I'll do the album results first:

hah, I get it now
I didn't vote in the album poll, but it would probably just be chronological. Hardcores do mess that up though. Can't decide if the 1st or 2nd is better.
New Traditionalists is a bit underrated, I think. Needs more teeth but that middle stretch - "Going Under", "Race of Doom", and "Love Without Anger" - is gold. I think "Race of Doom" is one of Devo's great underrated songs, my roommate would frequently complain about how stupidly catchy it was.
― frogbs, Thursday, 14 July 2016 13:54 (eight years ago) link
in the 33⅓ book on Freedom of Choice, Robert Margouleff says he was disappointed that Devo didn't ask him back to co-produce New Traditionalists, and that he thought he could have improved it:
“To this day, I don’t understand why they didn’t ask me to do the next record,” says Bob Margouleff. “I think they figured they had learned enough from that experience to do it themselves. And I don’t fault them for it, but I think I could have made a much hotter record than the first one. But they chose to do it on their own, and the results speak for themselves. It’s not that I haven’t offered.
― soref, Thursday, 14 July 2016 14:10 (eight years ago) link
sorry, I mean Freedom of Choice = live band that uses synthsOh No = studio/electronic act
with New Traditionalists neither quite one thing or the other

― mark e, Thursday, 14 July 2016 14:18 (eight years ago) link
yeah I dunno if it's the transitional aspect of it that bothers me, more that it seems to be mastered for cassette. just sounds flat.

also wtf at not including "Mecha-Mania Boy". I would've voted for it too but I forgot it existed.
Oh No! also has a great B-side - "Find Out"

genuinely surprised that oh, no! placed above new traditionalists - and with 3 first place votes! though it's got some classic material ("big mess"!), it's the point where the cracks really start to show: uneven songwriting, palpable lack of enthusiasm.
― oculus lump (contenderizer), Thursday, 14 July 2016 15:27 (eight years ago) link
Yeah but it is consistently fun. I can see it appealing to those who are in it just for the catchy tunes. Sadly it prevents this from going in chronological order, which is really as it should be - though I would argue that FoC > Duty

there was one vote apiece for Hardcore Devo Live, Recombo DNA, Devo Live: The Mongoloid Years, EZ Listening, Greatest Hits, Greatest Misses and Hardcore Devo Volume Two (I had one vote for the 2cd set that collects vol 1 & 2 of Hardcore, and added this to the points for Hardcore Devo Volume One). no votes for any of the post-Oh No studio albums.

its an absolutely perfect album.

i am curious how many songs from the debut will be in the top 10, could be one of those polls where one album totally dominates the upper reaches
― Best Beloved Trump-Pence (some dude), Thursday, 14 July 2016 17:25 (eight years ago) link
I've always thought that the sound on New Traditionalists is kind of flat and drab compared to it's predecessor. it seems like kind of a transitional album as well, halfway between Freedom of Choice where they were a live band that incorporates synths on Oh No, It's Devo where they felt like a fully fledged electronic/studio deal
From Wiki:
New Traditionalists was recorded on a then-new brand of 2" tape from 3M. Unfortunately, when Devo began recording the vocals for the album, the edges of the tape had begun to disintegrate. After asking Warner Bros. if they could start over and re-record the album from scratch and being denied, Devo transferred all the work they had done to digital reel-to-reel tape and finished the album via digital recording at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, California.[4] All of this resulted in New Traditionalists having a murkier and darker sound than previous Devo albums.
FWIW, the current CD remaster sounds fantastic, and is bolstered by some strong bonus tracks, most of which are Oh No... outtakes from the Recombo collection.

The burying of "Turn Around" is weird..."Whip It" b-side, covered by Nirvana, only album appearance is Greatest Misses, currently available on itunes individually or as part of a "digital 45' w/the ol' topside.

I don't really mind that much about them not crediting Bent Bolt and the Nuts given how much of their material is reworking and combining bits of art/music/adverts etc. I like how they take the implicit creepyness of the idea of a servile + amorous robot, and run with it

Stoked to chew through this poll; tried to cram listening to enough of the Hardcore comps to feel like I could put an informed ballot together but didn't quite make it. "Gates of Steel" would have been my #1, eh.
First came across "Snoball" via the sample in Felix da Housecat's "Sweetfrosti":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieu959PeBjU
Hadn't realised that he'd sampled "That's Good" six years earlier w/"Control Freaq" (or that Devo had been sampled by, uh, Colleen Green & Cut Copy).

I think the only album that had zero votes for any of its tracks (unless you count Adventures of the Smart Patrol) was Something Else for Everybody which is a shame as it's good, maybe better than Something for Everybody. Faster, faster...
In this hour of darknessJust before I say goodbyeSmoke a teflon cigaretteI chew my cyanide CloretsI write down a fake confessionAnd I send it off to you
You did it
Swim up the riverShoot them my headBury the hatchetIn the fertile riverbed
Drive my car over a cliffSee myself lying deadThey tortured meWith the cable tv
In this hour of darknessEverything's turned grayNow it's time for all good thingsTo pass away
Don't ask me why, why, whyWe all must go, go, go go go
You did it, faster
Now the tears run from my eyesBut it seems like there's no running from the liesMy heart, my poor heart plays tricks on my mind

This poll followed the same pattern as the Van Halen poll - every song from the 1978 debut album makes Top 40*, nothing makes Top 40 from any album post-'84 (Van Halen) or '82 (Devo)
*(in Van Halen's case one song made #41)
― Josefa, Monday, 18 July 2016 02:16 (eight years ago) link
Correction: I think about three Van Halen songs post '84 made their list, something like that

Faster and Faster is great, I couldn't find room for it on my ballot but it's impressive that it managed to pick up three votes considering its relative obscurity. I think it was recorded around the time of the Oh No It's Devo album (it seems to have evolved into Luv-Luv which came out in 1983, so it must be before that), you're right about underexplored, it feels like another direction they could have gone in as they moved into the mid-80s, but didn't

Jocko Homo was my #1, so I don't know if my ballot got left out, or just the first place marker got forgotten. Either way, I don't think it changes the results much. Thanks for running it!

gah, sorry - I forgot to add the first place marker, the only first place for Jocko Homo. Your ballot was definitely included though!

brilliant poll soref - ta for doing this.
while all this was going on i remembered a random 12" single that i picked up years ago that i seemed to recall having some DEVO involvement. took some digging out, but i found it on thursday.its not been mentioned in the thread to date ..

thanks for doing this. can't argue with the results, though I was surprised to see "Gut Feeling" only get #6 - thought that and "Smart Patrol" were gonna be 1 and 2

I've been delving into deep Devo cuts for this and this Newbeats cover is by far the worst pre-90s Devo song I have ever heard

I missed this poll completely. I'm kind of obsessed with Cold War right now so I would've voted had I known.
