I ended up not getting around to submitting a ballot for this one - things got in the way - but looking forward to seeing how these results pan out.

No way is 'All Around The World' the worst Oasis song, though.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 August 2016 00:29 (seven years ago) link

I think I've said something like this before, but if I were making the Oasis biopic, it would begin with a scene of Noel and Liam as kids, Liam feeling sad for being beaten up just because he acted like an asshole, Noel cheering him up by playing a new song he just wrote 'All around the world / gotta spread the word / you know it's gonna be okay.' 'You know Liam, one day we are going to be Rock and Roll stars, and we're going to turn this song into the biggest song ever. At several of the early shows they play stripped down versions of the song, at the recording of both Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory they're asked if they want to include the anthem. 'Not yet' says Noel. 'Not until we have the budget to make it fucking right.' The film culminates with a painstaking reconstruction of the recording process of All Around the World, done in black and white, cinema verité style, but also imitating the famous bell-making scene from Andrei Rublev (it goes without saying that my biopic is a 3 hour monster like Nixon or something). Final scene of film is a one-take of Noel, dejected, angry at Liam, coked out of his mind, feeling the dream has gone to shit, putting on the song, the masterpiece he dreamt about since he was a kid, and over 9 painfull minutes realizing just how bad it is, just how much he fucked it up. For the last couple of minutes he is bawling his eyes out, lying on the floor, snot coming out of his nose. Roll credits, soundtracked by Country House.

xxpost:

I agree, 'Sunday Morning Call' is a really awful song. Probably their weakest ever single, when I think about it.

AATW made my main ballot but lolllll at Fred's film treatment.

Silence, followed by unintelligible stammering. (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 25 August 2016 01:00 (seven years ago) link

1. I would certainly watch that film, and you should make it.

2. I threw AATW down as my worst song. There are probably "worse" songs on the later albums that I couldn't put myself through, but as a harbinger of THE END that goes on for so fucking long (and a fucking reprise) AATW is an importantly bad song.

I'd totally watch that film!

There are worse songs on later albums, without a doubt. 'All Around The World' was one of the contenders for my main ballot.

Holding back on "Supersonic" comments, waiting for it in the main tracks rollout. But thinking of it as a debut, it really is a great calling card for the band. No "well, let's break you guys in with an easygoing crossover number, have you heard of Hootie and the Blowfish?" here.

The single cover is a homage to the incident where Ringo Starr briefly left the Beatles during the recording of The White Album; after the other three Beatles members successfully persuaded him to return, George Harrison decorated Ringo's drum kit in red, white, and blue flowers to show their appreciation.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:30 (seven years ago) link

"Supersonic" was written and recorded in a single day at The Pink Museum recording studio in Liverpool. The band were there to record "I Will Believe" but first, as a warm up, they started jamming together. Soon Noel Gallagher was humming a melody over McCarroll and Bonehead's rhythm until he called the jam to a halt as it was time to start recording "I Will Believe". The intended song was not going too well so it was decided that they work on something new, based on a jam they had had earlier that day. The recording was completed in 11 hours and it was never remixed.

The identity of "Elsa" has caused confusion. The lyrics say: She done it with a doctor/On a helicopter/she sniffin' in a tissue/Sellin' the Big Issue. Gallagher has remarked: "Someone told me "Supersonic" was about teenage prostitution. Shit!". It has since been revealed that Elsa was a nine-stone rottweiler with a flatulence problem. The dog belonged to the sound engineer Dave Scott and was in the studio on the day the song was written, hence the line "she's into Alka Seltzer".

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:40 (seven years ago) link

Supersonic is so obviously the best.

Noel claims he wrote it on a Les Paul guitar that Johnny Marr sent to him, since he had few guitars available to him at the time. On the Definitely Maybe DVD, he also notes that he took Marr's guitar out of the case, sat down, and "the song wrote itself". Gallagher wrote it about his girlfriend at the time - Louise Jones and the song was written about their stormy relationship. He described them as "soulmates" and when they finally split up in June 1994, Noel said 'I don't think I'll ever get over it.'

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:58 (seven years ago) link

It is featured on their debut album Definitely Maybe,on the "Whatever" single, and on the "Champagne Supernova" US single. Also in the Stop the Clocks interview, Noel claimed that he was told to release it as a fifth single from Definitely Maybe, but Gallagher refused, arguing, "You can't have five [singles] off a debut album." Furthermore it is claimed to be Paul McCartney's favorite song by Oasis in the same interview.

Sorry to have missed the climax of the rollout, but a fun poll all the way - got me listening to these guys and having their songs stuck in my head again in a way I really would not have seen myself ever doing again. I had "Supersonic" #1 but can't complain at the results at all - - - though a bit sad "All Around the World" couldn't crack the top 50. "Some Might Say" making it to #3 is maybe the biggest surprise to me, not that I dislike it (had it at #8) but would not have figured it for a consensus pick over such celebrated cuts as "Acquiesce" (one that I never have gone for, really).

I tried to listen to BHN yesterday. oh what a mistake...
I was depressed, bored and exhausted after a few tracks and couldn't even finish it (but I made sure to check at least a part of all the songs).
it sounds terrible, the songs are terrible... awful.
I saw an interview of NG saying when they were signed, he had already written all the songs for the first 3 albums : all the best ones were put on DM, those that couldn't fit in on the first album were on What's the Story and... the remaining trash was on BHN... and you can tell !
It may have been reduced to an average single : "d'ya know what I mean" / "all around the world" (interlude) / "stand by me"...

i'm pretty sure Noel was talking about the first two albums and all the B-Sides or The Masterplan. Be Here Now is the after fame album.
