one of these:

Missy Elliott - Work It
Coldplay - Clocks
Clipse - Grindin'
Nelly - Hot in Herre
The Libertines - Time for Heroes

Wilco, pretty handily.

Austin, Thursday, 1 December 2016 02:34 (seven years ago) link

I don't think I've heard this Jürgen Paape track before. Gorgeous.

jmm, Thursday, 1 December 2016 03:18 (seven years ago) link

Heartbeats, in a heartbeat

top 3 tracks don't work too well in 2016 imo

Some absolute corkers here - the top 6 is more or less solid. LOADS of indie landfill dross permeating though. I remember 2002 being a freaking excellent year for new music.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 1 December 2016 10:12 (seven years ago) link

Heartbeats beating out Losing my Edge in this one though

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 1 December 2016 10:13 (seven years ago) link

This isn't nearly as good as '01. Probably Heartbeats.

chap, Thursday, 1 December 2016 10:20 (seven years ago) link

'Heartbeats' another one of those that wouldn't have made any EOY list at the time - first release listed as Dec 27 2002.

nashwan, Thursday, 1 December 2016 10:56 (seven years ago) link

That top two is as good as it gets.

Frederik B, Thursday, 1 December 2016 10:58 (seven years ago) link

Oof. Some real stinkers here. 2001 list infinitely better than this bunch.

Prob Heartbeats or No Children.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 December 2016 10:59 (seven years ago) link

I like in varying degrees all of these:

1 111 LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
2 177 The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
3 257 Johnny Cash - Hurt
4 273 The Knife - Heartbeats
5 333 The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize
8 580 Wilco - Jesus, Etc.
9 586 The Roots feat. Cody Chesnutt - The Seed 2.0
10 596 Missy Elliott - Work It
15 957 The Streets - Weak Become Heroes
16 986 Clipse - Grindin'
17 1129 Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
28 1832 Nelly - Hot in Herre
40 2703 Jürgen Paape - So weit wie noch nie

But I would only rate 5 stars the Jurgen Paape and Missy tracks. The rest I dont think I would care if I ever hear them again. Voting Jurgen.

Work It, Grindin, No Children, Time For Heroes, Hot in herre, Cry me a River

One of those

I know hoes that know Ali Farka Toure (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 December 2016 13:41 (seven years ago) link

but which Interpol song to pick?

flappy bird, Thursday, 1 December 2016 17:52 (seven years ago) link

Thing I never woulda predicted in 2002: the JT songs holding up way better than the Interpol songs.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:04 (seven years ago) link

heh, I didn't even like JT until "Rock Your Body" and I would have said at the time that his songs would hold up better than the Interpol songs (in fact, I probably did; I always hated Interpol)

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:16 (seven years ago) link

Interpol are a sentimental teenage favorite that have endured for me. Paul Banks is one of my favorite lyricists and these three songs have some his best work. it's between PDA and NYC for me.

"I had seven faces / thought I knew which one to wear" is such a great couplet.

flappy bird, Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

1. Rock Your Body
2. Grindin'
3. So weit wie noch nie

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

Never was into Interpol... it seemed to me that artists from previous decades did that sort of thing better and always hated how buried his voice was in the mix. Then again I also don't like Joy Division which seems to be the closest reference critics loved to drop on them. It was always "the new Joy Division" "the new Television"

No longer active (Moka), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

I didn't get the Joy Division comparisons because I never found JD to be enervating

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link

Lol

No longer active (Moka), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link

nobody in that band but Carlos D was into Joy Division though. it's such a drag that they always got tagged as a JD ripoff when Paul just had a similar baritone voice.

The guitar thing they do does mirror Television in some songs only Television is way cooler. The JD comparison is probably in the voice.

I like LCD Soundsystem as much as the next guy but I don't get the sonic appeal of losing my edge

niels, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 07:08 (seven years ago) link

speaking as someone who voted for it, its more about its lyrics/humour than its "sonic appeal"

pumped up kicks and levels on repeat all night (2011nostalgia), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 07:45 (seven years ago) link

I don't mind these results as i like all 4 songs in the top but would have preferred:

Jurgen > Missy > Knife > LCD

I know the namedropping section that begins on the "have you seen my records?" it's meant to be satirical on "Losing my Edge" but those are frankly great artists and would be proud to have them in my collection. Is he trying to make people like me ashamed? It has sort of the opposite effect.

He also forgot to quote "Cardboard Lamb" by Crash Course in Science which seems to be the musical inspiration (bordering on rip-off) behind the song:

https://youtu.be/DdNH1urxXOw

Moka, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 08:42 (seven years ago) link

Guitars also could be a reference (or another rip-off? No idea if James Murphy ever mentioned the influence) to Killing Joke - change, a band he also doesn't mention.

https://youtu.be/t166M5ESVNk

I know it's not the most creative riff but there's also the drum break + guitar thing present on LME and considering the kind of band that LCD is, I don't think any of their music is accidental or coincidential ripping off but carefully chosen hommage.

Moka, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 08:52 (seven years ago) link

The chance of hearing the inferior re-recorded versions of 'So weit wie noch nie' before the original are pretty high on Spotify (which doesn't differentiate between them currently) :(

nashwan, Tuesday, 6 December 2016 11:26 (seven years ago) link

I fell so hard for "All My Friends" in '07 that I sometimes forget how annoying I used to find James Murphy. A relisten confirms: "Losing My Edge," like "Daft Punk Are Playing At My House," is snarky, exclusionary and nowhere near as witty as it thinks it is. Why people hate hipsters, basically.
