new Terry Malts is great power-pop-punk

na (NA), Monday, 24 October 2016 21:54 (seven years ago) link

Terry Malts rules so hard.

I'd not heard Kevin Devine before this new one, but it's great.

Thanks for the Rosenstock d/l link up there. We Cool? ended up in my Top 10 of '16. Excited to hear the new one.

OK, this has been my Rolling Emo Thread roundup.

alpine static, Monday, 24 October 2016 23:23 (seven years ago) link

he released two albums simultaneously in '14, Bubblegum and Bulldozer, both great, esp the former.

never listened to that band before but they're singlehandedly responsible for all the delightful garbage australians who attended fest this year and drank shots out of their shoes

How did I miss the Tender Defender EP that came out this year? If you miss Latterman at all, this EP is for you.

i just saw latterman so it's hard to miss them but i didn't know about that ep!

tryin' to make me jealous

I'll make it out there one year.

holy shit, the new trust fund

if you raised belle & sebastian on a diet of emo and told them to write a bunch of 2-minute songs, the results couldn't have been much lovelier

imago, Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:09 (seven years ago) link

the new owel is really really good and pretty different from the last record

has anyone seen Appleseed Cast live recently? I want to see them but they're opening for Caspian (who seem like pleasantly average post-rock) and I'm not sure if it's worth only catching them in an opening slot.

i've never seen them live lol

oh here's my favorite song from the owel record

It's good!

More on a punk/post-punk tip but might appeal to emo folk: really enjoying the Super Unison album atm

playlist is updated.

my interest in twinkly topshelf bands is at an all time low but i really love this enemies song, prob bc it indulges in dream pop in a way i never hear from bands like this. album out dec. 9

i know this goes without saying but Joyce Manor is the besssssst baaaaaand

alpine static, Thursday, 8 December 2016 23:49 (seven years ago) link

I just listened to the Rosenstock for the first time today and I'm bit blown away. I'm looking forward to digging into it.

jmm, Thursday, 8 December 2016 23:55 (seven years ago) link

yeah he totally rules. especially if you're old like me.

we cool? is basically perfect. haven't made it all the way thru Worry yet

alpine static, Thursday, 8 December 2016 23:57 (seven years ago) link

Listening to the end really pays off. It closes with a fantastic medley of short songs.

I can already see myself memorizing all of the lyrics on this.

jmm, Friday, 9 December 2016 00:49 (seven years ago) link

I edited the medley into one track and use it for exercise and general uplift, it is the greatest inspiration ever

boys night out's black dogs should be somewhere in the middle of that list even though it's only an ep

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

i really like that trust fund album surprised u don't rate it.

i know collusion is frowned upon but let's all stan hard for the rosenstock on the year old poll

Mordy, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:26 (seven years ago) link

i don't think i ever heard the trust fund record

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:28 (seven years ago) link

Which are the more pop-punk albums in that list? I've only heard the Rosenstock.

jmm, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:33 (seven years ago) link

It's only about 25 minutes long, but it's lovely! They really upped their game this year.

Also here to echo what you're all saying about the new Into It. Over It. They nail their sentimental atmospheres in every song. None of it is filler.

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:36 (seven years ago) link

25 minutes! it's practically an EP and u kno how brad feels about EPs

Mordy, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:43 (seven years ago) link

I do not know...but I am sensing he is not a fan? They tried to make a full-length album, but their songs were just too cute.

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:52 (seven years ago) link

i love eps!

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:56 (seven years ago) link

almost none of the other albums in that list are pop-punk

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:56 (seven years ago) link

In addition to most of Brad's list, the releases by the following are also really worth hearing:

Katie Ellen (of Chumped)
The World is a Beautiful Place...
Martha
TTNG
Brightr
PUP

(Sorry for no album names - walking)

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:57 (seven years ago) link

The Joyce Manor is quite pop-punkish in parts.

xposts Oh yeah, forgot your love of Mesarthim. Does that thing Brand New did count as an EP?

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:59 (seven years ago) link

imo yeah

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

Martha sounds great. This is the kind of thing I'm a mood for now.

jmm, Friday, 9 December 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

i can't believe i'm seeing thursday AND dashboard confessional within the next month like wtf is it 2001 again??? am i 17 again!?!

Mordy, Friday, 9 December 2016 18:23 (seven years ago) link

So jealous.

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:41 (seven years ago) link

I love emo but I don't really "get" JEW. (shrugs) "It Matters" is nice.

Rosentock and Joyce Manor are prob the albums I've listened to most this year in any genre

Gonna give the Look Mexico album a try, glad someone is keeping the "ridiculous song titles" aspect alive

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:42 (seven years ago) link

That Look Mexico album is wonderful!! Can't remember if I've stressed my enthusiasm for it yet or not. That's top 5 emo of the year for me and favourite find itt.

dance band (tangenttangent), Friday, 9 December 2016 18:47 (seven years ago) link

for me JEW is almost exclusively about Bleed American

Mordy, Friday, 9 December 2016 19:00 (seven years ago) link

Understandable, though I think the entire Static Prevails/Clarity/Bleed American/Futures run is essential.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 9 December 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

you're all wrong, every jimmy eat world album is at least good if not great

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

xxxxxxxxxxxxpost

the Smith Street Band is pretty good like emo version of Royal Headache

anyway, there's something kind of cool when you hear a song and you know they just wrote the song that will close their sets for as long as they are a band

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 9 December 2016 20:55 (seven years ago) link

don't sleep on the BASEMENT album it is nothing you haven't heard before but it is delicious
