I still remember hearing Sandman for the first time. Humble brag, but I've been a Metallica fan since the Summer of '86. We'd heard all the rumors and read RIP magazine that this new album was going to be different. Scared to death that they were going to turn into Winger.

Listened to the tape in the parking lot of the shopping center where I bought it. Buddy and I just looked at each other. "Not bad. At least it's not Winger."

Still get a kick out of it now that I only hear it occasionally. Even Tom Leykis couldn't ruin this song for me.

Also enjoy this poll kicking off with it because it's a helluva album intro (James wanted "Holier Than Thou" to start the record.)

And as you can see, it was awarded exactly 100 points. All the other songs below it were in the double-digits.

I remember hearing it for the first time at summer camp. We were all gathered around a boombox playing 98 Rock. To me, it was too corny to be Metallica. "What was this, the new Megadeth song or something?" And then weirdly, the new Megadeth song (from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey) had a "Now I lay me down to sleep..." line in it.

Darker & Faster Version Ok, what the hell is going on with these.

I wish I could remember the grammatical term for swapping around the subject, metal style, to give you master of puppets vs. puppet master. Makes everything more metal. There's a baby store by here called Cradles of Distinction.

One of the Justice tracks I didn't end up voting for. I love it in context of the hour-long riff fest, but as a stand-alone song it plods a little for me.

I remember buying the cassingle of it before ...Justice came out and liking the B-side (Budgie's "Breadfan") a lot more.

beyond reed's devastating vocal i think this song is the apex of "gentle" metallica, i.e. "unforgiven," "hero of the day" etc. they just find this gorgeous, simple phrase and wring the most pathos out of it. also love lars' changeable snare hits at the end of each measure

imo lars is often less a shitty drummer than just another guitar

Kind of randomly listened to "Damage Inc." after years of dismissing it, and I ended up including it on my ballot for that intro alone.

wow, those really are phenomenal graphics. truly, a work of art.

interesting to see Lightning blowing everything else out of the water. it's always been my sentimental favourite, but i tend to meet more Puppets worshipers.

eclectic results so far! the opening riff on Eye of the Beholder slays me every time, slow crescendo and all. Damage, Inc. is such a rush. maybe their heaviest song, pound for pound.

It's one of those -you-had-to-be-there things, but one of my best segues back in college radio days was going from "Eiffel Tower High" by Hüsker Dü into "Damage Inc." - starting the latter about 40 seconds before the former had ended.

Been scouring around for a copy of " ...And Justice for Jason," and so far ... no dice. It's on youtube, in pieces, and there is supposedly a version with his isolated Guitar Hero tracks mixed in, but it's been pretty well scrubbed from at least the first few layers of the internet.

My step-brother got me to listen to Master of Puppets on our summer vacation to Florida. It was one of those first times where I got excited because here was something new that I was definitely going to enjoy.

Puppets was my number 1 album, though I was torn between that and Lightning so pleased with the winner.

EotB is my only track so far. Someone said upthread that they think it's a weird choice for a single, but I don't think so at all! The 'do you x what I x' hook is so catchy!

But the incredibly tricksy tempo/groove shift between the verses and the chorus might be a bit much for the radio, granted.

Been revisiting (or re-revisiting, if you will) the Justice songs since we started running this poll. It was the first new Metallica record I ever bought, and honestly, the whole thing just ran together. There was the do you do what I do song, the one that started off like the wizard of oz, "one", etc. Funny how a few years later, one of my favorite bands would be Pavement, and I don't know half of their song titles either.

Used to get deep into CoK, actually me and my friends would sometimes have mammoth sessions of the Call of Cthulhu RPG with it playing on repeat in the background.

Was never the same after I learned it wasn't "Sand Patrol". It wasn't among the trio of black albums songs that slid off of my ballot (Of Wolf and Man, which placed above, probably should have been). lol revealing myself as untrue here but i was introduced to metallica mostly through that first apocalyptica record, and the riff for "harvester of sorrow" was basically simultaneously the meanest and prettiest thing i'd ever heard played on a cello

I remember being kind of intrigued / scared by Metallica due to the mulleted guy with the METAL UP YOUR ASS muscle-t in my study hall circa 1987. But somehow I ended up with a cassette of RTL a year later - I have no idea where it came from - and I used to listen to that or the Doors Greatest Hits tapes on my yellow walkman when I mowed my grandmother's lawn.

Still would have voted for Puppets over Lightning, no question. My favorite record from any band often ends up being the one I heard first, this is one of the rare exceptions.

For some reason whenever I heard Escape, I always had a made-up video in my head of James driving shirtless through a desert full of cacti singing at top volume and driving a shitty brown 70s van with one of those diamond shaped windows in the side.

honestly i have a hard time feeling the downbeat on some their super fast thrash tunes with the snare on the upbeat. not a lot to hold on to. FFwF in particular, the accents in the verses always get twisted around in my head to be on the downbeat.

i'm gonna use this thread anyway to share my metallica experiences

so i think master of puppets may have been my first mp3 ever. a guy named XxMattYxX (i think) who i knew through a n64 cheat code forum sent it to me using aim file transfer. it took like 5 hours on a dialup

also: the Fight Fire With Fire vid from '86 is nothing short of ferocious. love how they tear through it, no bullshit, just going about the job in the most intense way imaginable. would have loved to have seen them in that era.

Glad to see so much love for Fight Fire With Fire. But a bit gutted it's unlikely Leper Messiah will make it now. I thought it might be the one Puppets track to be overlooked, much as I love it.

Though by my reckoning there are eight dead certs and two wildcards to come, so who knows.

No forgot Fade to Black, only one wildcard.

Memorized all sorts of bits from Cliff Em All tape: the absomotherfucking-lutely bit, where they all play freeze, the bizarre intro where they walk into a convenience store and walk out with beer in hand.

And I mean, I agree with that to an extent. There's a lot of room in our future for the development of geoengineering technologies, but it's such a weak dodge to not acknowledge that there's a crisis and instead lump it all in with "politics".

Funny thing about Blackened and Battery's intros. Masterand Justice were the first Metallica albums I bought. Got them on the same day, when I was 10 or 11. I had only heard One and someone covering the bass breakdown from Orion. That's all I knew. I think I actually plugged Master into the deck first. And it fooled me! I was crestfallen. "Oh no, what is this - classical? This tape was printed with the wrong music on it. I'll have to get mom to take me back to the mall..." and then the thrash kicked in. I kid you not that the same thing happened to me an hour later when I played Justice. "What? What is this some kind of new age crap? Oh, ok. Here we go."

When I was a kid, there was this sports talk host on the radio who'd have Metallica playing in the background on Friday nights during his show, and "One" was a staple. For young me, listening to this spooky moody song in the dark was an otherworldly, invigorating atmosphere.

That said, I hope the one (pun!) from MOP beats the one from RTL for #1.

Man that video freaked me out when we saw the world premiere.

I even used to have a cassette I recorded off of the television, so I could have a version with "What is democracy?" dropped in here and there.

I feel a bit bad not having voted for Unforgiven as it's the first Metallica song I loved - my friend played it for me on his Walkman at school and I was bowled over, I remember it very vividly. Huge moment in my music fandom. I still love the spaghetti western vibe on the choruses, but the verses are pretty ploddy really.

On a side not Lulu is what got me interested in metallica, and it helped turn me on to a lot of heavy metal, which is something I've really appreciated as a concertgoer since, attending doom festivals and thrash shows

Kinda want to address this. I think she would have been happy with the choice. We were headbangers. So like, I don't feel like any slight was done to the deceased. She didn't die from suicide, so the lyrics were off the mark, but I think we were all just 14-year-olds doing our best to cope. Still, I haven't had much taste for the song since.

Anyway, been watching so much backstage crap from these guys. Last night I googled up Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica to have on in the background while I was cooking dinner. Found a youtube that was an hour and a half long. That looked about right to me so I clicked play and went into the other room to start chopping up cucumbers. After about 10 minutes, I realize this ain't right so I go back to my computer to check it. It's the Year and a Half in the Life OUTTAKES REEL. A Year and a Half is just not enough for a diehard Metallica fan.

There was a vogue in British letters in the early 20th century to go by one's initials -- EM Forster, DH Lawrence, WH Auden, etc. -- which might explain JRR Tolkien. I dunno why that is, though, maybe the peculiarities of British naming conventions.

JK Rowling may have initially been to obscure her gender to be more marketable? Total speculation however, and we've seen how my speculative skills have panned out in this thread.

Always figure in the cases of J.R.R. Tolkien or W.E.B. Du Bois, it's that they've got too many names.

y'know going back to Disposable Heroes, this was a song that took me like most of my adult life to love. I used to think it was just a gimmicky, hookless speedfest, but really this is one of the most interesting songs on the album, the speed isn't why it's interesting.

for me it was the cd single of "One/Eye of the Beholder", cos it was all I could afford with my allowance and my mom didn't want me using her money to buy "Metallica" albums even though she had no fucking idea who they were.

First owned an audio dub of the One video that I made by holding a cassette recorder up to the TV (also got "We Want Eazy" by Eazy-E and "Punk Rock Girl" by the Dead Milkmen that day). Next bought a cassingle of One/The Prince. Then I bought MOP and AJFA on the same day.

Also, realized I was wrong upthread about Blackened being the first Metallica song I ever heard. I must have been getting my facts wrong in the excitement of the poll.

I really missed out. had I given a shit at the time, I coulda had several of my classmates dub me copies of their Metallica albums, but I was listening pretty much to MC Hammer between 1988-1991 and Aerosmith/Ace of Base by 1993. didn't even get the black album til 1995 :/

I had Kill 'Em All (and the "Jump in the Fire" 12") on vinyl, but never owned Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Picked up again with the $5.98 EP on cassette, then ...And Justice For All on vinyl (preceded by the "Eye of the Beholder" cassette single). I think I had the Black Album on cassette, then never bought anything else until Death Magnetic on CD.

Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield from Metallica came over and we did some outrageous partying. Sally was there and I remember there was a girl that James wanted to fuck and I let him take her into my bedroom. They were in there for a while and I had to get in there to get something, so I crept in quietly and saw James head-fucking her. He was standing on the bed, ramming her head against the wall, moaning in that thunderous voice of his, just slamming away, and bellowing "That'll be fine! That'll be fine! Yes! That'll be fine!"
