Yeeeah, Cell Scape

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

I think that the later Melt Banana albums might be more solid but it really comes down to Cell Scape having such an exciting sequence at the start.

Art Tatum & Ben Webster - Art Tatum meets Ben Webster
Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster - Coleman Hawkins encounters Ben Webster
Gerry Mulligan & Ben Webster - Gerry Mulligan meets Ben Webster
Ben Webster & Oscar Peterson - Ben Webster meets Oscar Peterson
Ben Webster & Johnny Hodges - The Complete 1960 jazz Cellar Session

i much prefer "The Brute" as a collaborator rather than a leader, he has such a godlike natural style he doesn't need to burdened with anything else imo

Renaissance's first line up are also pretty decent.
They were initially a Yardbirds spin off but I don't think any of that line up lasted into the better known one from the 70s.
Keith Relf and his sister started looking into blending stuff together with classical and folk influences alongside Jim Mcarty the Yardbirds drummer.

I have a Sanctuary compilation 2cd that has some nice stuff on it.

the comsat angels sleep no more

this has been creeping upwards into my top 10... so great, at the edge of despondent post-JD goth but with so much clarity and life. and the massive drumming is incredible. just a spectacular job all around (production, songwriting, playing, singing).

yellow magic orchestra - bgm

um this one's creeping up there too! it pushes the boundaries of experimentation w/r/t synth pop while remaining perfectly accessible. not a single unnecessary note.

brimstead, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

absolutely - I always liked that album but somehow during one 45-minute drive the whole thing completely clicked for me and I've never heard it the same way since

definitely checking out the other albums on that list now

b-52s - bouncing off the satellites

This is an interesting opinion, one I don't think is widely shared.

for sure, a hugely inspirational album to me, from a creative standpoint

brimstead, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 21:05 (seven years ago) link

xpost Yeah, generally Bouncing off the Satellites is really underrated but I could never put it ahead of The B-52's, Cosmic Thing or Wild Planet.

Got a weird spaciousness.

He is so great, I only just got into him last year with his zooid In for a penny album, which I thought was pretty great. But much of his 90's/00's output is amazing.
