I know there's been some discussion about this in another thread, but given it's a "Defend the Indefensible" thread (about his Christmas song which I kinda sorta like), I figured he should have a dedicated one.
So long, Mr. Lake. Though I'm not sure what exactly happened after 1978, for a time you had one of the greatest voices around. Right now I'm playing a loop of "From the Beginning", "Epitaph", "Trilogy", "C'est La Vie", and "Take a Pebble", damn you were smooth

RIP. (The sceptical Prokofiev-quoting Christmas song is amazing too.)

This sucks. Carl Palmer better watch the fuck out.

This was my first exposure to Greg Lake (and Emerson as well, I'd imagine). I was 12.
I still love the hell out of this song.

by the way I'd never seen that video before, it's kind of perfect isn't it?

Visuals match the spirit of the song, absolutely.

I don't think I've listened to an ELP track since my great prog purge of 1979-ish, but I put on "Take A Pebble" this morning. That first album was very important to young me.

Wow, his single with The Shame is a corker, never heard that before.

Frogbs OTM about Lake's voice. I always thought he was underrated as a singer. It's weird to think that Carl Palmer is the only surviving member of ELP now.

Underrated as a bassist too, at least in KC and the early ELP records... best fuzztone of 1970 right here:

giving ELPowell a reslisten, haven't done that since the late 80's. It's...hm.

I'm just re-watching that video on Youtube of ELP rehearsing 'Karn Evil 9' ... I've seen it about a zillion times at this point, but I'm always impressed by just how hard they worked to get that stuff tight.

Beautiful piece. I've been relistening to the first few ELP albums as well as KC's first two after Lake's death. They've reminded me how much I loved listening to them as a kid -- just about every keyb passage and bassline remain inscribed in my memory to the point I could whistle along after not listening to them for many years. Some things are never forgotten.
