No love for this guy? New album is pretty upbeat. His Burning Man sunrises mixes the last couple years are also a must listen.

Is this guy super popular? And if so, how? Because the number of views his first album has on YouTube surprises me.
― MarkoP, Friday, 30 September 2016 21:35 (seven years ago) link
Far more popular than a number of other artists discussed here it feels, but I have a west coast bias perhaps.
His style is a bit "easy listening" at times, but he's certainly worth noting.

i was surprised by his popularity when he last played here. it's definitely a bit too safe, square, and 'indietronic' for my tastes.

Coming up next, it's local on the 8s...

Yeah I liked the last album ok but when I saw a bunch of mentions for the new one on FB I was pretty surprised that people care enough to get excited about him.

His stuff's pleasant, hardly top tier though.

I'm not normally awakened at 5 in the morning to rant on Tycho, but I think Tycho is a harbinger of a suspicious wave of major-key optimism that I see plaguing things out there. I'd like to say it was Lester Bangs who said that new age music is fascist, but it's 5 in the morning and I can't remember. Anyway, I think the warning isn't that new age music is fascist, but that it'll be used by fascists. Ten years from now, the oligarchs of a ruined earth will burn their enemies at Burning Man 2026 and you'll earn your citizenship by serving their customized Airstreams. Every morning at 6am your workcamp's wake up music is Tycho.

i own a tycho shirt. not one that advertises his music, but he used to do some graphic design on the side and i liked this one:

but now i feel like at some point i gave $18 to the new fascist age regime

Music gets repurposed as it does but the guy himself seems to be better than some. After the Oakland disaster I caught some comments from him about how much he owed to warehouse shows and spaces, and he both played the high profile benefit show and included at least a couple of tracks by deceased artists from the fire in his set IIRC.

Anyway while not disagreeing with Elvis's general impression per se I'd think the description applies to M83 more.

a Tycho track came up on shuffle last night in the car, and I asked myself, "why did I download this?"

I like "Local" quite a bit, a harmless piece of sonic candy
― calstars, Thursday, 22 December 2016 19:33 (seven years ago) link
I'm still trying to figure out the points to triangulate in on - M83 certainly operates in this space (and truthfully it was the new Ullrich Schnauss album that gave me the workcamp wakeup vision) - it seems there no other emotion at stake than trying to fill stadium paganism with awe. I'll even throw out a mimetic conspiracy theory between this and the “wa-oh-wa-oh” pop songs that launched a hundred thinkpieces.
I really like the Tycho design sense, but umm, erm, lots of movements have good graphic style.

i like tycho! but...it's pretty samey. i went to see him live w/band because a friend is a big fan
elvis, the parallel that struck me live was not the new wa-oh-wa-oh pop stuff but actually U2, it has that kind of broad inspirational sweep, and honestly the guitar dude cops Edge moves all day
i could kinda see what you are getting at but i'm not sure tycho is the one to hang it on
i listen to tycho a decent amount, good work music and i like his melodic sensibility and sense of composition compared to others in this lite new agey electronic thing (though i served with hatchback and you, sir, are no hatchback)...biggest criticism might be that every song sounds the same p much

Edge moves?
― calstars, Friday, 23 December 2016 19:25 (seven years ago) link
his live guitar player plays digi delay lines that sound exactly like U2 on every song p much

Tycho is indeed samey, but not psychically sterile in the way that upbeat neo-fascist pop would be (at least in my head). No doubt Bill Hicks would enjoy it on mushrooms. He's just found his formula and is just relentlessly pressing repeat on it because it sells. He's like a west coast Ratatat or something.
For those that dig Tycho, Manual (Jonas Munk) is more talented in every facet with a similar, yet more diverse sonic palette.

i don't even mind tycho's saminess, i tend to like his stuff for work or cleaning the house or something and it's generally a pleasant vibe w/enough hooks and good melodies to keep me from getting board.
it's got an easiness about it that probably makes ppl underestimate what a good craftsman he is.

Pretty soul-less music created for graphic designers by a graphic designer - not a bad thing in small doses.
