inb4:

Blue Nile - Hats (1989) is missing from the list which recent research has proven it to be one of ILM's favorite records from the 80's. I honestly haven't heard it enough so maybe one day I'll join the cult.

Classic 80's hip hop missing: Straight Outta Compton, Paid in Full, Strictly Business and Raising Hell.

Other important omissions which I would reconsider changing in further revisions: Prince, ESG, William Onyeabor, Fela Kuti, Nuno Canavarro, Einstürzende Neubauten, Smiths, Husker Du, Jandek... get acquainted with punk and metal of the decade.

These would all be candidates for my own top 50:

Alvin Lucier - I Am Sitting in a Room (1981)
Arthur Russell - World of Echo (1986)
David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive (1987)
Glenn Branca - The Ascension (1981)
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (1985)
Manuel Göttsching - E2-E4 (1984)
Talking Heads - Remain in Light (1980)
Tom Tom Club - Tom Tom Club (1981)
Virgo - Virgo (1989)

All canonical for me: Alvin Lucier, Arthur Russell, Cure, David Sylvian, De La Soul, Fall, G500, Glenn Branca, Kate Bush, Kraftwerk, Göttsching, Pixies, Talking Heads, Young Marble Giants.

Ultimately a toss-up between Alvin Lucier, Kate Bush and Göttsching. Went with the latter.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

I honestly don't know that much metal. I know Metallica and Iron Maiden where like huge in the 80's but I'm not really into that sort of metal... I don't hate it but it's not my thing... I like my metal slower and weirder perhaps?

Maybe give me some recommendations? For reference I love Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard - Dopethrone is one of my favorite albums of the 00's... from the 80's Saint Vitus has caught my attention, so you could say I'm more into'Sabbath-inspired' sort of metal... monolithic, blues-y, slow, heavy, doom-y. Anything in the decade that you would recommend?

A friend who knows the sort of metal I listen to recommended me these albums:

Warning - s/t
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Pagan Altar - s/t

What you say?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

Hmmm. My main thought was that there was a big 'Reign in Blood' shaped hole, but that doesn't sound like your thing, really - and indeed the 80s were a decade of thrash if anything so not a huge amount of that monolithic stuff you reference.

For the record, though, I reckon:
Melvins
Flipper
Celtic Frost (more death metal, but hugely influential in the doom genre)
Trouble
Pentagram
The Obsessed

Cracking list, btw.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Tuesday, 11 October 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

yeah definitely check out Pentagram

Hope you enjoy! Is there a megathread that gathers every personal year-end / decade lists on this board? I'm sure I'm not the only one in here that makes lists and I'd love to see them, great way to find great music you didn't know. I'm not well versed in hip hop and metal per example or my tastes in the genre are that of an outsider, would love to see lists of people with actual knowledge in them.

I'm surprised you rate They Could've Been Bigger Than The Beatles above The Painted Word, or even Mummy Your Not Watching Me. Also, I consider it a compilation but maybe that's wrong.

everything, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 21:30 (seven years ago) link

I don't think it's a compilation per se as the songs that were released before were re-recorded for the album.

I'd actually rate ...And Don't the Kids Just Love It over those two! I'd rate them as:

They Could've Been Bigger Than The Beatles
...And Don't the Kids Just Love It
The Painted Word
Mummy Your Not Watching Me
Privilege

I like the Bigger than the Beatles one the best because it sounds sloppier than the others. But that would actually be one of the lowest ranked albums in my top 50.

I would've picked Twin Infinitives by Royal Trux as a substitute in a heartbeat if it was a 1989 album.

brimstead, Sunday, 30 October 2016 02:02 (seven years ago) link

Mileage may vary depending on how much you like 80's twee and jangle rock but Dolly Mixture are one of the best 'unknown' bands of the decade for me and it feels almost unjust their obscurity because they made some very charming music imho, another place, another time they would've been bigger and have at least another two albums.

Anyhoo... they're not on spotify but most of their songs are on youtube. Here's Demonstration Tapes:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wjqbC5UzYg

Also recommend hearing their singles and EPs there's not much but whatever there is, is pretty cool:

Baby it's you (cover) - not as good as the Smith one but a good update.

Everything and More:

I don't know there's honestly so much good songs from them that I can't pick one. Find this and give it one listen:

Mariah - うたかたの日々 [Utakata no Hibi] (1983) 0 - really interesting album, not really my bag, though.

I have the Mariah 2016 reissue on vinyl and some tracks sound even better played at 33 1/3! You really need to listen to it... I'd been looking for almost 8 years for a copy so I'm very happy it got reissued.
I obviously don't know enough japanese new wave to call it the best album of the genre but it might as well be.

Shinzo No Tobira is the obvious highlight because it sounds as a youtube comment puts it 'japanese grimes before grimes existed' ... Metro Area's Miura (which ended up being the best song of the 00's of ResidentAdvisor) also seems to rip off that bouncy bass... no idea if its accidental--- my point is that it sounds decades ahead of its time... song could be released anytime in the past 20 years and it would still be an obvious highlight of the year. Start with that one as its the most pop one and it will sort of unravel the goodness in the whole album eventually.

I actually uploaded the Shinzo No Tobira track to youtube in 2010 before the new label bought the rights to it... I don't make money off of it obviously, I just got a message from the label telling me that any money from ads would go to them and they preferred using my video with 300,000 views and 6 years online than taking it down and putting up a new one... of course I complied and I'm happy to help bring any bit of attention I can to this album:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRgLhEGEetc

Btw if you find music like this from Japan mildly intriguing, this list called 'Fourth World Japan' has several albums like this one:

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/hovering/fourth-world-japan/

I particular like 清水靖晃 [Yasuaki Shimizu] - Kakashi [案山子] ... not actively but as a concept of how strange and ahead of its time it sounds, I definitely recommend giving that one a curious peek. Also it has a wicked album cover with a cat on it.
