tourmate, appeared on her podcast, in the same musical vein with perhaps less Dylan and Joni and more atmosphere, which is either sacrilege to you or not. the track (well, video) with Laura Marling it is unsurprisingly more produced than her debut album last year, which has more of a Marissa Nadler feel.

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

i like here voice and the songwriting, feel like production-wise it feels a little cluttered and overcooked at times, the deleritous effects of the flaming lips that have become so common in indie

wish it were more spare cuz i feel like there's some interesting stuff going on between her vocal melodies and the guitar chords but they get a bit obscured, cool overall tho will listen to more

Her album was a massive grower. Interested to hear what she does next.

one year passes...

has anyone heard I'm Not Your Man? it's a solid album and "Boyfriend" is undeniable, but idk, a lot of the subtlety of her lyrics and arrangements is lost in the transition to anthemic indie rock, and the folkier tracks are a little drab compared to the rich goth-folk of her earlier work. We Slept at Last and the three EP that precede it are some of my favorite music of the decade, though — I love the deep bass and droney undercurrents and the running lyrical theme of self-destruction as a sacrament, which puts her closer in spirit to Comus than to Laura Marling.

I've probably watched this clip of "Let Me In" over a dozen times. such an intense, mesmerizing performance
