Natasha Kmeto - Inevitable

Really loving this album right now. I think I remember someone (Rev?) repping for her last album without ever getting round to listening to it, but this new one really is excellent. Her voice reminds me of Jessie Ware at her most full-throated, the whole album is a great illustration of the importance of economy coupled with volume. Most of the songs make a couple of phrases and a handful of sounds do a lot of work the effect (especially when played loud) is monolithic and very lonely-sounding, like walking around in an empty futuristic city. But unlike, say, the Kelela album, the production enhances the drama of the songs rather than feeling dislocated from it.

Anyone else feeling it?

I definitely need to give it another listen but very pleased to get a copy of this a couple of weeks back. Great album title too.

I enjoyed the first album, but it lost its allure quite quickly, don't think I've played it for at least a year... I will certainly check out the new one.

i really like her production, i really like her label, i really like her, but there's something that doesn't click for me. like, the lead vocal always sounds weirdly disconnected from the track?

I think my issue with the first album is that the songwriting hadn't quite caught up with the sonic ideas and the strength of her vocals.

fwiw, the title of the album is actually Inevitable.

Ineffabitable

I think that's what I like about her, there's this contentment to let the skeletons of songs just hang there and build before she hits you with a powerful a chord change or a sudden crescendo or something.

I like this but I don't yet love it like I love the (similarly minimal) Abra album

this record is so good

It's weird hearing this record as a 'new body of work' because I've heard her perform these songs several times over the past year+. Anyway, Matt DC otm. Yeah yeah singer/songwriter whatever, but her tracks use the build/release logic of dance music even when they're not danceable. Not sure whether I like this more or less than Crisis yet but she's a total gem and I'm glad other people are catching on.

I really love how she knows how to bring in a big bass burst or a sudden clattering of beats at the moment of maximum impact, having used sounds so sparingly up until that point. Also she has presence.

three weeks pass...

OK, this is much better than Crisis. Tougher production, stronger hooks.

ten months pass...

listening to this album right now, still so good, still heavily slept on

"Dirty Mind Melt" is the only track from her I've been into. Any other recommendations?

yeah this is really good, I get the chorus of "I Thought You Had A Girlfriend" stuck in my head all the time. The album makes me think of what a pop Gazelle Twin album could be

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 21:34 (seven years ago) link

"i thought you had a boyfriend" is such a beautiful and intense queer song. i would echo matt dc's comments about her impressive handle on dynamic juxtaposition which is evident in that track particularly. i too love this album, super gorgeous throughout, hope she continues in this sort of direction with whatever she does next
