there's an insidious trap here, in that many people want to be seen as individuals first rather than simply as arbitrary representations of any particular class or group. yet judging someone as an individual allows the arbiter extraordinary latitude in exercising systemic prejudice; claiming that a person was rejected due to their individual qualities rather than their gender or race or whatever is usually at least a plausible defense.

I had considered just posting the article to the no boys thread, but felt that it would make for a better discussion here on ilm

romance in general, insecurities, poetry, chess, cooking, skinny jeans...

I got around to reading it and I thought it was a good/necessary read. This was something I struggled with/thought about a lot when I was traipsing through Brooklyn/NY DIY scene a few years back. I just like it when these articles give people a forum to speak for themselves and share, tbh. I have noticed a lot of my non-white/cis/male musician FB friends have been pretty straightforward about calling out discriminatory BS on Facebook and I'm all for that.

Like Whiney, I kind of have an 800 word response to this but I'm mostly happy that it's just out there. Up for a lively discussion though!
