Best song on this awesome (mostly) 70s soul mix that someone made for me some time in the late 90s/early 2000s

Discovered when I was packing up for my move, this is a mix that an online friend made for me back in the early days of CD burners in order to cure me of my ignorance of 70s soul. It worked--at least three or four of the artists represented here are, some 15+ years later, among my musical heroes. But what is your fave?

As much as Sly, The Spinners, and Bill Withers all became giants in my musical world in the years since I got this mix, I think my fave song here is still the Delfonics one.

Family Affair

Sly, Rufus, or 'Use Me'. I love most of the other artists but these aren't necessarily among my fave picks from their discographies.

I was waiting for someone to catch Lenny. I don't have an explanation for why that's there, and if I was ever given one, I've forgotten it. Certainly, the song is a 70s soul wannabe, and a fairly credible one at that, but it is definitely CD space that could have gone towards something far more worthy.

It's a beautiful, beautiful song.

Probably Ain't No Sunshine, Didn't I Blow Your Mind, or Family Affair are my favorites on this. But then there are probably 3-4 songs that would be a close tie for second.

This is basically all the shit I was listening to in high school when I was hanging out with people who were really into hip-hop sample spotting and blacksploitation films. It got played out for me at some point but when I go back to it it's fresh again.

There are four or five I could go for here but 'People Make the World Go Round' is probably the one that needs my vote the most. Such a beautiful and understated song.

I couldn't stand Lenny Kravitz's rock-star stuff--"American Woman" ranks with the worst covers ever--but "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over" was a pretty good imitation of the lighter side of early-'70 soul, say the Main Ingredient more than Al Green. So I can sort of see why your friend included him.

I mean, it makes more sense than putting Mr. Big or Bob Carlisle on there.

I support that post, good chune, fits the mix

Had this on in the car again today as I ran around doing errands and I've decided that this mix is my fave summer album of all time.

when I was 18, my mate Phil did me an amazing mixtape, titled Souled and Delivered, featuring Bobby Womack's Across 110th Street, Ann Peebles' I Can't stand the Rain, the OJays' Backstabbers, Al Green's Tired of Being Alone, and many many more!

I will never not vote the Delfonics

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Thursday, 3 September 2015 22:28 (eight years ago) link

Sly means more to me, especially circa Riot, than the Temptations ever will, but "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, so that.
