So, what's your AOTY 2016?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 05:01 (eight years ago) link

Wild Nothing - Reichpop

The last time I heard from them they sounded like jangle rock band. This one is the first track from the new album and it sounds closer to afro-pop (maybe it's just the polyrhythms), haven't heard anything else from this album yet. So far, so good.

Charlie Hilton - 100 Million
This was technically released online a few weeks ago but the album drops this month so I'm considering it a 2016 release. She's a former member of band Blouse, song features Mac DeMarco on guitar and vocals and was produced by Woods' Jarvis Taveniere... it sounds exactly like you imagine it sounds considering the people involved. I'm getting a VU's Loaded vibe from this song, which means I love it.

I suppose I'll be updating on a spotify playlist anything that I find interesting and purge every now and then like last year: https://open.spotify.com/user/moteldemoka/playlist/7IUyyJbFUQ9r8kxQar0Cwr

Maybe you're already familiar with those but this is mostly based on the neo-classical stuff:

Otto A. Totland
Lubomyr Melnyk
Takeshi Nishimoto

Kidnap Kid - Birds That Fly

is nice. Don't want to describe it in case god forbid I use the wrong house sub-genre, but it's one of his more straightforwardly house tracks (compared to the more sui generis things he was doing a few years back that I like even more).

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 30 January 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have (and like) the recent(ish) Otto A. Totland album. I like Melnyk - but haven't heard the most recent one (I thought someone might buy it me for Xmas and then forgot about it). Takeshi Nishimoto seems to be in the "sounds nice; need to stop buying stuff like this" category. I've a curious number of Colleen albums but haven't kept up.

Not sure about Whitney though if anyone wants an Oxford meet up where we drink beer and throw axes/smoke bombs, that'd be cool.

Prince Rama: Xtreme Now

I have never heard about them before, but this album is ridiculously good, a very strange and catchy mixture of styles - electro-pop, psych, even new age sometimes. So far clearly my favourite album in 2016.

There are only 4 tracks on Spotify so far, the album comes on 4 March: http://www.stereogum.com/1861912/stream-prince-rama-xtreme-now-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/

PJ Harvey - The Wheel

pitchforkian at best (cryptosicko), Monday, 29 February 2016 23:42 (eight years ago) link

I used to listen to so many albums, maybe 100 per year... nowadays I don't have enough time or the right mood to sit down and listen.

It's a brief list but here's the list of albums I've loved in the past two months, not enough for a top 10 and technically KING is a compilation, Anna Homler a reissue from 1985 and Livanskiy an EP...

Anna Homler & Steve Moshier - Breadwoman & Other Tales
Animal Collective - Painting With
Anderson Paak - Malibu
Prins Thomas - Principe del Norte
KING - We are King
Kedr Livanskiy - January Sun
Wacław Zimpel - Lines
Good WIllsmith - Things Our Bodies Used to Have
David Bowie - Blackstar

Some ilxors might enjoy my albums list far better than my songs list, I usually go for more "world creating" experiments in albums and easy stuff on singles.

i've just been listening to more eps lately myself. when i was younger eps seemed like a niche format for tracks that weren't good enough to put on an album proper, but lately there's some perception that music doesn't need to be either three or 45 minutes to be worth listening to.

i've just been lumping them in with albums this year, though. something like gorguts' "pleiades dust"- so it's 33 minutes and, what, an album is 35? not worth differentiating.

I think the You're Me releases would make a fine addition to karl's list, esp to round out the Vancouver sounds.

Stuck between deciding on their 1080p album and the Isla tape, both were great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=822jL7Q4GKo
