i have only just heard anything from this entire album in the past week, so my ears are unbiased by history and fashion.

keep: the 3 singles
burn: everything else

have we never polled you can't hide your love?

^Sort of correct. The other albums are all totally solid, this one's half good - I'd also keep A Million Pleading Faces and would not burn Louise Louise, Mud in Your Eye or Tenderhook.

My favourite is easily I Can't Help Myself though the single version is better because it really does not need the 2 minutes of saxophone at the end.

Hard to say exactly why the album is overall a bit charmless - one reason is because the guitars (and other instrumentation) are very restrained in comparison to their other albums. There's few moments where they let rip with some grinding guitar noise, twinkling background melodies, big bass intros, vocal chanting, tempo pick-ups etc. Those moments are there, especially on the title track but they are few and far between. The other albums are full of them.

Ditto.

Someone today explained the pun regarding "The Artisans", hey!

Mark G, Thursday, 1 December 2016 23:57 (seven years ago) link

Go on then...what's the pun? Artisans = Smiths. Or is it the non-arty early days of OJ?
