Isn't there a Stones song too?

I knew It's For You as a kid by Springwell, and later Head East, before I ever heard Cilla. Love that song, but this is Come And Get It for me.

Don't know most of those, but "Badge" is a favourite, so I'll vote anyway.

as much as I love Badfinger, "sour milk sea" by Jackie Lomax is the bomb. maybe the best song George ever wrote?

Come And Get It ftw.

this isn't.. quite the same version that's on Anthology 3, i think it's this take or this demo but they remixed it or something.

I can see Badfinger winning outright, but some of those earlier songs are pretty cool, and just listen to Penina, man it's *terrible*. The strings are all out of time with the drums and the singing is like some horrible working mens club crooner taking the piss.

Sour Milk Sea, hands down

Isn't there a Stones song too?

The Beatles released a version of "I Wanna Be Your Man" at the time, which isn't the case with all of these.

I like that early stuff a lot. Thinking "Love of the Loved" or "From a Window" of the ones that I know but there are a lot that I don't.

Should also do a poll for worst giveaway hackwork. "Bad To Me" is so bad. To me.

Vic Perry, Saturday, 3 October 2015 19:39 (eight years ago) link

Would vote for "Badge" but should it really count?

Alone Again XOR (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 October 2015 20:37 (eight years ago) link

It was George/Ringo so yeah

Mark G, Saturday, 3 October 2015 20:44 (eight years ago) link

"Ringo" Clapton, you mean.

Love, Wilco (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 3 October 2015 21:58 (eight years ago) link

Ringo came up with the "told you about the swans that they live in the park" line.

pplains, Saturday, 3 October 2015 23:39 (eight years ago) link

Ringo responsible for every wonderful line that John, Paul, George wrote.

Sorry the audio is bad, but perhaps the Hungarian subtitles will aid comprehension.

lol at proby's ridiculous, overwrought vocal on "that means a lot." just dripping. it was never a top-drawer lennon/mccartney classic but he really turns it into the most generic period dreck imaginable. like it should be in some shitty teen movie where the action gets periodically interrupted by a shitty band performing a shitty song or two while all the teens in the movie enthusiastically clap along.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 06:22 (eight years ago) link

The last version the Beatles attempted of that one had them basically ripping the piss out of it and laffing "a lot".

So, yeah, not top drawer..

Everyone upthread OTM re: "Sour Milk Sea." One of Ringo's finest moments, and I can think of maybe 8-10 songs on the White Album it could've/should've replaced (as-is, retaining Lomax' vocal). I forget which song Ian MacDonald said this about, but it applies here: if Paul wasn't jealous of George, he should've been.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 6 October 2015 13:53 (eight years ago) link

Most of these songs are good to great, and the demos and outtakes versions the beatles did have become some of my favorite things to listen to over the past few years since they're relatively 'new'. I vote world without love, I've always loved that song. good version too.

akm, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 04:17 (eight years ago) link

This has to be 'Badge' for me.

The Beatles version of 'I'll Be On My Way' is on Live At The BBC.

Turrican, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 11:15 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, SMS is a really weird thing to sleep on, even by John and Paul's standards for George. I like "Savoy Truffle" a lot but no way is it a better song. I actually like the demo better than Lomax's though - the latter is a little slower and his throatier vocal suppresses what in hindsight seems like an almost proto-Bolan number lurking somewhere in Harrison's thin little vocal. I do like the shambley looseness of the instrumental track on its own though!

Inevitably, someone's combined the two tracks, which gets us sorta close to what a White Album "Sour Milk Sea" would have sounded like, since it's the Beatles playing on Lomax's version anyway. Obviously the vocals would have been more developed, hopefully without losing the charm of the demo.

Let me think of that song:

"Get out of sour milk sea..
Get back to where you used to be"

Hmmm, I wonder...
