Meet Disturbed's amazing frontman David Draiman, The Man Who Speaks Only In Cliches

Have mainstream hard rock bozos always spoken like brain-damaged athletes, or is this a new thing?

The following quotes were taken from an interview with Mr. Draiman in the Aug / September issue of Revolver. We will, for now, ignore the references by the piece's author to the band "firing on all cylinders" and "hitting the brakes," but if there hasn't already been an Onion parody of an interview between two people who speak completely in tired metaphors, there should be.

All I wanna know is, is that your typo or did the mag's editor really allow the phrase "take the reigns" to make it into print?

I interviewed this guy twice, and no matter what the ostensible topic was, all he wanted to talk about was how enraged he was when dudes at his shows flipped him off. "WHEN YOU DO THAT, THAT MEANS SOMETHING! THAT MEANS YOU ARE DISRESPECTING ME, AND THAT MEANS I WANNA FUCKING KICK YOUR FUCKING ASS!!"

veronica moser, Thursday, 30 July 2015 00:50 (eight years ago) link

would you say he was... disturbed by being flipped off

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 30 July 2015 08:59 (eight years ago) link

I'm not saying the guy's smart, but imagine what it's like to be in a commercially-successful band. Countless interviews filled with the the same questions. "Where do you get your ideas," "When can we expect album," etc. Sooner or later, it seems to me that you'd have to start answering with cliches just to say sane.

Dude's a mook and I could care less about his band.

But... When he was playing Ozzfest one year (I went to try and figure out which year but Disturbed played it a LOT of times and I went several years so it was either 2001, 2003 or 2006 and it was in Columbus, Ohio) he spent the whole time on his bike around the second stage watching the smaller bands and talking to anyone who came up to him, having a blast.

So good on him! Shame about the music.

"WHEN YOU DO THAT, THAT MEANS SOMETHING! THAT MEANS YOU ARE DISRESPECTING ME, AND THAT MEANS I WANNA FUCKING KICK YOUR FUCKING ASS!!"

I interviewed him three times, and we talked about all kinds of things - my impression has always been that he's smart, just not as smart as he thinks he is. That being said, my reading of his personality (which is bolstered by Serj Tankian referring to him, in my presence, as "Gene Simmons Jr.") makes me think he was probably peacocking for you. He seems like one of those dudes who thinks "it's not necessarily guaranteed that this female journalist wants to fuck me, but she might, so I'll approach this conversation with that in mind".

When I was EIC of Metal Edge, the publicist for Seether got very testy with me because I wouldn't put them on the cover.
