Is 'Kowalski' the one that goes "if you play with fire you're gonna get burned, some of my friends are gonna die young"?

Lionel Richie the Wardrobe (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 21 April 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

That's "Stuka", apparently.

Kowalski. By far.

I like those Nick Heyward singles, even if they're probably not up there with his peak material. I associate them with 'This Summer' by Squeeze as an attempt by a new wave artist to go britpop

a guy from the Television Personalities making a pop video with cameo appearances by Anna Friel and Graham Le Saux (and Alan McGee) seems like such a bizarre moment in pop culture history, impossible to imagine that happening just a few years earlier or later

Star was the last appearance of Augustus Pablo, right?

Kowalski. By far.

Yep, it happened. That video, I certainly saw it on some Saturday morning ITV kids show. It looked like a bet, or a returned favour: Give Ed Ball a big promo push this time around. Next time around, Creation was folding, they released three (four?) albums of his without much promotion, just to get them out there in time.

Kowalski. Sorry Boos, I prefer the album version

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Monday, 25 April 2016 12:02 (seven years ago) link

Kowalski is such a great bit of music, along with Stuka of course. I'm not the biggest Primal Scream fan but the whole turbo-dub roadmovie aesthetic is cool and sounds great and the fact they don't sound like a weak are indie band with a Stones fixation at this point really helps too.

three weeks pass...

Just realised, this is the third part five.

I don't see the Ed Ball thing as being strange in the slightest. Rather than just being "a guy from the Television Personalities", he was associated with a bunch of bands and labels that were all very influential on Alan McGee, and by this point had already released tons of albums and singles on Creation. He was in the Boo Radley's at this point wasn't he?

Also, I really like him! His time the TVPs was when they were good. The early Times records are great and his other stuff is diverse and sprawling and some of what I've heard is pretty cool. I didn't like that Mill Hill album though - his one and only "britpop" album. But lots of people were doing it. Didn't Billy Bragg have a britpop-sound on one two albums at the time? William Bloke? Ed Ball's previous album If A Man Ever Loved A Woman is good though.

xpost on Nick Heyward. They aren't my favorite singles in this poll, but I like that whole album a lot (The Apple Bed). I'm surprised that Goodbye Man wasn't a single, actually. It's a little frustrating that he essentially vanished afterwards (there's a bit more, and some of it is good, but it seems like he gave up after this). I just noticed that it got an expanded reissue in 2011.

i own a bunch of these. it really comes down to The Boo Radleys vs. Super Furry Animals. thou that Arnold EP is sort of great.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 May 2016 02:01 (seven years ago) link

the Arnold thing i was thinking of was called The Barn Tapes and not "Twist."

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 May 2016 02:04 (seven years ago) link

He was in the Boo Radley's at this point wasn't he?

no he was not. what you are thinking of is Sice solo stuff called Eggman. i do love me some of that Ed Ball stuff.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 May 2016 02:10 (seven years ago) link
