screwed up the spider man picture.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 June 2016 00:59 (seven years ago) link

i would love to vote for Bright Eyes but i know i probably can't.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:02 (seven years ago) link

Fuck The Streets

volumetric god rays (DJP), Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

Voting for the only album by SK that I like. Spoon seem likely to take this. I like them and all, but voting for them feels like voting for Talking Heads in the 80s.

dlp9001, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:08 (seven years ago) link

Between Turn on the Bright Lights, You Forgot It In People, Neon Golden and Lifted this feels like a list of albums that I really dug in my indie-loving 20s but which i fear haven't aged well.

The year I became really bored by Wilco, Beck and The Flaming Lips, after loving their albums from 1999. "Murray Street" was my answer at the time, probably still is.

geoffreyess, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:23 (seven years ago) link

girls can tell > kill the moonlight, although i didn't vote for either

mookieproof, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:24 (seven years ago) link

oh hell no, imo. Kill the Moonlight was my introduction to this band so it has its special place thou not my favorite Spoon.

Bee OK, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:29 (seven years ago) link

This list feels very fogeyish.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:53 (seven years ago) link

can't find anything I want to vote for here

imago, Thursday, 23 June 2016 01:54 (seven years ago) link

"Murray Street" is the best SY album post-Goo, I guess, so probably that. Though the real answer here should be FM Knives "Useless and Modern".

Bright Lights

Pentenema Karten, Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:13 (seven years ago) link

This does feel old and full of retreads. Younger me owned a handful of these but only really listened to flaming lips and wilco.

skip, Thursday, 23 June 2016 02:52 (seven years ago) link

Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 seemed really big to me at the time but I imagine it hasn't aged well

Neko Case - Blacklisted

riverine (map), Thursday, 23 June 2016 04:59 (seven years ago) link

The Disintegration Loops. even though i've listened to TOTBL and YHF and Geogaddi a million more times.

flappy bird, Thursday, 23 June 2016 05:04 (seven years ago) link

Remember when people liked The Streets? or Damien Rice?

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Thursday, 23 June 2016 05:31 (seven years ago) link

One of my least favourite years of the 00's, this.

Voted for The Private Press, which I still think is a very underrated record.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Thursday, 23 June 2016 06:54 (seven years ago) link

Weird year. Its best album (Justified) isn't listed here.

billstevejim, Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:29 (seven years ago) link

Wilco, Interpol, QOTSA, Broken Social Scene and Trail of Dead are the best options here.

billstevejim, Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:32 (seven years ago) link

oh look, McLusky Do Dallas missed out by 3 spots

imago, Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:36 (seven years ago) link

Fuck The Streets

― volumetric god rays (DJP),

First album still holds up imo, fuck everything after that though pretty much.

Will probably vote for the gorgeous Geogaddi. Might defect to The Private Press though, as I think it's quite underrated.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:49 (seven years ago) link

Ha, as I see Turrican does too.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 23 June 2016 07:49 (seven years ago) link

This list makes me feel old like no other. Should probably be YHF for sheer impact on me (at the time) but on reflection it'll probably Basinski.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Thursday, 23 June 2016 08:23 (seven years ago) link

Neon Golden. Still holds up. One of my favorite albums ever. When One With the Freaks begins, after the more difficult middle third. It's bliss.

Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 08:41 (seven years ago) link

Talking of Neon Golden, I once used 'you're the colour, the movement and the spin' in what I thought was a quite seductive email. The girl responded with 'are you comparing me to a washing machine?' So that went well.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Thursday, 23 June 2016 09:00 (seven years ago) link

i swear i only clicked on this because it was a kneejerk reaction to a year i know well but i have to ask at this point what "acclaimed music" is and why their lists are so fucking awful. THIS WAS NOT 2002.

rockist times, rockist critics, lex

imago, Thursday, 23 June 2016 10:11 (seven years ago) link

ilx used to be about burning this shit down

everything dies

the hallouminati (lex pretend), Thursday, 23 June 2016 10:14 (seven years ago) link

tbf i think ilx has largely succeeded wrt 2016-era music, these are all low-key nostalgia exercises and nostalgia for the critical current of the time more than the music

imago, Thursday, 23 June 2016 10:19 (seven years ago) link

Not a v interesting list. Will prob vote Disintegration Loops or Neon Golden (which was no "Shrink").

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 23 June 2016 10:56 (seven years ago) link

IIRC 2002 ILX at the time was deeply into more than half of this list

volumetric god rays (DJP), Thursday, 23 June 2016 12:44 (seven years ago) link

Sleater-Kinney, my favourite album from them.

jmm, Thursday, 23 June 2016 12:49 (seven years ago) link

I loved the Bright Eyes album at the time but must have sold it. I'm afraid to listen to it again.

jmm, Thursday, 23 June 2016 12:53 (seven years ago) link

Basinski. Still listen to quite a lot of these occasionally tbh.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 23 June 2016 13:01 (seven years ago) link

Neko in a walk

How Butch, I mean (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 23 June 2016 13:05 (seven years ago) link

I still love Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Pretty bad list otherwise

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 June 2016 13:15 (seven years ago) link

Some good shit, lots of blehhhhh shit. Broken Social Scene is probably the only one of the lot that I still listen to with any regularity. Holds up surprisingly well but don't know if I'd consider it the best.

(Oh and actually I guess I listen to Norah Jones with some regularity, as well, here is my hip and cool card, feel free to destroy it however you choose.)

There must be some magic clue inside these gentle walls (Old Lunch), Thursday, 23 June 2016 13:17 (seven years ago) link

I don't even wanna know what the beef w streets is since first two albums are both stellar, voting OPM

niels, Thursday, 23 June 2016 15:31 (seven years ago) link

Norah jones alb also perfect

niels, Thursday, 23 June 2016 15:32 (seven years ago) link

I still listen to a few of these albums, but a lot of them have not aged so well--Flaming Lips, Interpol, 2 Many DJs and Libertines are examples (though the best songs on those records still connect). Here are my current favorites from this list:

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes
Sonic Youth - Murray Street
Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
DJ Shadow - The Private Press
Neko Case - Blacklisted

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Thursday, 23 June 2016 15:36 (seven years ago) link

Going to vote for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot here.

the future is now, Friday, 24 June 2016 00:31 (seven years ago) link

Going with Neko - that record is still a remarkable mash of country, indie and punk.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 24 June 2016 00:47 (seven years ago) link

um obviously broken social scene

j. winters (josh), Friday, 24 June 2016 00:58 (seven years ago) link

Turn On the Bright Lights: dreadful lyrics, humourless vocals, very sporadic hooks. The guitar playing is good, sure.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 24 June 2016 01:46 (seven years ago) link

Voted Source Tags. Still love ToD even though they're terribly uncool now.

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 24 June 2016 01:48 (seven years ago) link

This is a pretty weak list even by canon standards though.

ultros ultros-ghali, Friday, 24 June 2016 01:48 (seven years ago) link

It doesn't have the same kind of massive releases two previous lists

niels, Friday, 24 June 2016 05:56 (seven years ago) link

as the two previous

niels, Friday, 24 June 2016 05:57 (seven years ago) link

this will probably be the weakest year of these lists for this decade.

Bee OK, Friday, 24 June 2016 14:03 (seven years ago) link

I loved a lot of these records when they came out (I was 21/22 so they were right in my wheelhouse), but S-K is definitely the one I've listened to the most over the past few years, though admittedly their resurgence had a lot to do with that. I didn't even listen to Spoon back then but now they definitely hold up better than most things I really dug at the time. Haven't revisited BSS, Notwist, Wilco, Sigur Ros for awhile but I imagine I'd encounter diminishing returns to varying degrees.

evol j, Friday, 24 June 2016 17:32 (seven years ago) link

Spoon seem likely to take this. I like them and all, but voting for them feels like voting for Talking Heads in the 80s.

i would be very surprised if Spoon won this. the Talking Heads reference is OTM.

Clay, Saturday, 25 June 2016 05:12 (seven years ago) link

Really tough choice between the following:

1 72 Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
7 317 Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
8 334 Beck - Sea Change
10 493 Sigur Rós - ( )
11 593 Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
12 601 Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
26 1504 DJ Shadow - The Private Press
29 1556 Doves - The Last Broadcast

But went with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, because really.

Austin, Sunday, 26 June 2016 03:36 (seven years ago) link

yankee hotel foxtrot remains a perfect record to me.

need to hear that roots album

2002 was really a poor year for mainstream hip-hop I suppose?

Van Horn Street, Monday, 27 June 2016 01:10 (seven years ago) link

guessing from the 2000 and 2001 polls, a hip-hop record need almost legendary status before featuring in an acclaimedmusic top 30.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 27 June 2016 01:15 (seven years ago) link

At the time lots of these albums seemed monumental and I listened to them a ton. But I've barely played any of them in years, save for Interpol (I listen to it quite a lot still) and maybe Wilco and Sigur Ros.

Sam Weller, Monday, 27 June 2016 10:36 (seven years ago) link

I felt like this was a truly great year for singles and radio but albums didn't match them for intensity, at least in an "obvious classic".

Love The Streets, Missy Elliott, Sonic Youth, Boards of Canada, Sleater-Kinney, 2 Many DJs, DJ Shadow.

The most obvious classics - in both the subjective and objective senses - not here are Metro Area's album and Michael Mayer's Immer mix. There are people who dislike both but I feel like both of these have a pretty rock solid stature within dance music circles.

For me the private classics not listed are Tweet's Southern Hummingbird, Amerie's All I Have, Clipse's Lord Willin, Elephant Man's Higher Level, Sean Paul's Dutty Rock, Farben's Textstar and MRI's All That Glitters. Also I never listen to it as an album but JT's singles from Justified are total classic.

The Disintegration Loops is the best work of art made in response to 9/11. Not only is the concept brilliant - intellectually and emotionally - the pieces themselves beautiful, and more so than anything else I've ever seen or heard, it evokes exactly the mood of Manhattan in the fall of 2001.

I'll never understand what people hear in Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I've given that record a couple of chances and I find it to be mostly dull.

Eminem - The Eminem Show 0

Proud of us.

I like the fast(er) catchy stuff on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Heavy Metal Drummer, Pot Kettle Black

brimstead, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 01:36 (seven years ago) link

YHF one of the those records that if the melodies work for you the whole thing is majestic, if they don't it falls apart. Sometimes it is just about tone, I guess.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 01:51 (seven years ago) link

otm. love YHF, everything from Jim O's mix to the lyrics to the atmosphere and yeah the tunes. Summerteeth, YHF, and A Ghost is Born are amazing to me, but everything else they've ever done has left me cold.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 04:10 (seven years ago) link

yeah this was def a weird year, but still very good for singles

Amerie "Why Don't We Fall In Love"
Big Tymers "Still Fly"

Cam'Ron "Oh Boy" & "Hey Ma"
