Acquiesce was my number 1.

MarkoP, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:32 (seven years ago) link

Some of the lyrics were written when I was out of it. There's the words: 'Someday you will find me/ Caught beneath a landslide/ In a Champagne Supernova in the sky'. That's probably as psychedelic as I'll ever get. It means different things when I'm in different moods. When I'm in a bad mood being caught beneath a landslide is like being suffocated. The song is a bit of an epic. It's about when you're young and you see people in groups and you think about what they did for you and they did nothing. As a kid, you always believed the Sex Pistols were going to conquer the world and kill everybody in the process. Bands like The Clash just petered out. Punk rock was supposed to be the revolution but what did it do? Fuck all. The Manchester thing was going to be the greatest movement on earth but it was fuck all. When we started we decided we weren't going to do anything for anybody, we just thought we'd leave a bunch of great songs. But some of the words are about nothing. One is about Bracket The Butler who used to be on Camberwick Green, or Chipley or Trumpton or something. He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn't think of anything that rhymed with 'hall' apart from 'cannonball'. so I wrote 'Slowly walking down the hall/ Faster than a cannonball' and people were like, 'Wow, man'. There's also the line 'Where were you while we were getting high?' because that's what we always say to each other. But the number of people who've started clubs called Champagne Supernova is fucking unbelievable. And the album isn't even released yet.

The sleeve artwork was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in north London. The hand holding the frame is that of art director Brian Cannon. The original idea was to have Liam in the frame before Noel vetoed that idea whilst the shoot was taking place. Instead a female figure was deemed necessary and Anita Heryet, a Creation Records employee, was asked to stand in as cover star for the shot.

"Wonderwall" was such a massive hit, might have been their biggest, that i'm surprised the it couldn't crack the Top 5.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

wonderwall feels so static, i guess it fits with liam's completely bored vocal though

it's definitely their track with the biggest legacy though

ufo, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:00 (seven years ago) link

YES! Thank fuck this isn't anywhere near the Top 5. Even LIAM hates this song these days.

I've probably heard 'Don't Look Back In Anger' as many times as 'Wonderwall', but where the opening chords to 'Wonderwall' immediately make me think "oh, for fucks sake, this again", I'm still not bored of 'Don't Look Back In Anger'

The single cover is a homage to the incident where Ringo Starr briefly left the Beatles during the recording of The White Album; after the other three Beatles members successfully persuaded him to return, George Harrison decorated Ringo's drum kit in red, white, and blue flowers to show their appreciation.

another surprise, thought this would be the number one.

"Supersonic" was written and recorded in a single day at The Pink Museum recording studio in Liverpool. The band were there to record "I Will Believe" but first, as a warm up, they started jamming together. Soon Noel Gallagher was humming a melody over McCarroll and Bonehead's rhythm until he called the jam to a halt as it was time to start recording "I Will Believe". The intended song was not going too well so it was decided that they work on something new, based on a jam they had had earlier that day. The recording was completed in 11 hours and it was never remixed.

The identity of "Elsa" has caused confusion. The lyrics say: She done it with a doctor/On a helicopter/she sniffin' in a tissue/Sellin' the Big Issue. Gallagher has remarked: "Someone told me "Supersonic" was about teenage prostitution. Shit!". It has since been revealed that Elsa was a nine-stone rottweiler with a flatulence problem. The dog belonged to the sound engineer Dave Scott and was in the studio on the day the song was written, hence the line "she's into Alka Seltzer".

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:40 (seven years ago) link

Supersonic is so obviously the best.

simmel, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:46 (seven years ago) link

Prediction: 'Some Might Say', 'Slide Away' and 'Live Forever', in that order.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:49 (seven years ago) link

Noel claims he wrote it on a Les Paul guitar that Johnny Marr sent to him, since he had few guitars available to him at the time. On the Definitely Maybe DVD, he also notes that he took Marr's guitar out of the case, sat down, and "the song wrote itself". Gallagher wrote it about his girlfriend at the time - Louise Jones and the song was written about their stormy relationship. He described them as "soulmates" and when they finally split up in June 1994, Noel said 'I don't think I'll ever get over it.'

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:58 (seven years ago) link

It is featured on their debut album Definitely Maybe,on the "Whatever" single, and on the "Champagne Supernova" US single. Also in the Stop the Clocks interview, Noel claimed that he was told to release it as a fifth single from Definitely Maybe, but Gallagher refused, arguing, "You can't have five [singles] off a debut album." Furthermore it is claimed to be Paul McCartney's favorite song by Oasis in the same interview.

'Live Forever' would have made my ballot, admittedly. I'm more surprised about 'Some Might Say' being in the Top 3, if only because there's been about 20 songs that have placed below it that are superior to it.

So, unless I'm mistaken, the first song on the list not from Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory era is at 23. That's pretty remarkable, though perhaps not surprising. And it's a song from Dig Out Your Soul, which might be a bit more surprising.

I'm sure it's been mentioned in the noms thread but the way Liam sings "SUNSHEEEIIINE" is dylanesquely brilliant and brings a smile to my face
