10 July 2015 09:52 (eight years ago) link

Thanks for the link.

Just never thought about names being commonly said in different ways like that. Pronounciation is one thing, but initials and format is another.

pplains, Friday, 10 July 2015 12:15 (eight years ago) link

yeah me neither - but it's actually nice to know that the more common English version is the full name since every once in while Hans Christian comes up in touristy conversation for me, and "h" is such a clumsy letter to pronounce in english anyway

niels, Friday, 10 July 2015 12:34 (eight years ago) link

Must've been why I thought Lars said "A.C. Anderson" at first.

pplains, Friday, 10 July 2015 15:18 (eight years ago) link

But you should hear my Danish though. Makes St. Anger sound good.

There was a vogue in British letters in the early 20th century to go by one's initials -- EM Forster, DH Lawrence, WH Auden, etc. -- which might explain JRR Tolkien. I dunno why that is, though, maybe the peculiarities of British naming conventions.

JK Rowling may have initially been to obscure her gender to be more marketable? Total speculation however, and we've seen how my speculative skills have panned out in this thread.

:wq (Leee), Friday, 10 July 2015 16:32 (eight years ago) link

Always figure in the cases of J.R.R. Tolkien or W.E.B. Du Bois, it's that they've got too many names.

pplains, Friday, 10 July 2015 18:23 (eight years ago) link

putting "Sweet Jane" on the spotify playlist in place of "Junior Dad" is pretty shitty imo

Is Lulu on Spotify? I couldn't find it.

pplains, Saturday, 11 July 2015 01:22 (eight years ago) link

There's still a place in that version of "Sweet Jane" when James is roarin' "Suhweeeeet JANE!" that you realize, holy shit, not only is this Lou Reed singing this song with Metallica backing him, but they had such a good time doing it, they went on to make a sadomasochism record together and then he died.

pplains, Saturday, 11 July 2015 01:26 (eight years ago) link

Lulu's not on Spotify. i'm just saying i'd rather there be nothing representing its spot in the playlist than a replacement.

three months pass...

sad I missed this. I woulda picked the title track to RTL was my #1, but y'all did good work.

I was thinking today how FB or social media not existing during the release of Load actually made the internet reactions better. The meltdowns on USENet were gold.

example from noted poster "Loser Poser":

"hmm... I was wondering which names would suit best for the Metallica
members, because I personally feel that Metallica doesen't deserve the name
Metallica anymore...because the new albums load off with bollocks 1 and 2
are...what they are.
So here's my choices:

producer Bob Rock--------> Pop Pop

James Hetfield------------> Heinz Shitfield
Lars Ulrich--------> Mars Bullshit
Kirk Hammet-----------> Hint Gaymint
Jason Newsted--------> Jason Voorhees...ooops wrong name, I meant
Playson Newsdead

and finally Metallica---------> Wimpallica"

pretty much.

y'know going back to Disposable Heroes, this was a song that took me like most of my adult life to love. I used to think it was just a gimmicky, hookless speedfest, but really this is one of the most interesting songs on the album, the speed isn't why it's interesting.

something about the way Jaymz roars "I was born for dyiiiiiiiin'" gives me chills now. hard to believe he once actually had principles that he wasn't afraid to commit to on record, years before publicly giving his wishy-washy "I don't really have 'opinions' man" bet hedging....

what was the first Metallica release everybody owned?

for me it was the cd single of "One/Eye of the Beholder", cos it was all I could afford with my allowance and my mom didn't want me using her money to buy "Metallica" albums even though she had no fucking idea who they were.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:17 (eight years ago) link

First owned an audio dub of the One video that I made by holding a cassette recorder up to the TV (also got "We Want Eazy" by Eazy-E and "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen that day). Next bought a cassingle of One/The Prince. Then I bought MOP and AJFA on the same day.

how's life, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:39 (eight years ago) link

Also, realized I was wrong upthread about Blackened being the first Metallica song I ever heard. I must have been getting my facts wrong in the excitement of the poll.

how's life, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:46 (eight years ago) link

I really missed out. had I given a shit at the time, I coulda had several of my classmates dub me copies of their Metallica albums, but I was listening pretty much to MC Hammer between 1988-1991 and Aerosmith/Ace of Base by 1993. didn't even get the black album til 1995 :/

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 19 October 2015 17:51 (eight years ago) link

I do remember waiting up to hear "Until It Sleeps" the night it dropped (at the time I liked it)...and then did the same for Re-Load.

at first, during the intro, I was all like

and then the verse riff came in and I was like

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 19 October 2015 20:14 (eight years ago) link

My first 'tallica was probably AJFA and then the Black Album.

:wq (Leee), Monday, 19 October 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link

I had Kill 'Em All (and the "Jump in the Fire" 12") on vinyl, but never owned Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Picked up again with the $5.98 EP on cassette, then ...And Justice For All on vinyl (preceded by the "Eye of the Beholder" cassette single). I think I had the Black Album on cassette, then never bought anything else until Death Magnetic on CD.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 19 October 2015 20:29 (eight years ago) link

Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield from Metallica came over and we did some outrageous partying. Sally was there and I remember there was a girl that James wanted to fuck and I let him take her into my bedroom. They were in there for a while and I had to get in there to get something, so I crept in quietly and saw James head-fucking her. He was standing on the bed, ramming her head against the wall, moaning in that thunderous voice of his, just slamming away, and bellowing "That'll be fine! That'll be fine! Yes! That'll be fine!"

how's life, Thursday, 22 October 2015 22:17 (eight years ago) link

is this wishful thinking, or did someone once make an ambient Metallica mix of all their pretty classical intros and baroque breakdowns?

Did a little searching to no avail, but did find this!
